The Tennessee Titans’ starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill will not play in the team’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night as he continues to battle through a right high ankle sprain. Titans coach Mike Vrabel wanted to monitor the starting quarterback’s progress throughout the week before coming to a final decision.

Tannehill was injured during the Titans’ Week 6 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. As a result, he wore a cast on his injured foot for a few days before switching over to a walking boot.

Rookie Will Levis will fill in for Tannehill at quarterback on Thursday. In his NFL debut in the 28-23 win over the Atlanta Falcons last week, Levis completed 19 of his 29 pass attempts for 238 yards and four touchdowns.

The Tennessee Titans’ quarterback Ryan Tannehill doesn’t want to spend much time thinking about a 16-15 loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 1. The veteran signal-caller made that clear during a recent chat with reporters.

When asked about his feelings about the Saints’ loss, Tannehill said that he wants to move on from that game and wants to focus on the Week 2 clash against the Los Angeles Chargers.

“Guys, I just want to move on,” Tannehill said. “I’m not going to answer any more questions about what happened Sunday. I’m not happy about it. No one in this building’s happy about it, but at the end of the day, it’s over.”

Tannehill particularly struggled in the season opener, completing only 16 passes out of 34 attempts and throwing for 198 yards. He also had three interceptions and failed to throw a single touchdown pass.

After the game, Tannehill received criticism from his head coach Mike Vrabel, who said that his quarterback “has to be better.”

“We have to hit guys that are open, and we can’t force the ball into double coverage,” Vrabel added.

If Tannehill continues to struggle, the Titans have several options behind him, although neither one seems fit for the team’s playoff aspirations. Second-year signal-caller Malik Willis looked solid in the preseason but didn’t impress while rookie Will Levis will need time to adjust to the NFL.

After a storybook 2019 that saw Ryan Tannehill go from the Titans’ backup quarterback to one of the main reasons that the team advanced to the AFC Championship Game, the 31-year-old quarterback has now earned a big-time contract extension.

Tannehill agreed to a four-year, $118 contract extension with the Titans on Sunday. $62 million of that money, according to reports, is fully guaranteed.

The new deal for Tannehill puts an end to speculation that the Titans would pursue free agent quarterback Tom Brady in free agency, an option that was reportedly considered by the team.

The 31-year-old Texas native signed a one-year deal with the Titans to be the team’s backup quarterback prior to the 2019 season. Tannehill had spent the first six seasons of his career as the Miami Dolphins’ starter after being drafted with the eighth overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Despite originally backing up Marcus Mariota, he won the job after the team’s former starting quarterback was benched during the team’s Week 6 game against the Denver Broncos. He impressed as the team’s quarterback as the starter, passing for 2,742 yards at a 70.3% completion clip.

Tannehill finished the season with 22 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions.

With his new, shiny contract, Tannehill will be looked towards as the Titans’ main building block on the offensive side of the ball as the team looks to continue to contend for Super Bowl titles.

Since taking over from Marcus Mariota as Tennessee Titans’ starting quarterback in Week 7, Ryan Tannehill has played sensationally. He looked like one of the best QBs in the league and managed to lead the Titans to six wins in seven games and get them close to a playoff spot. All of this will now most likely bring him a contract to remain a starter in Tennessee.

It was previously believed that Titans will use a franchise tag on Tannehill to keep him for one more season, before finding a QB of the future. Now, ESPN’s Dianna Russini reports that Tennessee’s front office is discussing how to make a long-term offer to the 31-year-old and keep him as their franchise quarterback.

Titans initially brought in Ryan Tannehill as security for Mariota, who often struggled with injuries in the past few seasons. However, following 2-4 start of the season, Mariota was benched and Tannehill stepped in to try and save Tennessee’s season. And he did just that.

Since being named a starter, Tannehill has been completing over 70 percent of his passes and managed to throw for 1,849 yards and 15 touchdowns. Thanks to this, Titans also emerged as one of the best offenses in NFL, averaging 369.0 total yards of offense and 29.7 points per game.

At the beginning of 2018, quarterback Ryan Tannehill was the starting quarterback of the Miami Dolphins and had the opportunity to show that he was still a franchise player. After another inconsistent season, however, Tannehill was shipped to Tennessee Titans and now awaits the next NFL season as Marcus Mariota’s backup.

“It’s definitely tough at times,” – Tannehill told reporters when asked about the transition. “But Marcus is great to work with. The staff here, Marcus, the quarterback room is really great, and when you work with good people — great people — and you’re all aligned in this thing together trying to win football games, it definitely helps with that transition. But there are some things that are tough about it, but kinds of goes along with it.”

This will be the first time that Ryan Tannehill is a backup in his NFL career. He was drafted eighth overall by the Dolphins in 2012 and immediately got the starting job. When Tannehill didn’t start in the previous seven years, it was mostly due to injuries.

“When you’re the starter, there are certain things that you’re able to do as far as leading and stuff like that,” – he added. “So, really having to kind of take a step back in a leadership role I would say is the toughest role for me. You work at it for so many years, growing leadership and all that, then having to take a step back and really have a back seat is tough, really tough at times.”

During his time with Miami, Tannehill played a total of 88 games while compiling 42-46 record. He completed 62.8 percent of his passes for 20,434 passing yards and 123 touchdowns.
