All-Star first baseman Ryan Howard, who spent his entire MLB career with the Philadelphia Phillies, has announced his retirement from baseball on Tuesday. Howard became a free agent in 2016 and hadn’t played in MLB since. He had, however, a few short stints in the minors with the Atlanta Braves and Colorado Rockies.

The 38-year-old announced his retirement decision via letter, titled “Thank You, Philly,” which was posted on The Players’ Tribune website.

I’m officially announcing my retirement from the game of baseball.” – writes Howard. “It’s almost like I blinked, you know? It’s almost like I blinked — and suddenly, September 2004 … it became September 2018. But I also know that I didn’t blink. I know that it happened. I know that every up, every down, every high, every low … it all happened.”

In his letter, Ryan Howard also remembers some of the most memorable moments of his career and says his thanks to the Phillies organization, his teammates, family, and friends.
Howard made his MLB debut in 2004 and went on to win the National League Rookie of the Year Award in his first year. He continued his professional career in even better fashion by winning NL MVP Award in 2006.

During his 13 years with the Phillies, Ryan Howard made three All-Star appearances while winning Silver Slugger Award and Hank Aaron Award. He also led the league in home runs on two occasions and was an MLB RBI leader three times.

Howard’s MLB statistics include .258 batting average, 382 home runs, and 1,194 RBI.
