Nashville Predators defenseman Ryan Ellis will not enter the 2019 restricted free-agency after all. Although it has seemed that Ellis and Predators can’t agree on a contract extension before the start of the new NHL season, the two sides managed to strike a deal earlier this week.

Ellis signed an eight-year extension, reportedly worth $50 million. The 27-year-old had one year left on his five-year, $12.5 million, contract.

Ryan is a huge part of our team on and off the ice and we are happy to have his leadership remain in our locker room for the foreseeable future,” – said Predators general manager David Poile in a statement. “We have talked about wanting to keep the core of our team together, and this is another opportunity to help us do so while continuing to compete for a Stanley Cup. Ryan is entering his prime and is one of the reasons why we feel this team has a chance to win every time we step on the ice.”

After inking the deal, Ryan Ellis recorded a short video in which he said that he is looking forward to spending the next nine years with the organization.

Ellis might stick around past these nine years since the player recently announced that he would like to finish his career in Nashville.

I love it here,” – he said back in May. “My fiancée loves it here. If it was my wish, I’d finish my career here. So we’ll see what happens.

By signing Ryan Ellis to an extension, Predators get to keep one of the league’s top defenseman who can provide on both ends of the ice. In 352 NHL career games, Ellis scored 46 goals while contributing 95 assists.

Nashville Predators have announced that their defenseman Ryan Ellis will miss the beginning of the upcoming 2017-18 NHL season recovering from a knee surgery he underwent during the offseason. The estimations are that he will be ready by the January 1st. The news was shared on the Predators official Twitter profile.

Commenting on Ellis’ injury, Predators GM David Poile said that “the initial prognosis on this type of a knee injury is four to six months” while adding that “the doctor feels, it’s going to take the full six months for him to recover“.

Ryan Ellis suffered a lower-body injury in the second period of Game 5 in Stanley Cup Final but managed to return for the Game 6 of the series playing 24 minutes and blocking three shots in the process. Nashville Predators were aware that Ellis won’t be ready for the start of the upcoming season, so they traded 2019 third-round draft pick to Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for veteran Alexei Emelin. This was confirmed by Poile: “We don’t expect him back until the end of the year, maybe right around Christmastime. We had a little bit of heads up, and that’s really one of the reasons why we got [Alexei] Emelin from Las Vegas to add to not only our depth but our quality of our defense.

Predators selected Ellis with 11th overall pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Although being listed among the Top 5 defenseman prospects in the draft, many considered his size (5 feet and 9 inches) as a weakness. It wasn’t, especially the last season when he was an important piece of the team’s top four that lead the Predators to their first Stanley Cup Final appearance. In 22 playoff games played in 2016 – 2017 season, Ellis had 5 goals in addition to 8 assists. This ranked him second among defensemen, behind Roman Josi who scored 6 goals. He played 352 NHL games in his career, scoring 46 goals and providing 95 assists.
