The Denver Broncos released veteran quarterback Russell Wilson and paid a hefty price to do it. By cutting Wilson, the Broncos will take an $85 million dead cap hit, which stands as an NFL record.

“Of behalf of the Broncos, we thank Russell for his contributions and dedication to our team and community while wishing him the best as he continues his career,” said Broncos head coach Sean Payton and general manager George Paton in a joint statement.

Being stuck in quarterback purgatory ever since Peyton Manning retired in 2016, the Broncos decided to orchestrate a blockbuster trade for Wilson with the Seattle Seahawks ahead of the 2022 season. The Broncos sent a massive package of assets to Seattle as part of the deal, including two first-round picks, two second-round picks, a fifth-round pick, and three players. They then signed Wilson to a five-year, $245 million extension, one that was yet to kick in before he was cut.

In his first year with the Broncos, Wilson had arguably his worst season since entering the league, completing 60.5% of his passes for 3,524 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He improved in 2023 after Payton took over but still failed to justify the investment Denver made in him. The Broncos even benched Wilson to prevent his salary for 2025 from becoming guaranteed.

The Broncos will now embark on a search for a new quarterback once again and will have limited assets to acquire one. They are dealing with a limited cap to be able to attract top free agent signal callers, while their No. 12 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft isn’t considered high enough to give them a chance to nab one of the top QB prospects.

Wilson, on the other hand, will likely attract attention from teams looking for a bridge quarterback. Despite his struggles in recent years, he showed that he can still be a capable starter and will also come on a cheap deal.

The consensus around the league is that the Denver Broncos will move from veteran quarterback Russell Wilson this offseason. However, it appears that Wilson is still holding on to hope that he will get an opportunity to play for the franchise in 2024.

The Broncos decided to bench Wilson towards the end of the 2023 campaign in order to avoid him getting injured, which would cause his 2025 salary to become guaranteed. This was preceded by a contract dispute between the two sides, with Denver asking Wilson to remove the injury guarantee to continue playing and the player refusing.

Despite everything that happened, it appears that Wilson doesn’t feel any resentment for the Broncos.

“I’ve got more fire than ever, honestly, especially over the past two years and what I’ve gone through,” Wilson said during his appearance on the I Am Athlete podcast. “Whether it’s in Denver or somewhere else, I hope it’s in Denver. I hope I get to finish there. I committed there. I wanted to be there. I want to be there.”

Wilson explained that he hopes he can add to his legacy and win at least a couple more Super Bowls before calling it quits.

“I love the city and everything else, but you also want to be in a place that loves you, too,” he added.

Wilson threw for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in 2023 as the Broncos finished the season 8-9 and missed the playoffs for the eighth consecutive time.

Denver Broncos’ rollercoaster 2023 campaign took another unexpected turn. Head coach Sean Payton announced on Wednesday that veteran quarterback Russell Wilson will be benched for the upcoming game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Wilson’s backup, Jarrett Stidham, will start under center. Stidham only played four snaps this season but hasn’t attempted a single pass.

Speaking about the decision, Payton said that he made the move to bench Wilson because he wanted to get a “spark” on offense.

“I understand all the speculation and everything that surrounds a move like that,” Payton said. “I can tell you — look, we’re desperately trying to win.”

Despite what Payton was saying, many took Wilson’s benching as a sign that his time with the franchise might be over. According to multiple reports, the former Pro Bowler would get another $37 million in guaranteed money on his already massive deal if he can’t pass his physical in March. Considering they are already in a tough salary cap situation, the Broncos desperately want to avoid that.

Wilson has yet to start the five-year, $242.6 million extension he signed with the Broncos in 2022. If Denver opts to release him, they would have to swallow up a total of $85 million in dead cap space in the next two seasons. As daunting as this sounds, it appears that Payton and the Broncos’ front office are thinking about that.

Wilson is playing better in 2023 compared to last season but is still far from his best days. The 35-year-old player has thrown for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

Quarterback Russell Wilson will not play for the Denver Broncos in Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals despite clearing concussion protocol, Broncos coach  Nathaniel Hackett confirmed. The team decided that it was in the player’s best interest for him to sit out one game rather than being rushed back into action.

While inactive for Sunday’s game, Wilson is expected to start on Christmas Day against the Los Angeles Rams according to Hackett. Backup quarterback Brett Rypien will start against the Cardinals in Wilson’s stead.

“As an organization, we decided to give [Wilson] another week to get ready so he’s ready to go for the Los Angeles Rams,” Hackett confirmed following Friday’s practice session. “We informed him of the decision. He’s not happy with it. He wants to be out there and play. … But we as an organization, after talking and discussing for this entire week, have decided it’s best for our organization, best for Russell. And we talked about this all the way from top all the way to the bottom.”

Wilson’s head hit the ground during the fourth quarter of the 34-28 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last Sunday. After staying on the ground for a few moments, Wilson was helped to his feet by the Broncos’ medical staff.

The Denver Broncos finally have their franchise quarterback, and it isn’t reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers. Instead, the Broncos made a deal with the Seattle Seahawks and will have Pro Bowler Russell Wilson under center in 2022 and beyond.

The trade can’t be official before the start of the new league year, but the terms of the deal are already out there. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the trade package that the Seahawks received includes third-year QB Drew Lock, former first-round tight end Noah Fant, and defensive lineman Shelby Harris. Seattle is also getting two first-round picks, two second-round selections, and a fifth-rounder. As a part of the agreement, the Broncos will get Seattle’s fourth-round pick in 2022.

In order to facilitate the deal, Wilson waved his no-trade clause. The 33-year-old is already in Denver, where he passed his physical.

Many believed that the Broncos were zeroed in on Rodgers as their preferred target, but sources around the league say that Denver never actually made an offer to the Green Bay Packers. Instead, they engaged in Wilson trade talks with the Seahawks several weeks ago and managed to hammer out a deal in recent days.

The Broncos’ motivation is clear. They have a talented young roster, for which many believe is only a QB away from being a Super Bowl contender. In Russell Wilson, they get a star who can maximize their potential while ending their exhausting search for a franchise quarterback that started when Peyton Manning retired.

The Seahawks, on the other hand, hit the reset button after realizing that they probably reached their ceiling with the current roster. They also speed up the inevitable divorce with Wilson, considering that the veteran already had issues with the organization and signaled he wanted out.

Wilson made 158 starts for Seattle since the franchise drafted him in the third round of the 2012 NFL draft. He has 104 wins, most by a QB in the history through his first 10 seasons in the league, and has helped the Seahawks win Super Bowl XLVIII. His individual accolades include nine Pro Bowl nods and one All-Pro selection.

It appears that Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson won’t be on the move this offseason after all. Addressing rumors about Wilson’s future with the franchise at the NFL scouting combine on Wednesday, the team’s head coach Pete Carroll told reporters that the Seahawks “have no intention” to trade their star signal-caller.

According to Carroll, the rival NFL teams did reach out to test Wilson’s availability in recent weeks, but the Seahawks showed no interest in progressing those talks.

“We have no intention of making any move there, but the conversations, [general manager John Schneider] has to field those. He always has. But nothing specific to that,” Carroll explained.

The relationship between the Seahawks and Russell Wilson has been strained ever since the 33-year-old publicly expressed his frustrations about the lack of protection and Carroll’s offense after the 2020 NFL season. Wilson later reportedly handed Seattle a list of teams he would waive his no-trade clause for, while the franchise held exploratory talks with several teams.

By the time the 2021 season kicked off, the two sides temporarily set aside their differences to focus on the new campaign. However, it turned out to be one of the most challenging in Wilson’s pro career, as he struggled with form and missed three games due to an injury. As a result, the Seahawks finished with a 7-10 record, marking the first time they finished under .500 in a decade.

While Wilson and the Seahawks still haven’t settled their differences, the trade doesn’t seem highly likely at the moment. Unless Seattle intends to enter a rebuild, having Wilson under center still gives them the best chance to be a contender in 2022 and beyond.

The Seattle Seahawks initially projected that their star quarterback Russell Wilson would be forced to miss between six and eight weeks after undergoing finger surgery. But Wilson had plans to beat that timetable from the get-go, and it seems he has managed to do it.

After being on the sidelines for just four weeks, Wilson returned to practice this week and is expected to play in the Week 10 matchup against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. According to the eight-time Pro Bowler, he is still “not 100 percent yet” but feels “pretty dang close.”

“I’ve been blessed to be able to play all the games I’ve been able to play and all the things I’ve been able to do so far in this league,” Wilson told reporters on Thursday. “I feel like it’s a new beginning, it’s a new start, and I feel like it’s time to get going again all over again.”

The Seahawks will be more than happy to welcome Russell Wilson sooner than expected, considering they are finding themselves in danger of missing out on the playoffs for the first time since 2017. They are currently sitting at a 3-5 record and don’t have much room for error if they want to salvage their season.

Wilson hurt his finger during the 26-17 loss to the LA Rams in Week 5 after banging his head on defensive end Aaron Donald’s helmet. The 32-year-old had a stellar campaign until then, completing career-high 72.0 percent of his passes while throwing for 1,196 yards and 10 touchdowns with only one interception.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson will reportedly miss 4-8 weeks of action after undergoing surgery on his finger. The 32-year-old star suffered a ruptured tendon in the middle finger of his right hand during his team’s 26-17 defeat to the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night.

Wilson underwent surgery on Friday morning and is expected to begin physical therapy over the course of the weekend. The Seahawks remain confident that Wilson will return to action later this season.

The decision to undergo surgery was made with Wilson’s long-term health in mind. Before becoming sidelined for the Seahawks’ next fixture against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Wilson had a streak of 149 consecutive appearances in the starting lineup. This streak is longer than that of any active quarterback. Only Peyton Manning has made more consecutive appearances with a figure of 208.

Despite the initial time estimate for Wilson’s absence from the team, coach Pete Carroll remains unsure of how long the player will actually be sidelined. He explained on Friday morning during his weekly radio show that until Wilson met with a hand specialist, the exact timeline for his recovery would remain uncertain.

Ties are a rare occurrence in the NFL, but when they do happen, they serve as a disappointment for everyone. Both teams believe they missed a chance to get a valuable win, while the fans feel they don’t have a reason to celebrate. This is why the Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson believes the league should eliminate ties altogether. And he’s even ready to help.

Wilson recently made a guest appearance on Peyton Manning and Eli Manning’s ManningCast, during which he witnessed overtime in the game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Las Vegas Raiders. Watching it unfold, the Pro Bowl signal-caller outlined an intriguing solution that would make ties a thing of history.

“You go 15 minutes, an extra quarter, or however long that extra overtime is, and then if nobody scores, we all end in a tie and go home? How terrible is that?!”, Wilson told the Manning brothers.

According to Wilson, if the game is still tied after overtime, the teams should have a coin toss. The team that wins the toss then chooses whether to kick a long field goal or have another team make the FG attempt. If the kicking team makes the field goal, they take the win. If they miss, the other team ends on the winning end of the game.

“So now you get to choose, for one kick—are we going to kick it, or are they going to kick It? You have to kick it from the 35, or maybe the 40,” he explained.

The NFL is currently the only league among the four major leagues in the United States, the other three being NBA, MLB, and NHL, that has ties. The most recent tie took place early in the 2020 NFL season when the Cincinnati Bengals and the Philadelphia Eagles finished their Week 3 matchup 23-23 after overtime.

After three fairly successful seasons, the Seattle Seahawks have decided to move on from offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.

The team stated that the decision was made as a result of philosophical differences between Schottenheimer and the rest of the coaching staff.

Schottenheimer comes from a famed family of football coaches. His father Marty was the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs and San Diego Chargers while his uncle Kurt was a defensive and special teams coach in the league for many years.

Before taking the job in Seattle, Schottenheimer was the quarterback’s coach in Indianapolis, Washington, and San Diego. He also had stints as an offensive coordinator with the New York Jets and St. Louis Rams.

The move comes as a bit of a surprise for a few reasons. One is that head coach Pete Carroll said on Monday that Schottenheimer would be coming back next year, adding that the plan would be to run the ball better and more in 2021.

It’s also unexpected because their overall offense put up historic numbers this year, setting a new franchise record for points scored in the regular season with 459.

QB Russell Wilson threw for 4,212 yards and 40 touchdowns this season in Schottenheimer’s offense.
