The consensus around the league is that the Denver Broncos will move from veteran quarterback Russell Wilson this offseason. However, it appears that Wilson is still holding on to hope that he will get an opportunity to play for the franchise in 2024.

The Broncos decided to bench Wilson towards the end of the 2023 campaign in order to avoid him getting injured, which would cause his 2025 salary to become guaranteed. This was preceded by a contract dispute between the two sides, with Denver asking Wilson to remove the injury guarantee to continue playing and the player refusing.

Despite everything that happened, it appears that Wilson doesn’t feel any resentment for the Broncos.

“I’ve got more fire than ever, honestly, especially over the past two years and what I’ve gone through,” Wilson said during his appearance on the I Am Athlete podcast. “Whether it’s in Denver or somewhere else, I hope it’s in Denver. I hope I get to finish there. I committed there. I wanted to be there. I want to be there.”

Wilson explained that he hopes he can add to his legacy and win at least a couple more Super Bowls before calling it quits.

“I love the city and everything else, but you also want to be in a place that loves you, too,” he added.

Wilson threw for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in 2023 as the Broncos finished the season 8-9 and missed the playoffs for the eighth consecutive time.

Denver Broncos’ rollercoaster 2023 campaign took another unexpected turn. Head coach Sean Payton announced on Wednesday that veteran quarterback Russell Wilson will be benched for the upcoming game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Wilson’s backup, Jarrett Stidham, will start under center. Stidham only played four snaps this season but hasn’t attempted a single pass.

Speaking about the decision, Payton said that he made the move to bench Wilson because he wanted to get a “spark” on offense.

“I understand all the speculation and everything that surrounds a move like that,” Payton said. “I can tell you — look, we’re desperately trying to win.”

Despite what Payton was saying, many took Wilson’s benching as a sign that his time with the franchise might be over. According to multiple reports, the former Pro Bowler would get another $37 million in guaranteed money on his already massive deal if he can’t pass his physical in March. Considering they are already in a tough salary cap situation, the Broncos desperately want to avoid that.

Wilson has yet to start the five-year, $242.6 million extension he signed with the Broncos in 2022. If Denver opts to release him, they would have to swallow up a total of $85 million in dead cap space in the next two seasons. As daunting as this sounds, it appears that Payton and the Broncos’ front office are thinking about that.

Wilson is playing better in 2023 compared to last season but is still far from his best days. The 35-year-old player has thrown for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

The Denver Broncos finally have their franchise quarterback, and it isn’t reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers. Instead, the Broncos made a deal with the Seattle Seahawks and will have Pro Bowler Russell Wilson under center in 2022 and beyond.

The trade can’t be official before the start of the new league year, but the terms of the deal are already out there. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the trade package that the Seahawks received includes third-year QB Drew Lock, former first-round tight end Noah Fant, and defensive lineman Shelby Harris. Seattle is also getting two first-round picks, two second-round selections, and a fifth-rounder. As a part of the agreement, the Broncos will get Seattle’s fourth-round pick in 2022.

In order to facilitate the deal, Wilson waved his no-trade clause. The 33-year-old is already in Denver, where he passed his physical.

Many believed that the Broncos were zeroed in on Rodgers as their preferred target, but sources around the league say that Denver never actually made an offer to the Green Bay Packers. Instead, they engaged in Wilson trade talks with the Seahawks several weeks ago and managed to hammer out a deal in recent days.

The Broncos’ motivation is clear. They have a talented young roster, for which many believe is only a QB away from being a Super Bowl contender. In Russell Wilson, they get a star who can maximize their potential while ending their exhausting search for a franchise quarterback that started when Peyton Manning retired.

The Seahawks, on the other hand, hit the reset button after realizing that they probably reached their ceiling with the current roster. They also speed up the inevitable divorce with Wilson, considering that the veteran already had issues with the organization and signaled he wanted out.

Wilson made 158 starts for Seattle since the franchise drafted him in the third round of the 2012 NFL draft. He has 104 wins, most by a QB in the history through his first 10 seasons in the league, and has helped the Seahawks win Super Bowl XLVIII. His individual accolades include nine Pro Bowl nods and one All-Pro selection.

The Seattle Seahawks initially projected that their star quarterback Russell Wilson would be forced to miss between six and eight weeks after undergoing finger surgery. But Wilson had plans to beat that timetable from the get-go, and it seems he has managed to do it.

After being on the sidelines for just four weeks, Wilson returned to practice this week and is expected to play in the Week 10 matchup against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. According to the eight-time Pro Bowler, he is still “not 100 percent yet” but feels “pretty dang close.”

“I’ve been blessed to be able to play all the games I’ve been able to play and all the things I’ve been able to do so far in this league,” Wilson told reporters on Thursday. “I feel like it’s a new beginning, it’s a new start, and I feel like it’s time to get going again all over again.”

The Seahawks will be more than happy to welcome Russell Wilson sooner than expected, considering they are finding themselves in danger of missing out on the playoffs for the first time since 2017. They are currently sitting at a 3-5 record and don’t have much room for error if they want to salvage their season.

Wilson hurt his finger during the 26-17 loss to the LA Rams in Week 5 after banging his head on defensive end Aaron Donald’s helmet. The 32-year-old had a stellar campaign until then, completing career-high 72.0 percent of his passes while throwing for 1,196 yards and 10 touchdowns with only one interception.

You rarely hear New England Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick praise his own players, let alone the ones playing for the opposing team. However, Belichick recently decided to make an exception for Seattle Seahawks’ quarterback Russell Wilson.

Speaking with the media ahead of the Pats’ Week 2 meeting against Seattle, Belichick openly raved about Wilson, labeling him as underrated and “tremendous player.”

“Honestly, I think he’s in a way underrated by the media or the fans, I don’t know. But I don’t really see anybody better than this player,” said Belichick. “This guy is a tremendous player.”

According to Belichick, he is especially impressed by Wilson’s versatility.

“He can do everything,” he added. “He’s got obviously great leadership, playmaking skills. He plays very well in the most critical situations in the game. His decision-making, running, passing.”

Belichick faced Russell Wilson four times in the past, recording two wins and two losses in those games. One of those wins came in Super Bowl XLIX when the Pats defeated Seattle thanks to Wilson’s interception.

But New England probably doesn’t expect Wilson to make similar mistakes, considering he now has a future Hall of Famer resume. The 31-year-old signal-caller was especially on a tear in the past three seasons, having thrown 30+ touchdowns in each one. No other QB managed to do this in the same period.

Wilson also had a great start of 2020 NFL season, leading Seattle to Week 1 win against Atlanta Falcons with 322 passing yards and four touchdowns.

Seattle Seahawks have given their quarterback Russell Wilson a record four-year, $140 million extension during the season, and it seems to be a great decision so far. Wilson has led the Seahawks to three wins in the first four games of 2019 while putting on some excellent performances during that stretch.

Wilson is currently completing a career-high 72.9 percent of his passes, while throwing for 1,141 and eight touchdowns. He is also only one of four QBs who haven’t threw an interception this season.

This all caused Seattle’s head coach Pete Carroll to treat his QB with some well-deserved praise on Thursday. According to Carroll, Wilson is currently playing the best football of his career.

“Russell is off to a really good start,” – said Carroll. “He’s playing great football, it’s the best he’s ever been.”

Asked to comment on this, Wilson agreed he has been good lately, but still thinks he can do better.

“I think I’m playing good,” – Wilson shared. “I think there’s some more things out there you can always try to do. I wish I could’ve found a way to win the game, the game we lost against the Saints. I wish I had that one back, somehow.”

Russell Wilson will have the opportunity to make up for the loss against Saints on Thursday when Seahawks meet Los Angeles Rams. The Rams have been a nightmare matchup for Seattle in recent years, beating them six out of eight times and handing them three defeats. If Wilson manages to dice through Rams defense, then there will be no doubt that he is the best or close to best he ever was.
