Oklahoma City Thunder has finalized the job of parting ways with the All-Star part of their roster this offseason. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Thunder traded 2017 NBA MVP Russell Westbrook to Houston Rockets in exchange for guard Chris Paul.

Wojnarowski reports that the deal also includes Rockets sending two first-round picks in 2024 and 2026, both protected from No.1 to No.4, as part of the deal. OKC will also have the opportunity to swap picks with Houston in 2021 and 2025.

Thunder isn’t expected to keep Paul on their roster, and will probably re-direct him to another team before the trade deadline concludes.

Although the teams haven’t officially announced the trade, Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta confirmed to Houston’s Fox 26 that Westbrook is coming to town.

“We’re excited to have Russell Westbrook,” – said Fertitta. “I would watch him play for Oklahoma City, and he’s so athletic. At the same time, this franchise just had the two years with the most wins it’s ever had in consecutive years, and we wouldn’t have accomplished that without Chris Paul. Chris Paul is unbelievable, and he’s gonna be sadly missed.”

Ever since Thunder traded All-NBA forward Paul George to the Los Angeles Clippers for a monster haul of picks, Westbrook and Thunder’ general manager Sam Presti worked together in order to figure out their next step. Both sides ended up “welcoming” the idea that Westbrook gets traded and Presti was willing to hear out the player’s wishes about his next destination as a way to thank him for his contribution to the franchise.

Although Thunder would certainly be able to get a better package from some other team, Presti orchestrated the trade with Houston Rockets which will reunite Russell Westbrook with his former teammate James Harden. Both Westbrook and Harden discussed the possibility of playing together in the past few days and were enthusiastic about teaming up.

The Oklahoma City Thunder were cornered into making a franchise-altering decision when 2019 NBA MVP finalist Paul George asked them to trade him to the Los Angeles Clippers to join up with Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard.

Now that George is heading out the door and Russell Westbrook is the only star left on a weakening OKC roster, it seems as if he could become the next player to bid adieu to the Thunder.

Multiple sources reported on the possibility of a Westbrook deal that would bring the point guard’s 11-year tenure with the Western Conference franchise to an end.

Westbrook has developed into one of the NBA’s best players since breaking into the league in 2008. During his time in OKC, he accumulated one of the most impressive resumes in the NBA over the past decade.

Westbrook was named NBA MVP in 2017, has been named twice to the NBA All-Pro first team, and six times to the second-team squad. He is an elite point guard who has shown little signs of slowing down at the age of 30.

It remains unclear which teams could potentially acquire Westbrook, but one team that immediately emerged as a potential destination has been the Miami Heat. The Southeast Conference team acquired Jimmy Butler earlier this offseason and could be looking for a superstar to pair with him.

For now, NBA fans must watch and wait to see what will become of Westbrook’s future in the league.

Although Oklahoma City Thunder didn’t make it past the first round of the Western Conference playoffs, it looks like the team’s star players ended the season pretty banged up. According to ESPN, both of OKC’s All-Stars, Paul George and Russell Westbrook, have undergone surgeries in recent days.

George had a procedure on his right shoulder in order to repair a partially torn tendon, while also being scheduled for a smaller-scale procedure on his left shoulder. The 29-year-old will reportedly miss out the Thunder’s preseason training camp while recovering but might be ready for the start of the season.

Westbrook, on the other hand, also had surgery on his left hand to repair a torn ligament in one of the fingers while also undergoing a minor procedure on his right knee. He is, however, expected to return in time for the training camp.

Paul George had an MVP-worthy campaign in the first half of the season but started to struggle after injuring his shoulder in a game against Denver Nuggets on February 21st. After missing three games, George returned to the court but then injured his left shoulder. The injuries caused his production to slip down which greatly affected the Thunder’s overall performance and caused them to slip from the third seed to sixth seed in the West.

George ended the regular season averaging 28.0 points, 8.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.2 steals per game.

Russell Westbrook, on the other hand, reportedly played with injury on his non-shooting hand for final six weeks of the regular season and through the first round. Westbrook ended up averaging a triple-double for a third consecutive NBA season with 22.9 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 10.7 assists per game.

In yet another unprecedented performance, Russell Westbrook overwhelmed the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night with a performance for the history books.

Westbrook posted the second 20 point, 20 assist, 20 rebound game in the history of the NBA in a 119-103 home win over the Lakers.

The win pushes Oklahoma City to 45-33, pushing them into a tie with the San Antonio Spurs for 7th place in the Western Conference. Four games remain for the playoffs, and the Thunder could theoretically finish as high as 5th in the tight conference.

Without a doubt, the star of the show on Tuesday with Westbrook. The only other player in the history of the NBA to equal his 20-20-20 single-game output was legendary center Wilt Chamberlain, who accomplished the feat back in 1968.

Westbrook dedicated his game to rapper Nipsey Hussle, a fellow Los Angeles native that was killed in a drive-by shooting last Sunday.

Westbrook is now averaging a staggering 23.5 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 10.5 assists per game.

He and the Thunder will be back in action on Friday night at home against the Detroit Pistons.

Russell Westbrook extended his NBA record with his 11th consecutive game with a triple-double on Thursday night in a loss to the New Orleans Pelicans.

Despite losing 131-122 to the Pelicans at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Westbrook recorded double-digit figures in points, assists, and rebounds for the eleventh consecutive time, becoming the first NBA player in history to record this feat.

Westbrook played 39 minutes in Thursday’s game and finished with 44 points, 11 assists, and 14 rebounds. Despite his magisterial performance, the Thunder lost to move to 37-20 on the season.

He now must wait until after the NBA All Star break to continue his run. The league will be on a break for All Star Weekend from Friday until next Thursday.

The Thunder will return to action next Friday, February 23rd, against the Utah Jazz at home.

Westbrook will start on the bench in Sunday’s All-Star Game in Charlotte, North Carolina for Team Giannis after he was selected 16th overall in the All Star Game draft.

The 30-year-old guard is averaging 21.7 points, 11.2 assists, and 11.2 rebounds in his 11th NBA season this year.

Russell Westbrook, one of the most dynamic and special players in basketball, made history on Monday night after recording a triple-double in his tenth consecutive game.

Westbrook notched 21 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists in the Thunder’s 120-111 win against the Portland Trail Blazers. This was the first time any player in the history of the league had strung together double digit games recording double digits in three statistical categories.

The Thunder superstar equaled the old mark of 9 set by Wilt Chamberlain back in 1968 against the Rockets on Sunday. He wouldn’t be denied in his quest for ten straight.

Not only does Westbrook have a ten-game streak with a triple-double intact, he is also averaging a triple-double per game on the season.

Westbrook is averaging 21.2 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 11.2 assists per game. He is one of the team’s leaders that have propelled Oklahoma City to their current 37-19 record, good for 3rd place in the Western Conference.

Westbrook and Oscar Robertson are the only two players to average a triple-double during an entire NBA season. If Westbrook repeats his feat again this year, after doing so once in 2016-17, he’d be the only player to do it multiple times in a career.

Westbrook will look to make it 11 games in a row when the Thunder travel to New Orleans to face the Pelicans on Thursday.

Oklahoma City Thunder’s point guard and reigning NBA MVP Russell Westbrook has done it again! The 29-year-old entered the Wednesday’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies 16 rebounds shy of averaging another triple-double in the season, and he got them in just 22 minutes on the court. With this feat, Westbrook became the first player in the NBA history to average a triple-double in two consecutive seasons. He finished the 2017-18 season averaging 25.4 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 10.2 assists.

In the Thunder’s final two games, against the Miami Heat and the Grizzlies, Westbrook needed to get 34 rebounds in order to average another triple-double through the season. After he grabbed 18 boards in the win against the Heat, there was no doubt that he will get what he needs in the last game of the 2017-18 regular season. Interesting thing was that Westbrook didn’t have a triple-double in the game against the Grizzlies since he ended up with 20 rebounds, 19 assists, and only 6 points.

I’m very, very thankful and blessed to go out and compete,” – said Westbrook after the game. “Like I’ve said many, many times, I don’t take this game for granted, I don’t take going on the floor competing for granted, and God got something planned for me, man, nobody can stop it, and I always continue to follow his faith and stay faithful and stay strong and continue to do what I’m doing.

In the 2016-17 season, during his MVP campaign, Russell Westbrook became only the second player in the history of the NBA to average a triple-double after Oscar Robertson did it in 1961–62 (30.8 points, 12.5 rebounds and 11.4 assists). Russell Westbrook also broke Robertson’s record for most triple-doubles in a season (41) by getting 42 of them.

Oklahoma City Thunder’s Russell Westbrook is continuing to show why he is one of the best players in today’s NBA. With a triple-double in Tuesday’s 119-107 win against the Atlanta Hawks, Westbrook became just the fourth player in the history of NBA to reach 100 career triple-doubles. In the game against the Hawks, Westbrook had 32 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists.

Now the 29-year-old is in the company of NBA legends Oscar Robinson (181 career triple-doubles), Magic Johnson (138 career triple-doubles) and Jason Kidd (107 career triple-doubles). Westbrook reached the mark playing in 736 NBA games, which makes him the third fastest to do so. Robinson needed only 277 games to reach 100 triple-doubles, while Johnson got his in 656th game.

Oh man, just an unbelievable blessing,” – said Westbrook on Tuesday night. ‘‘I give thanks to the man above just for allowing me to go out and play the game I love each and every night. I never take it for granted. The group of guys that’s ahead are Hall of Famers,” Westbrook said. ”I’m just happy to be a part of the crew with those guys.

This achievement of Russell Westbrook is even bigger when put in a proper perspective. For example, Westbrook has more triple-doubles than 23 NBA franchises have in their entire history. Also, he managed to post a triple-double against all 29 other teams, something that no player managed to do. Finally, his triple-doubles aren’t just stat stuffing as some would argue, but also translate to wins. Thunder have an 82-18 record when Westbrook has a triple-double.

Just to be in the presence of that, of him, to do what he does on a nightly basis, night in and night out,” – said his teammate Carmelo Anthony. “The focus you have to have, the intensity level you have to play with. For me to be able to be a part of that, to be alongside him, like I said, it’s a special moment. I think it’s something that we should all appreciate, moments like this and appreciate what we have and who we have, especially in a moment like we are in right now.

While other players are looking to test free agency, see where they want to be in a year or two, not make long-term decisions, one man knows where he belongs. NBA’s most explosive point guard and reigning MVP Russell Westbrook  has finally signed a 5 year, $205 million extension which was sitting on his table for a long time now. This killed all the report about Westbrook’s intentions to skip OKC and head to LA. Westbrook previously said that he was simply busy during the summer, but that he knows where he want’s to be. By putting his signature on the deal, he transformed his words into actions.

Oklahoma City Thunder also released an official statement about Westbrook’s commitment.
Russell represents everything we could have ever hoped for when building a basketball team for Oklahoma City, said Thunder Chairman Clayton I. Bennett. “His character, integrity and relentless drive have been a great unifier that has deeply and positively affected the spirit of our fans inside our arena, in our classrooms and in our neighborhoods. We recognize and deeply appreciate Russell’s rare and unique abilities as he leads the Oklahoma City Thunder, but also understand his presence and impact on our community will be felt for decades to come. On behalf of the entire Thunder organization, our ownership group and all of Oklahoma, I want to express my deepest appreciation to Russell and I know that the very best days for the Thunder are yet to come.

Russell’s commitment to the Thunder organization since its inception in 2008 has helped propel us to great heights and stare down great challenges over our first decade,” added OKC’s GM Sam Presti. “We are extremely fortunate to have an athlete, competitor and person such as Russell wear the Thunder uniform. To have him cement his legacy as a leader as we enter into our 10th season in Oklahoma City is extraordinary. I am extremely grateful to Russell, his family and to our ownership for the commitment and support that they have demonstrated in supporting our vision for the Thunder.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, there is no place I would rather be than Oklahoma City,” said Westbrook in the statement. “I am so honored to have the opportunity to continue my career here with the Thunder. From day one the support that Mr. Bennett, Sam, Troy and the entire organization have given me and my family has been incredible, and we are so grateful. When you play in Oklahoma City you play in front of the best fans in the world, I’m looking forward to bringing everything I’ve got, for them, this city and for this organization. WHY NOT?

After getting this out of their way, OKC can now focus on just one thing; getting that NBA title. With Russ staying for at least 5 more years now, Thunder have set the foundation for great things. Their key piece is secured, and that makes it all easier to woe Paul George and Carmelo Anthony with the idea of staying in Oklahoma City.
