The Los Angeles Clippers confirmed that their point guard Russell Westbrook suffered a hand fracture in Friday night’s 140-115 win over the Washington Wizards.

Westbrook injured his hand while trying to pick off Wizards’ Jordan Poole in the first half. He exited the game shortly after and didn’t return. According to The Athletic’s Law Murray, Westbrook is expected to miss several weeks and possibly won’t play again until April.

“(I) just feel bad for Russ right now,” Clippers’ coach Tyronn Lue told reporters during the post-game conference. “You never want to see a player get hurt. Jordan Poole drove around, and he tried to deflect from the back. I think he hit his elbow with his hand. We don’t know what timetable, don’t know if he needs surgery or anything yet, but he’s out right now. So just trying to figure it out.”

Entering the Wizards’ game, Westbrook was the only Clipper to play in every game in the 2023-24 season. The former NBA MVP established himself as a key contributor from the bench, averaging 11.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists while also playing some of the best defense in his career.

The Clippers will definitely miss Westbrook and his energy as they try to stay in the race for the No.1 seed in the Western Conference. The LA team is currently sitting fourth in the standings with 3.0 games behind the leading Minnesota Timberwolves.

Houston Rockets’ NBA title hopes received a tough blow on Thursday. According to ESPN, Rockets’ All-Star guard Russell Westbrook is dealing with quad muscle strain and is set to miss the start of the playoffs.

Reportedly, Westbrook’s availability for the playoffs will depend on how well he responds to the treatment, but he’ll miss at least the “first few games.” Rockets will begin their postseason next week when they face Westbrook’s former team Oklahoma City Thunder.

Westbrook last played on Tuesday against San Antonio Spurs after missing Houston’s previous two games due to quad contusion. On Wednesday, however, he felt soreness in his right quad and underwent an MRI which ended up showing the strain.

Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni said after Wednesday’s loss to Indiana Pacers that the team will have more clarity on the injury next week.

“We’ll see how he responds,” said D’Antoni. “We’ll just see next week.”

Russell Westbrook arrived to Houston last summer in a blockbuster trade that saw Chris Paul and par of picks head to Oklahoma City. Westbrook has been enjoying the productive season with Rockets so far, averaging 27.2 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 7.0 assists per game while enjoying career-best field goal percentage (47.2%).

After starting the season with 0-4 record, Oklahoma City Thunder finally managed to find their rhythm and notch five straight wins after that. Unfortunately, they might lose it again, since their All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook suffered an ankle sprain in the third quarter of OKC’s 122-116 win over New Orleans Pelicans on Monday night and had to leave the game early.

Westbrook was trying to get an offensive rebound next to Pelicans’ forward Anthony Davis and ended up landing on Davis’ foot and rolling his ankle.

Thunder said that they still don’t know how severe Westbrook’s injury is, but the team did reveal that X-rays on the 29-year-old’s left ankle came back negative.

Russ has a pretty high pain tolerance, so I knew it was something that was serious,” – said his teammate Paul George after the game. “I was just hoping it wasn’t his knee. I thought I saw him holding his knee. I think we can all say it’s unfortunate, we can all say as bad as it was, we’re happy it wasn’t the knee and that it was just an ankle sprain.

If Russell Westbrook’s injury turns out to be grade 1 sprain, he is likely to be out for a few weeks until he fully recovers. If it’s grade 2 sprain, then he is looking towards a month of downtime. Westbrook already missed the first two games of the season, after having knee surgery in the offseason.

Westbrook is averaging 25.3 points, 8.5 rebounds and 8.8 assists per game so far in the season.

Oklahoma City Thunder’s star point guard Russell Westbrook underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Wednesday according to ESPN‘s Royce Young. While the procedure is nothing that OKC fans should worry about, the 29-year-old will miss the preseason and might not be ready for the start of the season.

Westbrook reportedly experienced “stiffness” in his right knee during the past few weeks and decided to have a procedure a pre-emptive measure.

This is the same knee Russell Westbrook suffered a meniscus tear in after a collision with Patrick Beverley in 2013 playoff series against the Houston Rockets. Following the injury, Westbrook went to have three surgeries in the following nine months but hasn’t had troubles since then. He even bounced back to win an NBA MVP award for the 2016-17 season and average a triple-double in the past two seasons.

Oklahoma City Thunder will re-evaluate Russell Westbrook after four weeks, just in time for their season opener on October 16 against the Golden State Warriors. If Westbrook gets cleared to play by the medical staff, he will be featured in the starting line-up, but OKC will not rush to get him back to the court at all means. While Westbrook is going to miss this extended period of time, the overall feeling around the organization is not alarming, and everyone expects him to get back to his usual self in November.

While Thunder had another disappointing season last year, Russell Westbrook still managed to put MVP-worthy numbers. He averaged 25.4 points, 10.2 assists, 10.1 rebounds, and 1.8 steals while being named an All-Star and earning All-NBA Second Team honors.
