Oklahoma City Thunder’s point guard Russell Westbrook did not only help his team make a historic comeback in 114-112 win over the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday night but also continued to make his case for being one of the all-time greats.

Westbrook finished the Nets’ game with 21 points, 17 assists and 15 rebounds, getting his 108th career triple-double and surpassing Hall of Famer Jason Kidd on the All-Time triple-double list. The 30-year-old, who won the NBA MVP award in 2017, is now on the third place on the list, behind Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson, who has 138, and Oscar Robertson, who holds the record with 181 TDs.

My job is to see the game, read the game [and] the game will tell you what you need to do,” – said Westbrook after achieving this feat. “As a point guard, my job is to facilitate and have control of the game, and that’s what I tried to do.

Although Westbrook was happy about his individual achievement, he was even more pleased with the effort his team put in to beat Brooklyn Nets.

OKC Thunder entered the game against the Nets as one of the hottest teams in the Western Conference, but things didn’t look all that great for them midway through the third quarter. The Thunder found themselves 23 points behind at one moment and entered the fourth quarter trailing by 18.

Then, Paul George stepped up, orchestrating a comeback with a huge performance in which he scored a personal record of 25 points in one quarter including a game-winning three-pointer with 3.1 seconds left in the game. This was most by any Thunder player since the team moved from Seattle in 2008, while the 23 points comeback was the biggest deficit OKC managed to overcome in franchise history.

“My job is to make sure that I constantly keep telling him to stay aggressive, to play his game, because he’s that type of guy, man,” – said Westbrook about George’s performance. “He can get hot. He’s a superstar in this league; and as you seen tonight, when he gets hot, he can change the game for us.

After starting the season 0-4, Oklahoma City Thunder now finds themselves second in the Western Conference with a record of 16-7 and a real chance to make some noise in the playoffs.

After starting the season with 0-4 record, Oklahoma City Thunder finally managed to find their rhythm and notch five straight wins after that. Unfortunately, they might lose it again, since their All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook suffered an ankle sprain in the third quarter of OKC’s 122-116 win over New Orleans Pelicans on Monday night and had to leave the game early.

Westbrook was trying to get an offensive rebound next to Pelicans’ forward Anthony Davis and ended up landing on Davis’ foot and rolling his ankle.

Thunder said that they still don’t know how severe Westbrook’s injury is, but the team did reveal that X-rays on the 29-year-old’s left ankle came back negative.

Russ has a pretty high pain tolerance, so I knew it was something that was serious,” – said his teammate Paul George after the game. “I was just hoping it wasn’t his knee. I thought I saw him holding his knee. I think we can all say it’s unfortunate, we can all say as bad as it was, we’re happy it wasn’t the knee and that it was just an ankle sprain.

If Russell Westbrook’s injury turns out to be grade 1 sprain, he is likely to be out for a few weeks until he fully recovers. If it’s grade 2 sprain, then he is looking towards a month of downtime. Westbrook already missed the first two games of the season, after having knee surgery in the offseason.

Westbrook is averaging 25.3 points, 8.5 rebounds and 8.8 assists per game so far in the season.

Oklahoma City Thunder’s star point guard Russell Westbrook underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Wednesday according to ESPN‘s Royce Young. While the procedure is nothing that OKC fans should worry about, the 29-year-old will miss the preseason and might not be ready for the start of the season.

Westbrook reportedly experienced “stiffness” in his right knee during the past few weeks and decided to have a procedure a pre-emptive measure.

This is the same knee Russell Westbrook suffered a meniscus tear in after a collision with Patrick Beverley in 2013 playoff series against the Houston Rockets. Following the injury, Westbrook went to have three surgeries in the following nine months but hasn’t had troubles since then. He even bounced back to win an NBA MVP award for the 2016-17 season and average a triple-double in the past two seasons.

Oklahoma City Thunder will re-evaluate Russell Westbrook after four weeks, just in time for their season opener on October 16 against the Golden State Warriors. If Westbrook gets cleared to play by the medical staff, he will be featured in the starting line-up, but OKC will not rush to get him back to the court at all means. While Westbrook is going to miss this extended period of time, the overall feeling around the organization is not alarming, and everyone expects him to get back to his usual self in November.

While Thunder had another disappointing season last year, Russell Westbrook still managed to put MVP-worthy numbers. He averaged 25.4 points, 10.2 assists, 10.1 rebounds, and 1.8 steals while being named an All-Star and earning All-NBA Second Team honors.
