After a disappointing 2020 season which saw the Boston Red Sox mired in the bottom of the American League East for the entirety of the shortened campaign, the team announced on Sunday that manager Ron Roenicke will not return to their dugout in 2021.

Roenicke, who took over the Sox during the offseason after former manager Alex Cora was suspended in the wake of the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal, led the team to a 23-36 record, the third-worst mark in the Major Leagues.

The former Brewers manager was tasked with taking over a team that traded away star outfielder Mookie Betts over the offseason in preparation for a rebuilding process.

Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom had plenty of praise for Roenicke despite the team’s decision, stating, “Throughout this difficult season, Ron’s consistency and professionalism kept the environment in our clubhouse productive and gave all of our players room to grow and develop.”

Speculation has already risen that the Red Sox could be preparing to bring back Cora as their manager after the league’s one-year suspension runs its course during the offseason.

No matter who they choose to bring it, Roenicke will be looking for another job after just one difficult season in charge of Boston.

The Boston Red Sox have named former interim skipper Ron Roenicke the team’s permanent manager after a period that saw him at the helm of the Red Sox under an interim title.

Former Sox manager Alex Cora was dismissed from his position in the wake of an MLB investigation that revealed his participation in a sign-stealing scandal while working for the Houston Astros in 2017.

Cora, who won the World Series in his debut season with the team in 2018, has been suspended for the entirety of the 2020 season thanks to his role in the scandal.

Roenicke was tabbed as Cora’s interim replacement in February, with some speculating that this tag was given to him in order to keep the franchise’s future options open for re-hiring Cora. However, the veteran manager now knows that he will at least be leading the Sox in 2020.

The 63-year-old’s contract with the Red Sox is only, however, through the 2020 season.

Roenicke’s job with the Sox is his second managerial gig in Major League Baseball, coming on the heels of a five-year tenure as the skipper of the Milwaukee Brewers from 2011 to 2015.

The California native compiled a 342-331 record with the Brew Crew, making the playoffs once as the NL Central Champions in his debut season with the team.

The Red Sox surprised many after dismissing former manager Alex Cora in the wake of a cheating scandal centered around sign-stealing that has shaken Major League Baseball this offseason.

Cora is a former member of the Houston Astros coaching staff that was discovered to have participated in a scandalous sign-stealing scheme over the past several seasons that has led to the dismissal of several coaches and front office members related to the controversy.

On Tuesday, the Sox chose the interim replacement for Cora who will be tasked with leading the team forward.

Ron Roenicke, the 63-year-old baseball lifer who previously served as the team’s bench coach under Cora, has been handed the reigns to the Red Sox in the capacity of interim manager.

That title means that, while Roenicke is the manager now, the team could eventually look to replace him with a more long-term option.

Roenicke will have his chance to earn the permanent job title, however. The California native has spent nearly two decades as a coach in the Major Leagues, and also served as the manager of the Milwaukee Brewers from 2011 to 2015, accumulating a 342-331 record along with two postseason appearances.

His job won’t be easy, as the Red Sox are coming off of a disappointing 2019 and the recent trades of star outfielder Mookie Betts and pitcher David Price, but he will attempt to do his best to lead Boston to a competitive 2020 campaign.
