The Carolina Panthers dismissed veteran head coach Ron Rivera on Tuesday after a disappointing 2019 campaign left the franchise with no choice but to move on.

Rivera, who became the fourth coach in the history of the young franchise in 2011, ultimately could not survive the disappointing 5-7 start to the season that his team has faced.

The 57-year-old coach will finish his tenure with Carolina with a 76-63-1 regular season record. He accomplished three winning seasons during his nine seasons in Carolina, winning three division titles and qualifying for the playoffs as a wild card team once.

Rivera’s best season as a coach was in 2015, when his juggernaut team led by a stingy defense and MVP quarterback Cam Newton stormed to a 15-1 regular season record. They ended up reaching the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Denver Broncos.

The former Bears and Chargers defensive coordinator finishes his head coaching tenure with the Panthers with a 3-4 playoff record.

Secondary coach Perry Fewell has been named the interim head coach for the Panthers, whose search for a new permanent head coach will begin immediately.

Rivera will likely have opportunities to find a new job as either a head coach or a defensive coordinator in the near future.

Carolina Panthers’ season took a bad turn in the past several weeks, with the team suffering four straight losses and seeing their playoff chances brought to a minimum. However, despite this bad run and the fact that his team probably won’t make it to the postseason for the second year in a row, Panthers’ head coach Ron Rivera doesn’t seem concerned about his job.

“I’m not worried about my future,” – said Rivera after a shocking 29-21 defeat to Washington Redskins on Sunday. “I’m worried about the future of this football team and we have a game coming up on Sunday.”

Rivera is considered to be on a hot seat for a while now with the team’s owner David Tepper recently saying that he won’t accept long term mediocrity. The loss to Redskins, who had only two wins prior, certainly didn’t help and only furthered the talks that 2019 might be Rivera’s last in Carolina.

Carolina Panthers had a surprisingly good start of the season, despite seeing their starting quarterback Cam Newton suffering a season-ending injury. Backup Kyle Allen stepped in, and the team entered Week 10 with 5-3 record and good chances to clinch at least NFC’s wild-card spot. Still, Panthers managed to blow their chances with some bad performances in the last weeks, and they are now facing some major decisions ahead of 2020 season, including Rivera’s future and who will be their QB of the future.

Rivera took over Panthers in 2011 and has since led them to playoffs in four seasons which also included Super Bowl 50 appearance. His overall record with Carolina is 76-63-1.

After being wiped out of the playoffs by Drew Brees and his New Orleans Saints, the Carolina Panthers are making a couple of changes in their coaching staff. The team will now look for a new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach after firing Mike Shula and Ken Dorsey on Tuesday. This might be a bit unexpected since the man who made the call, Panthers’ head coach Ron Rivera said on Monday that he doesn’t intend to make any changes to his coaching staff.

Rivera explained his decision, saying that after he re-evaluated everything and had a talk with GM Marty Hurney, he decided the team needs a different perspective.

I came to the conclusion going forward the thing we needed to do was bring in a different perspective, different ideas in terms of going forward to what I believe is our ultimate goal and that is winning a Super Bowl” – said Rivera.

The Panthers didn’t find much success in the offense with Shula as their coordinator since they never were in the top 10 during the five year he was with the team. They also finished the 2017 regular season as 19th in total offense.

According to reports, the Panthers’ have already identified the names to replace Shula and Dorsey. Their top choice for the OC position is Norv Turner, former Raiders and Chargers head coach who last served as OC with the Minnesota Vikings. Reportedly, the Panthers have already agreed on a contract with Turner. The candidates for QB coach have not been discussed.

Another issue for the Panthers is the looming exit of the defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, who already had interviews for a head coaching position with the New York Giants, the Arizona Cardinals, and the Indianapolis Colts. In case that Wilks chooses to leave the Panthers, Rivera said he will find someone who is already on his staff to fill the position.
