Veteran NFL coach Romeo Crennel announced he’s retiring on Monday, bringing an end to a coaching career spanning nearly 50 years. Thirty-nine of those years were spent coaching NFL teams, which includes Crennel’s tenures as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns and the Kansas City Chiefs. Other teams that Crennel coached in different capacities include the New England Patriots, the New York Giants, the New York Jets, and the Houston Texans.

Crennel’s latest coaching job came in 2020 when he served as the Texans’ interim coach. This position saw Crennel become the oldest person in history to serve as a head coach in the NFL at 73 years of age.

“Football has been my entire life and it’s been a dream come true to coach for 50 years. I’ll miss everything about coaching and teaching, but the thing I’ll miss the most is being around the guys every day. My goal was to put every player and coach in the best position to succeed, and I consider every guy I coached or worked with a part of my family,” Crennel stated following his retirement announcement.

In addition to his head coaching career, Crennel enjoyed a prosperous run as an assistant coach, winning five Super Bowls in this capacity. Crennel was awarded the Paul “Dr. Z” Zimmerman Award for lifetime achievement in 2020.

Houston Texans’ current interim head coach Romeo Crennel might keep the job on full-basis in 2021 according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Rapoport reported on Sunday that there is increasing support for Crennel inside the Texans’ building and that the organization is thinking about giving him another season at the helm. Crennel, who started the season as Houston’s defensive coordinator, stepped in after the team fired Bill O’Brien.

As Rapoport points out, having Crennel as the head coach in 2021 would provide the franchise with some badly-needed stability. They could also have more time to evaluate long-term solutions and think of a strategy for the future without racing with time to fill out the position.

Romeo Crennel has been a longtime assistant in the league, getting his first NFL job in 1981 as special teams coach with NY Giants. He served with several different franchises in various roles since then, while also holding two head-coaching jobs.

Crennel has been Cleveland Browns’ head coach between 2005 and 2008, having one winning season but failing to make the playoffs. He also spent 2012 with Kansas City Chiefs, posting a 2-14 record.
