20-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer has dropped out of the ATP Rankings for the first time in 25 years on Monday. It’s the first time since September 1997 when at the age of 16, he broke into the rankings by tying for 803rd place.

Ranked 97th in the world prior to the beginning of Wimbledon, the 40-year-old will now have zero points as the ranking is only based on the past 52 weeks. Federer has not competed in an ATP event since reaching the Wimbledon quarterfinals in 2021.

The Swiss tennis star previously held the record for the most time as the number one ranked ATP player; a record that was eventually broken by 21-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic.

Following his loss at Wimbledon over a year ago, Federer underwent surgery on his right knee—his third operation in approximately 18 months. Still, he remains hopeful of returning to the court in Switzerland in October this year. During an appearance at Center Court at the All England Club, Federer revealed that he hopes to appear at Wimbledon next year.

Roger Federer finally got the best of Novak Djokovic. The two tennis greats met in the group stage of ATP Finals tournament on Thursday, with Federer coming out with a 6-4, 6-3 win.

This was the first time since 2015 that Federer managed to beat Djokovic. The Swiss legend lost the previous five matchups against the Serbian, including a heartbreaking defeat in Wimbledon finals this year.

”I played incredible, and I knew I had to, because that’s what Novak does,” – said Federer after the match. ”I was able to produce, it was definitely magical.”

Roger Federer advanced to the semi-finals of the tournament with this win, while Djokovic ended up being eliminated after 1-2 record in the group stage. Federer will get Rafael Nadal or Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semis depending on the results of remaining matches.

With this early exit, Novak Djokovic missed out on the opportunity to take over Rafael Nadal for the No. 1 spot on ATP rankings. Djokovic also had a chance to equal Pete Sampras’ record, who was the top-ranked tennis player in the world six times.

“There was not much that I did right this match, to be honest. Realistically he was better player in all aspects and absolutely deserved to win,” Djokovic said. “He served great, moved well, returned my serve very well. From his end, I think he did everything right.”

It’s been a while since the French Open audience had a chance to see Roger Federer. The Swiss tennis player competed at Roland Garros last time in 2015, having missed the previous three tournaments for various reasons. But Federer, who has won one French Open title, decided to return for 2019 and is off to a good start.

In the first round of the tournament, Federer faced Italian Lorenzo Sonego on Sunday and managed to get an easy 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 win. The 37-year-old dominated the entire match and never lost his composure. Sonego, on the other side, put up a solid resistance, but a combination of bad plays and unforced errors ended up sending him home early.

You can check out the best moments of the match between Federer and Sonego below.

“I missed you; thanks very much for the welcome,” – Federer told the crowd after wrapping up the match. “I was quite tense at the start.”

Federer is set to play German Oscar Otte in the second round on Wednesday.

Other players that secured their place in the second round include Marin Cilic, who defeated Thomas Fabbiano 6-3, 7-5, 6-1, and Nicolas Mahut, who came back from 2-0 deficit to overcome 2018’s French Open semi-finalist Marco Cecchinato.

Roger Federer decided to downplay his chances of winning the last Grand Slam of the season; US Open 2018. Federer, who won the tournament on five previous occasions, singled out his rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic as the leading two contenders to lift the trophy.

I’m not the favorite; they are. Rafa and Novak, in my opinion,” – said the 37-year-old. “I’m happy that my level, you know, is there. I just need to figure out my game, get used to different balls. It’s always beautiful when you play with different balls here and there. That’s going to be just something I’m going to be working on. I just gotta come up with a lot of energy, and then hopefully I also have a chance after 10 years to do something special again at the Open.

Roger Federer started the 2018 tennis season in the best way possible, winning the Australian Open and becoming the first man to win twenty Grand Slam titles. After reclaiming the No.1 position on ATP rankings, Federer skipped the second Grand Slam of the season, French Open, in order to focus on Wimbledon. At Wimbledon, Swiss was looking to defend the title he won in 2017 but was stopped by South African Kevin Anderson in the quarterfinals.

Before the US Open, Roger Federer finds himself ranked second on ATP rankings. Rafael Nadal is the top-ranked tennis player in the world, while Novak Djokovic is ranked sixth.

Roger Federer continues to set new bars for all other tennis players. The 36-year-old Switzerland native defeated Dutch player Robin Haase in quarterfinals of ABN AMRO World Tournament, which meant that he will become the oldest tennis player in the history of the sport to sit at the top of ATP Rankings. Rafael Nadal holds the No.1 in ATP rankings at the moment, but he will slip on the second spot after the rankings get updated on Monday.

Getting to No. 1 and enjoying it right here at 36, almost 37 years old is an absolute dream come true,” – said Federer about this feat. “I can’t believe it.

The previous record was held by American Andre Agassi, who managed to climb to No.1 in rankings at age of 33.

Last time Roger Federer was at the top was almost five years ago. He will now also extend his record of weeks in which he was the leading male tennis player, which currently stands at 302. Far away on the second spot in weeks at the top is Pete Sampras who managed to last 286 weeks at No. 1 in his career.

Reaching No. 1 is one of, if not the ultimate achievement in our sport,” –said Federer. “Sometimes at the beginning, you get there just because you play so well. Later, you sometimes try to fight it back and you wrest it back from somebody else who deserved to be there, and when you’re older you feel like you have to put maybe double the work in. So this one maybe means the most to me throughout my career.

2018 couldn’t start better for Roger Federer since he previously managed to win 20th Grand Slam title in his career. He managed to retain his title of Australian Open champion, beating Marin Cilic to claim the first Grand Slam of the season.
