Inter Miami announced on Saturday that Mexican midfielder Rodolfo Pizarro will leave the club. The two sides agreed to a mutual contract termination, and Pizarro will now be a free agent.

Pizarro played 13 games with Miami this season but has failed to score a single goal and has only one assist to his name.

Pizarro’s underwhelming performances are not the only reason why he is leaving Inter. The club wrapped up the signing of Argentinean star Lionel Messi this week and needed a roster spot.

Rodolfo Pizarro joined Inter on a Designated Player contract in 2020 after stellar performances with Liga MX side Monterrey. He was expected to be one of the cornerstone players of Miami’s squad but failed to do much in MLS.

Pizzaro ended up playing 62 games with Inter in MLS, scoring seven goals and dishing 10 assists. He also spent parts of the previous two seasons on loan with Monterrey.

Reportedly, Pizzaro already has a new landing spot. He is set to sign with Greek club AEK Athens. The move will reunite him with manager Matías Almeyda. The two previously spent time together with Liga MX club Chivas.

Inter Miami’s attacking midfielder Rodolfo Pizarro recently received a call-up for Mexico national team, getting an opportunity to add to his 25 appearances for his native country. This, however, didn’t sit well with the MLS side.

If Pizarro accepts the call, he will miss up to two-thirds of Inter’s remaining nine regular-season games due to travels and required quarantine on his return. And with the club still in play to make the Finals series playoffs, the absence of the 26-year-old midfielder would seriously hurt their chances to get there.

“We have made it very clear that we want Rodolfo to stay with us,” Inter Miami coach Diego Alonso told reporters on Thursday. “We are in conversations with MLS and FIFA to try to reach a resolution. It is a difficult situation for Rodolfo because he wants to play for his national team, but also wants to help our team.”

According to Alonso, Miami will let Pizarro leave if forced, but they remain hopeful that the player will choose the team over the national side. 

“If we are obligated to release him to the national team, we will, but if we don’t have to, we won’t,” he added. “There are good reasons for him to stay with us. He will respect whatever decision is made.”

Mexico is scheduled to play two games early this month, facing Netherlands and Algeria. However, both contests are friendly games, which makes the result not so crucial. This is one of the reasons why Rodolfo Pizarro might sit this gathering out.

After getting used to MLS, Pizzaro emerged as an important player for Inter Miami in the recent period. In 12 games he played in 2020, he scored three goals while adding four assists.

Inter Miami CF finally decided to make a splash this offseason. After the team failed to attract some big European stars they targeted in recent months, Inter turned to Liga MX and managed to make a deal for attacking midfielder Rodolfo Pizarro with Monterrey.

Miami was linked with Pizarro for several weeks now, with multiple reports surfacing about the deal. According to sources, Inter managed to get the move done by meeting the release clause in player’s contract, reportedly set at $12 million.

The 25-year-old was signed as a Designated Player, filling one of the team’s two remaining DP spots. Inter is saving the second in hopes that they will still manage to bring a proven veteran from Europe.

“We’re very happy to have a player of Rodolfo’s quality join the Club,” said Inter Miami’s sporting director Paul McDonough. “He is a creative midfielder who strengthens our roster and elevates everyone’s quality on the field.”

Rodolfo Pizarro spent his entire career in native Mexico, where he also played with Guadalajara and Pachuca. He joined Monterrey in 2018 and has since played in 63 games in all competitions, contributing with nine goals and five assists.
