Jacksonville Jaguars’ defensive lineman Rodney Gunter announced on Sunday that he is retiring from professional football due to heart condition he is dealing with. Gunter, who’s 28 years old, is ending his career after six years in the league.

Gunter made the announcement via social media, writing that several specialists told him that his condition could have tragic consequences if he continues to play football. Surgery could fix the issue, but he doesn’t qualify for one just yet.

“So at this moment, the best choice for me and my family is to walk away from this game,” Gunter wrote on Twitter. “I appreciate the Jaguars for giving me an opportunity, and I’m thankful for everyone who has believed in me along the way. Thank you!”

Gunter joined the Jags this offseason on a three-year, $18 million contract as a replacement for Calais Campbell. He previously spent four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, where he played 77 games at nose tackle, defensive tackle, and defensive end.

During his time in Arizona, Gunter compiled 126 tackles, 11.0 sacks, and 29 quarterback hits.

Arizona Cardinals are not wasting any time in retooling their roster to fit the vision of their new head coach Kliff Kingsbury. The team announced on Tuesday that they have re-signed defensive end Rodney Gunter to one-year-deal while securing the signatures of four more players: tight end Darrell Daniels and offensive linemen Jeremy Vujnovich, Andrew Lauderdale and Jeremiah Poutasi.

Gunter, who was an unrestricted free agent this offseason, sparked the interest of several other NFL teams and visited Green Bay Packers last week. After considering all of his options, the 27-year-old ended up deciding to return to Arizona where he spent his entire NFL career.

Cardinals drafted Rodney Gunter in the fourth round of 2015 NFL draft and used him in the backup role in his first three seasons. Gunter managed to get a more prominent role in 2018 season in which he started 10 games and had 44 tackles and 4.5 sacks alongside nine QB hits.

Darrell Daniels and Jeremy Vujnovich both joined the Arizona Cardinals during the last season, and although they didn’t play much, the duo obviously showed enough to get another chance.

Andrew Lauderdale and Jeremiah Poutasi, on the other side, join from Alliance of American Football after the league recently suspended its operations. Lauderdale previously played in NFL with San Francisco 49ers and Buffalo Bills among other teams while Poutasi spent time with Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars.
