Veteran second baseman Robinson Cano is set to become jobless once again this season. The eight-time All-Star has been designated for assignment by the Atlanta Braves on Monday and will be looking for a new team after he clears waivers.

Cano, who joined the Braves in a trade with the San Diego Padres in June, is ending his spell with the team after a disastrous .154 batting average and no homers or RBIs in nine games.

The team confirmed the move alongside the announcement that infielder Ehire Adrianza joined the club in a trade with Washington Nationals. Atlanta sent prospect outfielder Trey Harris to Washington as part of the move.

Robinson Cano started the 2022 campaign with the New York Mets but was released by the franchise after a .195 batting average with one homer and 3 RBIs in 12 games. The Mets cut the player despite owing him $45 million for the remainder of his deal.

Cano then landed with the Padres but only lasted 12 games after hitting .094 and having one RBI. San Diego decided to dump him to Atlanta in exchange for cash consideration.

Over the course of his career, which included stops with New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners, Cano batted .301. He has 2,639 hits, 335 home runs, and 1,306 RBIs.

The New York Mets have released veteran second baseman Robinson Cano on Sunday. The move comes after the franchise designated him for assignment earlier in May.

The Mets made this move even though Cano still had two years and $45 million left on his deal. The 39-year-old player is expected the get the full amount owed to him and is also free to sign with another MLB team.

Cano struggled in 2022 after not playing at all in 2021 due to a suspension. He batted .195 in 12 games this season while having only one home run and three RBIs. It remains to be seen if he’ll get a chance from another team to bounce back or if his career in the majors is over.

The Mets acquired Robinson Cano in a blockbuster trade with Seattle Mariners ahead of the 2019 MLB season. At that point, Cano had five years and $100 million left on the 10-year, $240 million contract he signed with the Mariners in 2013.

Cano battled injuries and inconsistency in his first year with the Mets, batting .256 with 13 home runs and 39 RBIs. He managed to improve his production in shortened 2020 MLB season with a batting average of.316, 10 homers, and 30 RBIs, but ended up being an outlier in his troubled stint with the Mets.

Cano, who started his MLB career with the NY Yankees in 2005, has eight All-Star appearances and World Series title from 2009 on his resume. His career stats include a .302 batting average, 2,632 hits, 335 home runs, and 1,305 RBIs.

The New York Mets won their 9th game in the past ten contests on Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates. This win pushed them to 55-56 and only three games out of an NL Wild Card spot, continuing a run that has seen the Mets miraculously get back into playoff contention.

Noah Syndergaard dominated and the offense wreaked havoc in a 13-2 victory, but the Mets couldn’t even avoid bad news as they continued their hot run on Sunday.

Canó rapped his third consecutive hit to start the game but pulled up lame as he attempted to stretch his hit into a double. The Dominican second baseman immediately clutched at his left hamstring and allowed himself to be tagged out.

The high-money superstar then immediately exited the game, leaving the Mets and their fans to wonder if they’re set to suffer yet another extended injury absence for their second baseman.

Canó hasn’t quite lived up to expectations in his debut season with New York, but he’s improved recently, raising his season OPS to .710 and his batting average to .252. He’s been a key reason for the Mets’ recent turnaround.

The 36-year-old will undergo an MRI to know the extent of his hamstring injury, with both him and the Mets keeping their fingers crossed that he won’t be forced to miss too much time.

Mets veteran second baseman has played for 15 seasons in the MLB, recording 320 home runs in 2,153 career games.

Before Tuesday, however, he has never gone deep three times in one game. That changed after a memorable performance in a 5-2 Mets win over the San Diego Padres.

Canó, who has been slumping in the midst of his worst career season, broke out for three home runs in front of the Citi Field crowd to lead the Mets to victory.

Canó had been batting .246 with only 6 home runs in a slow start to his tenure with the Mets. The veteran second baseman has dealt with questions as to whether or not his days as a productive MLB player have come and gone. With his performance on Tuesday, those doubts were laid to rest, at least for one night.

Canó’s first bomb of the night was a fourth in inning solo shot off of Padres starter Chris Paddack to open the scoring. Next, the Dominican second baseman tagged Paddack again for a two-run homer in the sixth inning to extend New York’s lead to 3-0.

His final long ball of the night came off of reliever Logan Allen in the 7th, another two-run shot. He finished the night 4-4 with 5 RBI.

2019 has been a year to forget for the fourth-place Mets and their highly-paid second baseman, but July 23rd is a day that they’ll want to remember forever.

Mets veteran second baseman has played for 15 seasons in the MLB, recording 320 home runs in 2,153 career games.
