Veteran second baseman Robinson Cano is set to become jobless once again this season. The eight-time All-Star has been designated for assignment by the Atlanta Braves on Monday and will be looking for a new team after he clears waivers.

Cano, who joined the Braves in a trade with the San Diego Padres in June, is ending his spell with the team after a disastrous .154 batting average and no homers or RBIs in nine games.

The team confirmed the move alongside the announcement that infielder Ehire Adrianza joined the club in a trade with Washington Nationals. Atlanta sent prospect outfielder Trey Harris to Washington as part of the move.

Robinson Cano started the 2022 campaign with the New York Mets but was released by the franchise after a .195 batting average with one homer and 3 RBIs in 12 games. The Mets cut the player despite owing him $45 million for the remainder of his deal.

Cano then landed with the Padres but only lasted 12 games after hitting .094 and having one RBI. San Diego decided to dump him to Atlanta in exchange for cash consideration.

Over the course of his career, which included stops with New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners, Cano batted .301. He has 2,639 hits, 335 home runs, and 1,306 RBIs.

The New York Mets have released veteran second baseman Robinson Cano on Sunday. The move comes after the franchise designated him for assignment earlier in May.

The Mets made this move even though Cano still had two years and $45 million left on his deal. The 39-year-old player is expected the get the full amount owed to him and is also free to sign with another MLB team.

Cano struggled in 2022 after not playing at all in 2021 due to a suspension. He batted .195 in 12 games this season while having only one home run and three RBIs. It remains to be seen if he’ll get a chance from another team to bounce back or if his career in the majors is over.

The Mets acquired Robinson Cano in a blockbuster trade with Seattle Mariners ahead of the 2019 MLB season. At that point, Cano had five years and $100 million left on the 10-year, $240 million contract he signed with the Mariners in 2013.

Cano battled injuries and inconsistency in his first year with the Mets, batting .256 with 13 home runs and 39 RBIs. He managed to improve his production in shortened 2020 MLB season with a batting average of.316, 10 homers, and 30 RBIs, but ended up being an outlier in his troubled stint with the Mets.

Cano, who started his MLB career with the NY Yankees in 2005, has eight All-Star appearances and World Series title from 2009 on his resume. His career stats include a .302 batting average, 2,632 hits, 335 home runs, and 1,305 RBIs.

Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday that Seattle Mariners All-Star second baseman Robinson Cano has been given an 80 games ban after testing positive for a banned substance Furosemide. During that period of time, Cano won’t receive a pay and will be illegible for the postseason and All-Star game.

Robinson Cano issued a statement following the announcement, explaining that Furosemide was prescribed to him by a doctor in the Dominican Republic and that he didn’t know the medicine was among the banned substances. He also said he accepts the suspension and thanked his fans for the support.

For more than 15 years, playing professional baseball has been the greatest honor and privilege of my life.” – said Cano in a statement released by the MLB Players Association. “I would never do anything to cheat the rules of the game that I love, and after undergoing dozens of drug tests over more than a decade, I have never tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance for the simple reason that I have never taken one.

You can read his full statement below.

The ban comes just days after Robinson Cano fractured his hand in the game against Detroit Tigers. According to ESPN‘s sources, Cano underwent a surgery on Tuesday and could be out for six to eight weeks.

Seattle Mariners also issued a statement in expressing their support for the player.

Robinson made a mistake,” – said the Mariners in the statement. “He has explained to us what happened, accepted the punishment and has apologized to the fans, the organization, and his teammates. We will support Robinson as he works through this challenge.

Robinson Canó started his MLB career with the New York Yankees in 2005 and went on to receive five Silver Slugger awards and two Golden Glove awards during his nine years with the team. He also won World Series in 2009 with the Yankees. In 2014, he decided to join the Mariners, signing a 10-year, $240 million contract.
