Veteran forward Robert Covington opted not to test the free-agency market this year. Instead, Covington accepted a new contract from the Clippers that will see him stay in Los Angeles for at least two more seasons.

The news about the extension was confirmed by Covington’s agent Andrew Morrison. According to Morrison, his client received a two-year deal worth $24 million.

The Clippers acquired Covington back in February in a trade with Portland Trail Blazers. The 31-year-old player played 23 games with the LA team in 2021-22 and put together an impressive showing. He averaged 10.4 points and 5.1 rebounds off the bench while being one of the team’s most dependable players on the defensive end.

Robert Covington entered the NBA as an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee State in 2013. He started his pro career with the Houston Rockets before embarking on stints with the Philadelphia 76ers, the Minnesota Timberwolves, and the Blazers. Covington, who has one NBA All-Defensive First Team selection on his resume, is averaging 11.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per game as a pro.

By extending Covington, the LA Clippers are signaling that they believe they can win a championship with this roster next season. Still, their chances will mostly depend on the health of their superstars Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. Leonard missed the entire 2021-22 due to an ACL tear, while George was limited to 31 games. However, it is worth noting that the franchise believes both players will be ready for the start of the 2022-23 NBA season.

Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert earned the most votes for NBA All-Defensive First Team, the league has announced on Wednesday. Gobert, who is also the favorite for Defensive Player of the Year, earned 94 First Team votes. He averaged 13.5 points, 10.7 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game during the regular season, and was the big part of the Jazz’s Western Conference first-round win against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Behind Gobert is New Orleans Pelicans’ forward Anthony Davis who earned his first NBA All-Defensive First Team selection. Davis, who has two NBA All-Defensive Second Team selections, earned 73 first-team votes. He had an MVP-worthy campaign after the Pelicans lost DeMarcus Cousins, averaging 28.1 points, 11.1 rebounds, 1.5 steals and led the league in blocks with 2.6 per game.

Rudy Gobert and Anthony Davis are joined on NBA All-Defensive First Team by Indiana Pacers guard Victor Oladipo, Pelicans guard Jrue Holiday and Philadelphia 76ers forward Robert Covington. This is also the first selection for Oladipo, Holiday and Covington.

NBA Defensive Player of the Year finalist, 76ers’ Joel Embiid, didn’t find his place on the NBA All-Defensive First Team. He did, however, made it into NBA All-Defensive Second Team selection. He is joined by Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green, Boston Celtics center Al Horford, San Antonio Spurs guard Dejounte Murray and Minnesota Timberwolves guard Jimmy Butler.
