Veteran kicker Robbie Gould is still on the free agent market, waiting for the right opportunity to come his way. However, this isn’t how he planned on having his offseason shape up.

Speaking with reporters during the American Century Championship event, Gould said that he wanted to return to the San Francisco 49ers for the 2023 NFL season. However, the franchise never ended up offering him a contract.

“I would’ve loved to have gone back there,” Gould said. “I told them I wanted to go back there. We never got an offer from the team, and we never had a conversation about coming back.”

It turned out that the 49ers had other plans, drafting Jake Moody out of Michigan in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The team also brought in veteran Zane Gonzalez to solidify the kicker position, leaving Gould out in the cold.

Robbie Gould should have trouble finding a team at some point in the 2023 season. Despite being set to turn 41 in December, he still remains a reliable kicker who is capable of making big-time field goals.

Gould converted 27 out of his 32 field goals attempted last season while making both of his attempts from 50+ yards. He also missed only one out of 51 extra-point tries.

Veteran kicker Robbie Gould said last month that he is nowhere near retiring despite recently turning 40 and having 18 seasons in NFL under his belt. But this doesn’t mean Gould will continue kicking for the San Francisco 49ers.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Gould told the 49ers that he would explore his options in free agency this offseason and plans to kick for a new team in the 2023 season.

Gould spent the previous six years with the 49ers and has been most dependable when called upon. He was good on 27 field goals out of 31 attempted while drilling all but one of his 51 PATs in 2022.

The veteran’s decision to leave San Francisco isn’t all that surprising, considering he already requested a trade back in 2019. The 49ers declined his request at the time, instead giving him a contract extension to keep him around for four more seasons.

Gould will most likely attract much interest from teams looking to upgrade their kicking game. He has converted 86.5% of his career field goals and has made 620 extra points out of 636 attempts.

The 49ers will now have to add a kicker position to their off-season needs. The franchise will most likely opt to get a veteran in the building while also signing a rookie to their practice squad as an insurance policy.

San Francisco 49ers will most likely have to find a new kicker for 2019. Starter Robbie Gould decided to pull out of long-term contract negotiations with the team and asked to be traded.

Back in February, the 49ers placed a franchise tag on Gould while also pursuing other solutions on the position including New England Patriots’ Stephen Gostkowski. This, combined with lengthy negotiations, caused Gould to withdraw his contract proposal and inform the organization that he doesn’t intend to sign long-term with them.

“The bottom line is, I’m unsure if I want to play there anymore,” – Gould told ESPN. “At this point, I have to do what’s best for me and my family back home.”

San Francisco 49ers, on the other hand, have no doubts about their wishes to keep Robbie Gould on the roster for years to come.

“Robbie’s going to be a part of us this coming year, I know that,” – San Franciso’s general manager John Lynch told reporters on Monday. “We would like it to be longer than that. We’ve made an attempt to make that happen. We haven’t come to an agreement as of yet and we’ll see where that goes, but Robbie will be a part of us this coming year. We’re excited for that because he’s very good at what he does and he’s also a big part of this team.”

Gould’s trade request puts the 49ers in a tough spot as they have no solid backup kicker option on their roster. The team will now probably start thinking about getting one either on free agent market or in the upcoming draft.

Since joining San Francisco in 2017, Gould established himself as one of the league’s best kickers, having made 72 field goals out of 75 attempted. His career highlights include Pro Bowl selection and First Team All-Pro honors in 2006.

Kurt Warner’s story is an unusual one, to say the least. How many now-famous athletes had to work a terrible, low-paying job even after being given the chance to play for one of the biggest sports teams in the world? Far-fetched as it may sound, that was the reality for the future NFL legend in 1994. After being signed as a free agent by the Green Bay Packers, the young quarterback was cut from the team before the season began, forcing him to resort to his backup plan: working the night shift at his hometown supermarket for $5.50 an hour.

NFL kicker Robbie Gould may now be hailed as a hero amongst Chicago natives for his athletic dominance, but his ascent to stardom did not always seem so inevitable. As recently as 2005, the future football star was simply a discarded NFL hopeful putting his natural athleticism and razor-sharp precision to use in a significantly less glamorous industry: construction work. Gould had been cut by both the Patriots and the Ravens when he took a part-time construction job, his hopes getting bleaker by the day. Who could have known that he would eventually become a superstar thanks to a very different kind of manual labor?

Those searching for a real-life Cinderella story need look no further: basketball star Giannis Antetokounmpo’s journey to success would melt even the coldest of hearts. The 19-year-old hoops sensation has already overcome enough hardship for two lifetimes, having gone from an impoverished child selling toys and begging for money on the streets of Athens to signing million-dollar NBA contracts in just a few years. Needless to say, it is likely that the “Greek Freak” will never have to worry about feeding his family again.

Maurice Alexander

After being suspended from Utah State for fighting with a teammate, Maurice Alexander’s career prospects as a professional football player seemed far from promising. Not only was he excluded from the activity at which he excelled most at a crucial time in his life; he also found himself completely unqualified to do anything else. That is when the future NFL safety opted to return home temporarily and refocus on his career, taking a job as a janitor at the Edward Jones Dome in the meantime. Two years later, Alexander was drafted by the Rams to play football at that very stadium.

As a record-holding NFL superstar, J.J. Watt is likely the source of inspiration for legions of children around the country. Ironically enough, Watt may never have enjoyed such a career in the first place if not for one child that inspired him. In college, the talented tight end had quit playing football and was delivering pizzas for a measly wage when he ran into a 10-year-old boy that recognized him. The boy asking him why he no longer played inspired him to retire his Pizza Hut uniform and get back on the field. The football pro now donates massive amounts of money and time to helping children through his charity work, fitting to character.
