Although considered one of the most talented players in his draft class, New York Knicks’ guard RJ Barrett isn’t among the favorites to win the NBA Rookie of the Year award. But that won’t stop him from trying.

In a recent chat with New York Daily News, Barret discussed the fact that his peers didn’t show a lot of confidence in him in a recent NBA’s rookie survey about the ROY award winner. The 19-year-old Canadian ended up tied for the third position in the pool, receiving just five percent of the votes.

“When it’s all said and done and you see the actual results, nobody is going to remember the survey,” – said Barrett about the survey.

The doubters will probably end up fueling Barrett’s determination even more as he added that winning the award is “definitely important” for him.

“(Rookie of the Year) is definitely important. It’s something I’ve been thinking about since I was a kid,” – he explained. “So I thought the only way to do that is to work hard.”

RJ Barrett is facing tough competition for the NBA Rookie of the Year award, namely from his former Duke teammate and New Orleans Pelicans’ forward Zion Williamson. The overwhelming opinion around the league is that Williamson will have a central role in Pelicans’ game this upcoming season, which should boost his chances of winning the award. Another strong candidate is Memphis Grizzlies Ja Morant.

Duke’s guard RJ Barrett is making sure that there is no doubt about the team he would like to play for in the NBA. After attending his workout with the New York Knicks, Barrett told the reporters that he won’t be meeting with any other teams until the 2019 NBA Draft.

“I won’t be meeting with any other teams,” – said Barrett on Monday. “This is the place I want to be, so I hope they draft me.”

The Knicks hold the No.3 pick in this year’s draft, and Barrett is considered the third best prospect in his class, so his whish could easily come true. This is, of course, if the team keeps the pick.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Knicks are interested in acquiring New Orleans Pelicans’ All-Star Anthony Davis and are ready to put up a trade package that revolves around the third overall pick.

RJ Barrett came out of high school as a potential first overall pick, but his draft stocks slightly dipped during his freshman year at college due to the rise of his Duke teammate Zion Williamson. Barrett still delivered a great season, however, and averaged 22.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game.

Williamson is almost universally considered the top pick in this year’s draft, with Murray State’s guard Ja Morant projected to go second overall.
