Veteran wide receiver Rishard Matthews isn’t getting back on the market after being released by New Orleans Saints over the weekend. Instead, Matthews decided to end his career and retire from NFL at the age of 29.

Matthews announced his decision via a social media post titled “No Longer Exist.”

“It was cool being a professional football player and getting to play a kid’s game for work,” – Matthews wrote on Instagram. “I will always be a fan of the best sport in the world but for me, that kid’s game no longer exist[s].”

Matthews was released by Saints on Saturday, just one day after being featured in team’s first preseason game. Reportedly, New Orleans opted to part ways with him after he decided to leave the training camp.

Entering the league as a seven-round draft pick in 2012, Rishard Matthews spent the first four years of his career with the Miami Dolphins. After solid performances in Miami, Matthews signed a three-year deal with Tennessee Titans in 2016 and immediately had a breakthrough season, contributing with 65 receptions for 945 yards and nine touchdowns.

In 2018, Matthews decided to ask for a release from Titans, citing lack of minutes as the reason. Tennessee obliged and he ended up signing with New York Jets, where he played five games before landing on injured reserve.

Matthews leaves the league with 230 career receptions for 3,160 yards and 21 TDs.

New Orleans Saints are giving their quarterback Drew Brees more weapons for 2019. According to a report from ESPN‘s Field Yates, Saints have signed veteran wide receiver Rishard Matthews on a deal.

Matthews spent the Saints’ camp training with the team, and it seems like the team was satisfied with what they’ve seen from the 29-year-old.

“Today he did some good things,” – Saints’ head coach Sean Payton said of Matthews during the camp. “He’s smart, so he has some experience. It’s a chance for us to see him and see how he handles what we are doing from an install standpoint. I think he catches it well. I would say it’s really a two-practice evaluation. It has been pretty good.”

Rishard Matthews was a seventh-round pick in 2012 by the Miami Dolphins, where he spent four years before embarking on stints with Tennessee Titans and New York Jets. His best season came in 2015 when he had 65 catches for 945 yards and nine touchdowns with the Titans.
