New Orleans Saints are giving their quarterback Drew Brees more weapons for 2019. According to a report from ESPN‘s Field Yates, Saints have signed veteran wide receiver Rishard Matthews on a deal.

Matthews spent the Saints’ camp training with the team, and it seems like the team was satisfied with what they’ve seen from the 29-year-old.

“Today he did some good things,” – Saints’ head coach Sean Payton said of Matthews during the camp. “He’s smart, so he has some experience. It’s a chance for us to see him and see how he handles what we are doing from an install standpoint. I think he catches it well. I would say it’s really a two-practice evaluation. It has been pretty good.”

Rishard Matthews was a seventh-round pick in 2012 by the Miami Dolphins, where he spent four years before embarking on stints with Tennessee Titans and New York Jets. His best season came in 2015 when he had 65 catches for 945 yards and nine touchdowns with the Titans.

Matthews’ career stats include 230 receptions for 3,160 yards and 21 TDs.

Former Tennessee Titans wide receiver Rishard Matthews has found himself a new job. After his recent workouts with Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals didn’t get him a contract, Matthews managed to land one with the New York Jets on Tuesday.

The Jets found themselves in need for a WR after finding out that their leading receiver Quincy Enunwa, who managed to catch 22 passes for 287 yards and a touchdown this season, might miss several weeks due to a high ankle sprain. New York also released wideout Terrelle Pryor a few days ago, after the 29-year-old suffered a groin injury.

New York Jets reportedly had much bigger plans that Rishard Matthews and were engaged in talks with Oakland Raiders in order to acquire Pro Bowler Amari Cooper. But Dallas Cowboys made a lot better offer for Cooper, and Jets ended up empty-handed.

Rishard Matthews started his NFL career with the Miami Dolphins, who took him in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL Draft. After four years in Miami, during which he didn’t show much, Matthews signed with the Titans in 2016.

In the next two years, Matthews established himself as the team’s leading wide receiver and managed 118 receptions for 1,740 yards and 13 touchdowns. Despite this, Tennessee didn’t give him much opportunity at the start of 2018, and he ended up asking for a release which was granted by the team.

Tennessee Titans announced on Tuesday that they had signed wide receiver Rishard Matthews to a one-year extension. Matthews, who was set to become a free agent after 2018 season, now has a contract for an additional year which will see him receiving $7.75 million for 2019.

According to ESPN, the 28-year old can now earn $1.375 million more through various bonuses in 2018 than he was scheduled to.

It is also important to note that this extra year is a team-option that Titans have to decide on before the end of 2018 season.

This extension finds Rishard Matthews still on the physically unable to perform list. He failed to take part in training camp since it started but was seen running routes. According to Titans’ coach Mike Vrabel, Matthews “simply isn’t ready” to take part in the regular practice.
