The Philadelphia Phillies confirmed on Friday that their veteran first baseman Rhys Hoskins has a torn ACL. According to the team president Dave Dombrowski, the injury will keep Hoskins out of action for the entire 2023 season.

Hoskins suffered an injury during Phillies’ spring training game on Thursday. He is expected to have surgery in the near future and spend seven months rehabbing.

“He will need to have surgery,” Dombrowski told reporters. “I would be shocked if he doesn’t. And that will put him out … for the season. That’s what we’re planning.”

Losing Hoskins is a tough blow for the Phillies, considering his production in the 2022 campaign that saw him hit 30 homers with 79 RBIs. It doesn’t help that the team was already dealing with a number of other injuries, including star Bryce Harper, who will be out at least until the All-Star break after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

With Hoskins out, the Phillies will rely on Darick Hall to man the first base. Hall, who was the 14th overall pick in 2016, played 41 games last season, his first in the majors. He finished the campaign hitting .250 with nine home runs and 16 RBIs.

The Philadelphia Phillies’ chances of reaching the postseason look even slimmer on Friday. The team confirmed that they have lost Rhys Hoskins to an abdomen injury and that the first baseman won’t return this season.

Hoskins played hurt the entire 2021 campaign, but that didn’t stop him from putting up impressive performances and leading the Phillies in home runs with 27. However, the 28-year-old baseman’s injury got worse earlier this month during an attempt to catch the ball against Washington Nationals.

Hoskins then spent a couple of weeks on the Injured List before making a return last weekend. He ended up playing two games before realizing the issue is still bothering him.

“The magnitude with where we are as a team, and the time of year, as a player you want to be out there to help your team as much as you can. There’s been a lot of effort the last couple weeks to make that an option, but unfortunately sometimes the body just doesn’t respond,” said Hoskins, who is also leading the team in RBIs with 71.

In the next few weeks, Hoskins will undergo surgery to deal with his abdomen injury. He is expected to be fully fit for the 2022 MLB season.

The Philadelphia Phillies have lately been on a disastrous run that saw them pick up just two wins in 10 games. This skid has resulted in a 63-64 record and falling 5.5 games behind Atlanta Braves in NL East. The team is also sitting 6.0 games behind the last wild-card spot.

The Philadelphia Phillies have announced that their starting first baseman Rhys Hoskins is scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery and will likely have to miss 4-6 months.

There are two reasons why doctors believe that he can make such a quick recovery. First, he will not be having surgery on his throwing arm, and second, because he is not a pitcher. It usually takes pitchers well over a year to recovery from Tommy John surgery.

Fellow Phillie Didi Gregorius, who plays shortstop, had Tommy John surgery in October 2018 and was back on the field and playing in June 2017. Gregorius had the surgery on his throwing arm.

Even though the surgery will not affect Hoskins’s ability to throw the ball, he is most concerned with being able to swing the bat naturally and without any discomfort, which is most likely what his rehabilitation will focus on.

At the plate is where Hoskins shines. His batting line this season before the injury was .245/.384/.503, hitting 10 home runs in 41 games.

The Phillies hope that they will have Hoskins back by spring training and ready to go for their April 1 season opener against the Atlanta Braves.
