Super-utilityman Enrique Hernandez will return to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a deal that will see two relievers, Nick Robertson and Justin Hagenman, depart for the Boston Red Sox.

As part of the deal reached on Tuesday, the Red Sox have agreed to pay $2.5 million of the roughly $3.5 million remaining on Hernandez’s current contract.

“Obviously he helped us win a championship and had his best years here in a Dodger uniform,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Hernandez. “I know the fans are excited. He’s got a great relationship with the fans, does a lot of stuff in the community, and I think for us it’s more of — he hasn’t had the best of seasons, but the bet is being back home, the familiarity, kinda can tap back into being the player that we know he can be and that we’ve seen.”

Hernandez first played for the Dodgers from 2015 until 2020. He is fondly remembered by fans for his tying home run in Game 7 of the 2020 National League Championship Series, helping the Dodgers to win their first World Series title in over 30 years.

Rafael Devers has agreed to a one-year, $17.5 million contract with the Boston Red Sox, sources confirmed on Tuesday. The third baseman is reportedly looking to avoid arbitration, while both sides hope to negotiate a long-term deal.

While Devers is currently set to become a free agent in 2023, the Red Sox are looking to strike a long-term deal that will keep the 26-year-old in Boston until his 30s. The team is in need of squad reinforcements following the departures of homegrown talents Mookie Bett and Xander Bogaerts, who left via trade and free agency respectively.

Last season, Devers hit .295/.358/.521 for the Red Sox with 27 home runs and 88 RBIs. Over his six seasons in Boston, Devers has tallied 139 home runs and 455 RBIs, hitting .295/.358/.521 in the process.

The Red Sox have proven to be busy during the offseason, signing a growing list of players including infielder Justin Turner, outfielder Masataka Yoshida, starter Corey Kluber, and relievers Kenley Jansen, Chris Martin, and Joely Rodriguez. Xander Bogaerts and Nathan Eovaldi went in the opposite direction, joining the San Diego Padres and the Texas Rangers respectively.

Boston Red Sox are enjoying a surprisingly disappointing 2020 MLB season. After a recent 4-2 defeat to the New York Yankees, they find themselves on a seven-game losing streak and with AL’s worst record (6-16). Some changes are clearly needed, and it appears that Red Sox are well aware of that.

The Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom had a chat with The Boston Globe over the weekend and decided to address the team’s struggles.

“Obviously, the results have not been what we wanted,” said Bloom. “We knew that we were down a couple of pitchers and that this was going to be an area of our team that was a work in progress, and certainly we’ve gotten really poor results so far.”

Red Sox entered this year with a notably weaker roster after trading away 2018’s AL MVP Mookie Betts and five-time All-Star pitcher David Price to LA Dodgers during the offseason. Things got worse when the team had to kick off the season without starter Eduardo Rodriguez and All-Star Chris Sale, while poor hitting and unreliable defense also did their part in setting up Boston for failure.

Getting Red Sox back on track won’t be easy with all the issues, with Bloom acknowledging the challenge.

“This isn’t what any of us want,” he added. “There’s a lot of work to do.”

After a long and successful career at second base for the Boston Red Sox, it appears that team legend Dustin Pedroia might not ever be able to return to the baseball field.

Pedroia told reporters on Monday that he had suffered another setback in the rehabilitation of his left knee and that he was going to take an indefinite break from rehabbing.

When directly asked if he’d ever be able to return to the game, Pedroia replied that he didn’t know.

This news could mean that Pedroia’s career has come to a close.

In response to the news, Boston transferred Pedroia to the 60-day Injured List in order to free up a spot on the club’s 40-man roster.

Pedroia’s left knee has constantly given him problems since the 2016 season when he underwent the first of three surgeries to try to repair the damage. The diminutive second baseman was able to play in 105 games in the 2017 season after undergoing the procedure, but he’s only played in 9 Major League games during the past two seasons. Pedroia only lasted until April 16th this season, when he was transferred to the injured list with knee inflammation after appearing in only six games.

If this is, in fact, the end of the road for Pedroia, he will have had a spectacular career with the Sox. Pedroia won 3 World Series rings during his career with Boston, batting .299 with 140 home runs and 138 stolen bases in 13 seasons with the team.

Pedroia was named the MVP of the American League in 2008 and was recognized as an All-Star four times in his career.

Now, fans will have to wait and see if Pedroia is able to make a miraculous return to the field after he spends some time away from the game and rehabbing his injury.

Boston Red Sox’ pitcher Chris Sale is back on the disabled list due to issues with his shoulder. The Red Sox placed Sale on the disabled list earlier this month due to “mild shoulder inflammation,” but the issue seemed like it was taken care of. Still, after one healthy start against the Baltimore Orioles Sunday, the 29-year-old All-Star still has problems with his shoulder.

It’s definitely less than it was last time,” – Sale told reporters prior to the game against Tampa Bay. “It didn’t bounce back, wasn’t really responding the way we wanted it to. Given kind of where we are, it was kind of right call to give it some rest and stay on top of it. You don’t want to be playing catch-up during a time like this.

Boston Red Sox didn’t want to take any chances with Chris Sale, preferring to have him in full health for what they hope will be a long postseason run.

I think it’s a smart move,” – said Red Sox’ manager Alex Coar. “This guy is very important to what we’re trying to accomplish, and if he needs to skip one, two, three [starts], whatever, we’re willing to do that. He’ll be back. Like he said, he feels better than the last time we put him on the DL, so he’ll get his rest, he’ll go through treatment, and we’ll go from there.

In order to fill Sale’s spot on the roster, the team recalled Brandon Workman from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Chris Sale is 12-4 with 1.97 ERA in 23 appearances this season. He is considered to be the leading favorite for Cy Young Award this year, due to the fact that he never got one despite excelling during his time in MLB.

Sale has seven consecutive MLB All-Star and led the American League in strikeouts two times. He is currently MLB’s career leader in strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.12) while reaching becoming the fastest pitcher to record 1,500 strikeouts.

During his time with the Boston Red Sox, left fielder Ted Williams went by many names. The Splendid Splinter. Teddy Ballgame. The Greatest Hitter Who Ever Lived. While these monikers were very apropos to his astonishing playing ability, one name that will truly define this San Diego native is hero.

Joining The Battle

Things were going smoothly during his first few years with the franchise. His rookie season was praised by sports journalists, and his .406 batting average in the 1941 season is still one of the highest in MLB history. When World War II began in 1942, Williams was drafted into Class 1-A, which is for those ready to take on military services. The baseball star’s family were no strangers to war; his uncle Daniel Venzor was killed in battle during World War I.

In The Navy

State Library and Archives of Florida

Due to his mother’s dependency on him, he fought to have his status dropped to Class 3-A, which removed him from service. “My conscience is clear. I have as much right to be exempted as anyone else. I have my mother to support,” stated the star in a press release. As expected, he gained a plethora of negative attention from those around him. He did, however, promise to make it up to his country. “When the season is over, I’ll get into the Navy as fast as I can.”

One day after hitting his 100th home run on May 21, 1942, Williams enlisted into the Navy Reserve, which earned him even more disdain from teammates. “I’m tickled to death and I’m hoping I’ll get into the air quick to start some slugging against the Axis,” he told reporters shortly after his life-altering decision.

Along with teammate John Pesky, Williams spent six months in training before becoming a Naval Aviator. Missing three years of baseball didn’t faze him much. He was busy tightening up his craft as a pilot. In 1946, he returned to the field to deliver five phenomenal seasons worth of performances before being called back into service in the Korean War.

Williams was partnered with a young John Glenn, who went on to become the first astronaut to orbit the Earth. “Ted flew as my wingman on about half the missions he flew in Korea,” Glenn recalled. During the war, Williams was a part of 39 missions in total, which resulted in him losing hearing. Glenn remembers the young man almost losing his life multiple times. “Once, he was on fire and had to belly land the plane back in,” Glenn remembered. “He slid it in on the belly. It came up the runway about 1,500 feet before he was able to jump out and run off the wingtip.”

A Great American Hero

In the end, Williams, resigned from service with a multitude of medals, including the United Nations Service Medal. When it comes to his time in the military, he stated, “The three years that I lost – hell, there were nine billion guys who contributed a lot more than I did.” Glenn, however, saw his contribution in a different light. “Much as I appreciate baseball, Ted to me will always be a Marine fighter pilot,” he said.

It may sometimes feel like you’re wasting your time supporting a sports team that hasn’t brought home the silverware in a long while but the truth is, sometimes the underdog turns things around and grabs the glory. Here are 5 times that defied all odds and did just that.

Butler Bulldogs (2010–2011) Basketball Gods

The Butler Bulldogs defied the odds not once, but twice, when they made the championship game of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament in back-to-back seasons. Most attribute it to the clever touches of Head Coach Brad Stevens and his star player, Gordon Hayward.

Sadly, they didn’t quite get the fairy tale ending and lost both finals—but you can’t deny the qualities that took a mid-major school from nowhere to somewhere, twice.

New York Giants (2007) A Super Superbowl

The Patriots owned the decade and it seemed that in 2007 they were going to make their permanent mark on the record books. They were set to be the first ever team to make 16 games undefeated in one season.

They were not. The New York Giants may have been unfancied by the bookies as they headed into the Super Bowl that year, but they played like they didn’t know it. Eli Manning danced across the line a minute from the end, giving the Giants the game and crushing the Patriots’ dreams of immortality in the record books.

Boston Red Sox (2004) Finally The Bride And Not The Bridesmaid

The Boston Red Sox have often been contenders for the playoffs, but when they finally hit the America League Championship Series playoffs in 2004, it looked like they were going home empty handed and fast.

They lost the first 3 games of the series of seven. The New York Yankees appeared to be a shoe in for the series. Then the Red Sox hit back. They became the only team in history to drop their first three games and win a seven game series. Then they went on to take the World Series from the St. Louis Cardinals—an amazing comeback of epic proportions.

Leicester City (2016) Premier League Minnows Get Mighty

Leicester City’s British Premiership win in 2016 was totally unprecedented. Not only had the team won nothing of note for their entire 132-year history, but they were a cobbled-together low budget side that had nearly been relegated the year before.

Yet, they saw off the big money teams of Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur to land their first ever Premiership and become only the fifth team to do so in the league’s history. It seems unlikely that they will ever repeat this feat.

USA Men’s Hockey Team (1980) Cracking The Cold War

During the Cold War, the Olympics became a very serious business. What made the USA Men’s Hockey Team win so special in 1980 wasn’t the fact that they beat the Russian team 4–3. It was that the entire American squad was made up of real amateur players and college kids, while the Russian team was made of the usual Russian professional sportsmen pretending to be amateurs.

It was a truly thrilling achievement which may never be matched in sports history again.

Hernandez first played for the Dodgers from 2015 until 2020. He is fondly remembered by fans for his tying home run in Game 7 of the 2020 National League Championship Series, helping the Dodgers to win their first World Series title in over 30 years.

After a long and successful career at second base for the Boston Red Sox, it appears that team legend Dustin Pedroia might not ever be able to return to the baseball field.
