The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have replenished their depleted pass rush with veteran outside linebacker Randy Gregory. The Bucs announced that Gregory joined on a one-year deal.

Gregory started the 2023 season with the Denver Broncos before being traded to the San Francisco 49ers. He played 16 games combined, producing 3.5 sacks, 20 tackles, and 10 QB hits.

The Buccaneers found themselves with a hole in their pass rush after seeing Pro Bowler Shaq Barrett leave in free agency. Gregory is expected to step in for Barrett, while the Bucs could also address the position through the draft, where they hold the 26th overall pick.

After a successful college campaign with Nebraska, Randy Gregory entered the 2015 NFL Draft as a presumed first-round pick. However, reports about his problematic behavior came to light before the draft night, causing him to slip to the second round, where he was taken by the Dallas Cowboys.

Gregory would go on to spend seven years with the Cowboys organization, but only played 50 games due to a number of suspensions. He missed the 2017 and 2019 seasons completely while also being suspended for all but two games in 2016.

Gregory’s career stats include 22.0 sacks, 117 tackles, 69 QB hits, and 10 forced fumbles.

The Dallas Cowboys were so certain that defensive end Randy Gregory would return to the team in 2022 that they even made the announcement on social media. However, in a stunning turn of events for the franchise, Gregory opted to snub the Cowboys and instead sign with the Denver Broncos.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Legwold, Gregory didn’t walk away from Dallas because the Broncos offered a better deal. The terms were pretty much the same and included five years and $70 million. However, the Cowboys wanted to include “salary forfeiture language” in Gregory’s contract, which was something that the veteran wasn’t thrilled about.

Coming out of college, Randy Gregory was considered a first-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft and was even projected to crack the top 10 in some mock draft. However, a series of off-the-field issues caused his draft stocks to plummet and he ended up falling to the Cowboys in the second round.

Gregory had a slow start to his NFL career with injuries and suspensions for problematic off-the-field behavior limiting him to just 28 games in five years. However, the Nebraska product managed to bounce back in the past two seasons, playing 24 games and contributing with 9.5 sacks, 40 tackles, and six forced fumbles.

The Dallas Cowboys pass rush game was handed a tough blow on Wednesday. Defensive end Randy Gregory, who leads the team in sacks in 2021, injured his calf during practice and is set to miss “multiple weeks.”

Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed the news during a press conference on Thursday while adding that Gregory could land on the Injured Reserve list. In this case, the 28-year-old would have to miss at least three weeks before being eligible to return to the active roster.

Gregory was in the midst of a career year that saw him make 5 sacks, 12 QB hits, and 10 tackles. He also had two forced fumbles and established himself as a disruptive force on the Cowboys’ defense.

“I think he was probably one of our best players. You could make the argument probably one of clearly our best players on defense,” McCarthy said via ESPN.

According to McCarthy, Dallas will embrace the “next man up” approach and will look to make up for Gregory’s absence with the players they have on their roster.

“Right now I’m focused on the players that are here,” he added. “We made some adjustments once learning the news after practice yesterday. So we feel good about our plan and we’ll stay the course.”

Randy Gregory was the Cowboys’ second-round selection in the 2015 NFL Draft. He was mostly a backup in his first four years in the league but emerged as a starter in 2021 and was making the most of it before getting hurt. Gregory has 15.5 career sacks to go with 47 QB hits, 76 tackles, and seven forced fumbles.
