Dallas Cowboys’ outside linebacker Randy Gregory is one step closer to playing an NFL game once again. According to Dallas Morning News‘ Michael Gehlken, Gregory took part in Cowboys’ practice on Thursday, which is his first in 20 months.

Gregory previously missed the entire 2019 season, being suspended by the NFL for repeated violations of the league’s policies. He was conditionally reinstated last month but wasn’t allowed to practice with the first team until now.

Reportedly, Gregory should have his first game back in Week 7 against Washington Football Team. The 27-year-old Gregory’s most recent game was a Divisional Series game against LA Rams in January 2019.

“Just heard a lot about him from [executives Jerry and Stephen Jones], and so just excited for him for everything he has gone through to get to this point and prepare himself,” said Cowboys’ head coach Mike McCarthy when asked about Gregory. “I think everybody, to a man, is excited to see him take that first step.”

The Dallas Cowboys eagerly expect Randy Gregory’s return, considering they have been struggling on the defense throughout the first four games of the season. Cowboys allowed a combined 146 points in the past four weeks and 430.5 yards on average each game while failing to produce turnovers or get to the opposing quarterback.

Gregory, who was Dallas’ second-round pick in 2015, could definitely help in this department if he picks up where he left two years ago. He finished the 2018 season with 25 tackles, 6.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and impressive 15 QB hits.

According to the Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones, defensive end Randy Gregory is preparing to apply for reinstatement to the NFL. Gregory was suspended by the league for at least one year in January 2017 after he failed on multiple drug tests and skipped few of them. The 25-year-old will make his case to NFL, with Jerry Jones being hopeful about Gregory’s return to the field in 2018 season.

I’m not confident but I do see where his heart is,” – said Jones. “He’s one of the smartest people that have played this game. By documentation he is. So he’s smart. That’s a tremendous step. Of course, he’s had that same IQ since he’s had these issues. That’s the issues. This is definitely a medical issue. There’s no doubt in my mind (it’s) medical. That’s another campaign right there.

Randy Gregory played college football at Nebraska and made First-team All-Big Ten two consecutive years before declaring for 2015 NFL Draft. Although projected as a high first-round pick upon entering the draft, his stocks were severely hurt by the fact that he failed a drug test on marijuana at NFL Scouting Combine. He was selected late in the second round when Dallas Cowboys took him with the 60th overall pick.

After a disappointing 2015 season, in which he missed four games and failed to find his true form, Gregory was suspended for four games in 2016 for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. He then failed another test and was handed an additional 10 games suspension while being removed from the team’s roster. He made his return in Week 16 of 2016 season and recorded his first NFL sack in Week 17 against the Philadelphia Eagles. After he missed a scheduled drug test, NFL suspended him for 2016 playoffs and at least for one season.
