It seems like Los Angeles Lakers’ guard Rajon Rondo can’t catch a break this season. After undergoing surgery in November and missing out 17 games, the 32-year-old now had to have another one after tearing finger ligaments. Both operations were on his shooting hand.

According to the statement issued by the Lakers, Rondo suffered the injury during Christmas game against the Golden State Warriors and underwent surgery on Friday. It is expected that he will miss out four to five weeks.

Rajon Rondo’s injury came at a bad time for the Lakers, who will also be without their main start LeBron James for some time. He suffered a groin injury against the Warriors, and the team is expecting him to miss several games. The Thursday night’s game against the Sacramento Kings showed how troublesome Rondo’s and James’ absence really is since the Los Angeles ended up losing the game 117-116 with their young stars Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram failing to step up when the match was at the line.

When healthy, Rajon Rondo was a valuable member of the Los Angeles Lakers team this season. He played a total of 14 games, averaging 8.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 1.0 steals per game.

Just when Los Angeles Lakers started figuring things out, they face an unfortunate setback. Lakers’ veteran point guard Rajon Rondo broke his hand during Wednesday night’s 126-117 win over the Portland Trail Blazers and will reportedly be out of action for a few weeks.

Lakers’ head coach Luke Walton told reporters after the game that he believes Rondo suffered the injury in the fourth quarter when he went for a steal against Blazers center Jusuf Nurkic.

He hit his hand on the floor when he went to steal that ball,” – said Walton. “They [the medical staff] are getting all the details. I just know he will be out for a few weeks.

Rondo, on the other hand, didn’t want to give further info about his injury.

I’m not talking about it,” – he said.

According to the sources close to Lakers organization, Rondo will see a specialist on Thursday in order to determine whether he needs to undergo a surgery or not. The team expects the 32-year-old to return to court in three to five weeks.

Rajon Rondo joined Los Angeles Lakers on a one-year, $9 million deal in the summer, with the organization hoping that he would be able to provide mentorship to their talented point guard Lonzo Ball. Rondo played 11 games this season and currently averages 8.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 1.2 steals per game.

The things looked a little brighter for the New Orleans Pelicans. They have arguably the best frontcourt in the league and have just added a veteran point guard in Rajon Rondo who knows how to tie loose ends. Well, bad news came on Monday from the Pelicans’ coach Alvin Gentry. According to Gentry, Rondo could undergo a surgery in order to repair a sports hernia. The final verdict about this will come on Monday when Rondo is scheduled to visit a specialist in Philadelphia. Gentry said he doesn’t know how long Rondo will be off the court in case the surgery is needed.

Best I’ve been around in 30 years in the league as far as a guy who really takes young players under his wing and tries to teach them,” – Gentry said while discussing Rondo’s importance to the team. “He’s just a great leader to have on your team. If you want to have a mentor in this league, I would suggest him.”

Rajon Rondo was originally drafted by the Phoenix Suns in 2006 NBA draft (21st overall pick) but was immediately traded to the Boston Celtics. After a semi-successful rookie season in which he was a backup, Rondo emerged as a starting point guard for the Boston Celtics in 2008. He had a strong season in which he averaged 10.6 points, 5.1 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game. Playing alongside Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen, Rondo was particularly impressive in the playoffs, managing to win an NBA title. After 7 more years with the Celtics, Rondo was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in 2014. After his contract expired the following year, Rondo signed with the Sacramento Kings on a one year deal. In 2016, he joined the Chicago Bulls and formed a partnership with Dwyane Wade and Jimmy Butler. The Bulls entered the playoffs and were up against the first seeded Boston Celtics. In the game 2 of the series, Rondo suffered a broken thumb and didn’t play for the rest of the series. Missing Rondo, the Bulls lost 4 straight games, after being 2-0. After the rebuilding Bulls waived him, Rondo signed one-year, $3.3 million contract with the New Orleans Pelicans.
