Four-time US Open winner and number two seed Rafael Nadal suffered an early exit from the Grand Slam on Monday, losing 6-4 4-6 6-4 6-3 to American Frances Tiafoe in the Round of 16. “I felt like the world stopped. I couldn’t hear anything for a minute,” an emotional Tiafoe admitted following his victory.

In addition to the feat of defeating the all-time leading men’s singles Grand Slam winner in front of his home crowd, the 24-year-old also became the youngest American man to make it to the semi-finals since Andy Roddick in 2006. Intriguingly, Tiafoe’s win means that this is the first US Open without the top two seeded men making it to the quarterfinals since 2000.

For Tiafoe, the experience of defeating Nadal was surreal, especially with his parents Constant and Alphina watching from his guest box in the Arthur Ashe Stadium. “To see them experience me beat Rafa Nadal — they’ve seen me have big wins, but to beat those Mount Rushmore guys? For them, I can’t imagine what was going through their heads. I mean, they’re going to remember today for the rest of their lives,” Tiafoe stated.

20-time grand slam winner Rafael Nadal has announced that he will be ending his ATP season early due to an injury on his left foot that has been plaguing him for the last year. As a result, he will not be competing in the US Open, which is set to begin later this month.

The ATP number 4 suffered an early exit from the ATP 250 event in Washington D.C. earlier this month, losing 4-6, 6-1, and 4-6 to South Africa’s Lloyd Harris in their round of 16 clash. Last week, the Spaniard pulled out of the Masters 1000 event in Toronto due to his persisting injury.

Nadal publicly announced his withdrawal from the remainder of the 2021 season via Twitter, explaining: “Honestly, I have been suffering much more than I should with my foot for a year and I need to take some time … to find a solution to this problem or at least improve it in order to continue to have options for the next few years.”

Nadal is not the only fan favorite that will be missed at the US Open this year. 20-time grand slam champion Roger Federer also had to pull out of the event, citing a knee surgery that will keep him out of tennis for at least a few months.

Rafael Nadal won’t defend his US Open title in 2020. Nadal, who is currently the no. 2 men’s tennis player in the world, confirmed on social media that he will skip this year’s tournament due to the coronavirus pandemic concerns.

“After many thoughts, I have decided not to play this year’s US Open,” Nadal wrote on Twitter. “The situation is very complicated worldwide, the COVID-19 cases are increasing, it looks like we still don’t have control of it.”

The 34-year-old Spaniard further explained his decision in a series of tweets.

Rafael Nadal claimed the US Open title last year after beating Daniil Medvedev in a marathon 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4 match that lasted almost five hours. This was Nadal’s fourth US Open career win, while he also increased his Grand Slam tally to 19. The all-time record is currently held by Roger Federer, who has 20 Grand Slams.

Nadal’s announcement comes days after several other high-profile names dropped out of the tournament including No.1 women’s tennis player in the world Ashleigh Barty and her fellow Australian Nick Kyrgios.

The 2020 US Open is scheduled to take place between August 31st and September 13th. It will be the first major tennis event since the coronavirus pandemic outbreak in March.

Spaniard Rafael Nadal is ready to make his return to tennis after missing the last two months due to a knee injury. Nadal is set to make an appearance at Paris Masters next week and will try to win this tournament for the first time in his career. According to organizers, the 31-year-old arrived in Paris on Friday.

Rafael Nadal will have a bye in the first round at Paris Masters and will face either Fernando Verdasco or Jeremy Chardy in the second round. Further down the road, Nadal could face defending 2017 Paris Masters winner Jack Sock in the third round and then meet Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinals. Good thing for him, however, is that both Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are on the other side of the bracket, and could only meet them in the finals.

Rafael Nadal played his last tournament in September when he reached the semifinals of US Open and was the favorite to win the title. In the semi-final match against Juan Martin del Potro, however, he lost the two opening sets and then was forced to quit the game due to a knee injury. Nadal has been struggling with knee issues for several years now and was forced to retire from multiple tournaments in the past because of this problem.

Rafael Nadal will enter the Paris Masters as the No.1 ranked tennis player in the world, but he may not hold the position for too long. Novak Djokovic is only 215 points behind him and has an advantage of being record four times winner of the tournament.
