Vancouver Canucks announced that they have signed prospect Quinn Hughes to a three-year entry-level contract. The 19-year-old talented defenseman, who was the seventh overall pick in 2018 NHL Draft, joined the team on Tuesday after recently wrapping up his sophomore season with the University of Michigan.

“Quinn is an exceptional skater, strong on the puck and plays with creativity,” – said Canucks general manager Jim Benning in a statement. “We’re excited for Quinn to join our team and continue to grow his game as a member of the Vancouver Canucks.”

After a successful freshman year with Wolverines, in which he helped the team to reach Frozen Four, Hughes wanted to come back for another season and attempt to win NCAA championship opposed to playing with Canucks. Things didn’t turn out as planned since Michigan was eliminated from the Big 10 tournament on Sunday, but he still had an excellent 2018-19.

Hughes managed to contribute with 33 points in 32 games in the past season, bringing up his college totals to 62 points in 69 games.

Besides successfully playing at the college level, Quinn Hughes also represented the United States on several IIHF world championships. At youth level, he managed to win the gold medal at World U18 Championships while also taking part in winning the bronze at World Championships in 2018 at a senior level where he was the team’s youngest player.
