Eight Premier League players could face a ban from appearing in this weekend’s fixtures after the Brazil FA chose to invoke a FIFA rule stating that players could be prevented from representing their clubs should those clubs refuse to release them for international duty. This comes days after Brazilian health authorities stormed the pitch during the midweek clash between Brazil and Argentina, bringing a premature end to the game.

Manchester City’s first-choice goalkeeper Ederson is one of the eight players included on the list. Because backup keeper Zack Steffen is also unavailable due to testing positive for COVID-19, 36-year-old veteran Scott Carson is likely to start the game, marking his first Premier League appearance since 2011.

Joining Ederson on the list is Manchester United’s Fred and Chelsea’s Thiago Silva, both of whom face the possibility of missing their next Champions League clashes. Liverpool has three players featured on the list, namely goalkeeper Alisson alongside Roberto Firmino and Fabinho, all of whom risk missing the club’s next EPL fixture.

One player who avoided the Brazilian FA’s list is Everton forward Richarlison. This is because the player featured for Brazil during the nation’s Gold Medal triumph at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics; an event during which there were no regulations compelling the player to appear.

After Bundesliga resumed its season in May, other top soccer leagues in Europe are following its footsteps. England’s Premier League, Spain’s La Liga, and Italy’s Seria A all announced that they are returning in June after they previously suspended their seasons due to coronavirus pandemic.

The Premier League announced on Thursday that the 2019/20 season will resume on June 17th with two matches: Aston Villa vs. Sheffield United and Manchester City vs. Arsenal. After these two games, the rest of the teams will also have their matches between 19th and 21st June.

On Friday, Seria A confirmed that the Italian clubs will also resume the 2019/20 season, with the first games being scheduled for June 20th. It is expected that teams play every three days in order to finish out the season as quickly as possible.

Newcastle United defender Danny Rose made strong and critical declarations about potential plans that would see the Premier League return to action this summer after the coronavirus pandemic forced the postponement of the season beginning in mid-March.

Rose went to Instagram Live and responded to questions from his followers about the league’s desire to resume in June. He criticized the idea of soccer returning while the deaths and infections from the COVID-19 virus continue in the United Kingdom.

The England international classified the idea of discussing a return to football at this point as a “joke” in an expletive-filled rant. According to Rose, society’s priority at this point shouldn’t be the Premier League, but rather keeping all of its citizens healthy and safe.

As Rose put it, “I’m sad that people are getting sick and being affected. Football should be the last of things that need to be sorted.”

The United Kingdom has been the hardest-hit country in Europe by the COVID-19 pandemic with over 220,000 cases and 32,000 deaths due to the virus.

The Premier League has yet to detail its plan for a return to the competition, but speculation exists that the league plans to get things going again in early June.
