The Pittsburgh Steelers have made the first major move in their attempts to find a new starter under center after the retirement of their longtime quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. According to multiple reports, the Steelers have signed free-agent QB Mitchell Trubisky to a two-year deal on Monday.

Trubisky’s contract is reportedly worth $14.25 million, but the former No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft could earn up to $27 million based on incentives.

The Steelers have yet to make the signing official, although the player himself confirmed the deal in a chat with ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

“This was the best opportunity for me and my family … the best way to get back on the field and try to win games … You’ve got to go out and earn it,” said Trubisky, who will compete with 2018’s third-round QB Mason Rudolph for the starting job in Pittsburgh.

Mitchell Trubisky was supposed to be the Chicago Bears’ QB of the future and certainly played the part at one point with a Pro Bowl appearance in 2018. However, things went south after that for both the Bears and Trubinsky, prompting the franchise to let the North Carolina walk in free agency last offseason.

Trubisky opted not to pursue a starting job elsewhere and instead signed on to back Josh Allen in Buffalo. This turned out to be a good move as one year in Buffalo raised the 27-year-old’s stocks despite his limited time on the field. Several teams were reportedly interested in his services in recent weeks, including the Giants, but he ended up seeing the Steelers as his fastest track to a starting job.

Since entering the NFL, Trubisky has made 50 starts and is 29-21 as a starter in the league. His stats include 64.1 pass completion, 10,652 passing yards, 64 touchdowns, and 38 interceptions.

In a crucial AFC North matchup at Heinz Field, the Ravens got the best of the Steelers and took the division lead. Justin Tucker kicked the game winning field goal in overtime in a back and forth, hard-hitting rivalry game.

For all the ups and downs in the game, the ugly hit on Mason Rudolph in the 3rd quarter is what stands out the most. On a third-and-11 and down 17-13, Rudolph scrambled to his left and got a pass off to James Washington while 2 Ravens defensemen gave chase from both sides. Earl Thomas then hit him full force on the chin, knocking Rudolph unconscious, and he had to be helped off the field and taken to a local hospital.

Although the pass was completed, and 15 yards was tacked on for the penalty, the Steelers would gladly take back that play as it now leaves them without Roethlisberger and backup QB Rudolph. Rookie undrafted free agent Delvin Hodges then took over and did a good job controlling the rest of the game, but the hit leaves Pittsburgh with a lot of questions at the QB position.

With Pittsburgh up 23-20, Justin Tucker kicked a game tying 48-yard field goal with 10 seconds left, sending the game into overtime. After Tomlin curiously opted to kickoff in OT, the Steelers took possession after a 3 and out by the Ravens. JuJu Smith-Schuster then fumbled the ball on a reception and the Ravens got great field position setting up the game winning field goal by the incredibly consistent Tucker.

Pittsburgh Steelers recently caught football world off guard when they selected Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph with the 76th overall pick in 2018 NFL Draft. That immediately raised questions about the future of their starting QB Ben Roethlisberger, and whether the organization intends to make Rudolph his heir.

Roethlisberger doesn’t have any problems with that, but doesn’t see it happening anytime soon since he plans on playing for “three to five more years.”

Well, that’s fine. He can do that,” – Roethlisberger told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Tuesday when speaking about the possibility that Rudolph will take over as the Steelers starting quarterback. “But I plan on playing for three to five more years, depending on how the line goes and staying healthy if I can stay healthy.

If he’s going to be their guy, that’s great, but in my perfect world it’s not going to be for a while.” – he added.

According to the Steelers, the organization didn’t intend to draft a quarterback at all but couldn’t pass on the opportunity to take Mason Rudolph, believing he isn’t any worse than the QBs taken in the first round. Rudolph ended his senior season at Oklahoma State passing for 4,553 yards and 35 touchdowns.

If we are to believe the numbers, there are no reasons for the Steelers to make the quarterback transition anytime soon. Ben Roethlisberger ended 2017 with 4,251 passing yards, his fifth NFL season where he passed for more than 4,000 yards. The 36-year-old completed 360 out of 561 passes and had 28 touchdowns alongside 14 interceptions. In the AFC Divisional Round matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Roethlisberger faced the league’s top passing defense and still ended up with 469 passing yards and five touchdowns. Despite his monster game, Pittsburgh Steelers were eliminated, losing the game 42–45.
