The Houston Texans continued to clean the house on Tuesday by deciding to part ways with Pro Bowl running back Phillip Lindsay. The move comes after the team already moved from several veterans earlier in the season, including outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus and kick returner Andre Robert.

Lindsay joined the Texans in free agency ahead of the 2021 season, inking a one-year, $3.25 million deal with the franchise. He was supposed to have a prominent role on the offense but ended up sliding down the depth chart as the season progressed—the 27-year-old finishes his stint in Houston with just 130 yards and a touchdown.

Lindsay was placed on waivers, and other teams have an opportunity to claim him and take on his contract for the remainder of the season. However, the more likely scenario is that he will clear waivers and land somewhere else as a free agent.

The Texans will now move forward with veterans David Johnson and Rex Burkhead as their primary backs. The team also has Royce Freeman, who arrived to Houston after spending the first part of the season with the Carolina Panthers, as an option on the position.

Phillip Lindsay entered the league in 2018, signing a deal with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent. He quickly emerged as the franchise’s featured back and produced back-to-back 1,000+ rushing yards and 7+ touchdowns seasons that also included one Pro Bowl nod.

2020, however, saw Lindsay experiencing a decline in production due to a toe injury. He finished the year with 502 yards on the ground and just one TD, prompting the Broncos to let him walk in free agency.

The injuries keep on piling up for Denver Broncos. The latest two came over the weekend when the organization learned that they will have to play multiple weeks without starters quarterback Drew Locks and running back Philip Lindsay due to injuries.

Lock was injured in the first quarter of the 26-21 loss to Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night. The 23-year-old QB landed awkwardly on his shoulder after being sacked by Steelers’ Bud Dupree and had to leave the contest.

“We’ll probably do an MRI on it,” said Lock after the game.”And yes, because it’s my throwing arm, there’s a little bit more caution in there.”

While Broncos didn’t give much detail about their signal caller’s injury, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Lock sprained his AC and will have to sit out from two to six weeks depending on the extent of the injury.

Lindsay, on the other hand, has been dealing with a toe sprain for the past several days and was forced to miss the game against the Steelers. The 26-year-old RB is reportedly facing a two to four weeks break, which means the earliest he could return is the Week 4 game against New York Jets.

The injuries of Lock and Lindsay represent another tough blow for Denver, who is losing key players right and left each week. Denver previously saw All-Pro linebacker Von Miller go down with season-ending ankle surgery, while Pro Bowl wideout Courtland Sutton is also dealing with a serious shoulder injury.
