Philip Rivers once played through a torn ACL, so something like a toe injury won’t keep him on the sidelines. Even if he needs surgery to fix it.

Rivers injured his toe in a Week 11 overtime win over the Green Bay Packers, and has been experiencing discomfort because of it for the past two weeks.

The subsequent medical tests showed that the injury is severe enough to require a procedure, but the 39-year-old star doesn’t plan to go down that route before the season ends.

“I’m working each week trying to find a way to be out there. I don’t feel any limitations,” Rivers told reporters on Sunday.

The reason why Philip Rivers doesn’t want to deal with the injury right now is because Indianapolis is currently positioned to make a deep playoff run in 2020.

The Colts are currently tied with the Tennessee Titans at 8-4 in the AFC South and will most likely make the postseason, either by winning the division or by snatching one of the wild card spots.

Additionally, Rivers doesn’t want to jeopardize his impressive streak of consecutive regular season starts. Since Week 1 of the 2006 NFL season, he has made 235 consecutive starts, and is only trailing Brett Favre (297) among QBs in the league’s history.

Rivers has enjoyed a solid season in his first year with Colts, completing 68.1 percent of his passes while throwing for 3,263 yards, 18 touchdowns, and nine interceptions through the first 12 games.

It was a great night on Thursday for Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Philip Rivers as he not only led his team to an important 34-17 win over divisional rivals Tennessee Titans but also certified his place in NFL history.

Rivers finished the game with 308 yards, which took his career total to 61,666 passing yards and pushed him on the fifth place of NFL’s All-Time passing list. The 38-year-old player jumped over Hall of Famer Dan Marino with Brett Favre (71,838), Peyton Manning (71,940), Tom Brady (76,969), and Drew Brees (79,536) sitting in front of him.

“Those guys up there on that list, I don’t know that I’m in their category, and that’s okay, but Dan Marino was on my wall,” said Rivers about the achievement. “He was a poster on my wall as a young boy in Decatur and Athens, Alabama, so it’s special.”

2020 is proving to be an achievement-filled season for Rivers considering that he previously jumped over Marino on the all-time completions list while becoming just the sixth player in the history of the league to throw more than 400 touchdown passes.

Rivers threw just one TD pass on Thursday, but that was enough for his Colts to grab a victory since running back Nyheim Hines was in the mood and delivered two additional scores. Indianapolis are now sitting at the top of the AFC South with a 6-3 record and tiebreaker over Tennessee.

It is safe to say that Indianapolis Colts’ veteran quarterback Philip Rivers experienced some rough patches at the start of the 2020 NFL season. Rivers struggled with turnovers so far, and currently has more interceptions (five) than touchdowns (four) in the first five weeks. Still, his job seems safe at the moment.

Colts’ head coach Frank Reich publicly supported Rivers on Monday and told the media that he doesn’t consider making a switch at the position.

“No,” said Reich when asked whether he’s thinking about promoting backup Jacoby Brissett to the No.1 QB. “Philip is our quarterback.”

Rivers especially had a tough outing in Sunday’s loss to Cleveland Browns, when he produced nine points for the opposing team. The 38-year-old first threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown in the second half and then gave up an intentional grounding in the endzone for a safety.

Despite all of this, Reich intends to stick with his Week 1 starter.

“My trust at the end of the day is that this guy is a Hall of Fame quarterback,” he added. “I have the utmost belief in him, and our team has the utmost belief in him, and you’re gonna have to live with some mistakes. We truly believe the good will far outweigh the bad.”

Despite Philip Rivers’ shaky play, Colts are 3-2 to start the season and don’t need to panic right now. However, if Rivers continues to play badly and Indianapolis starts losing, the chatter of the QB switch will become louder.

It appears that the partnership between veteran quarterback Philip Rivers and Indianapolis Colts might extend beyond the 2020 NFL season. At least that’s what the team’s head coach Frank Reich believes.

Rivers swapped Los Angeles Chargers for Colts this offseason, inking a one-year, $25-million deal. Despite the short-term deal, however, Reich thinks the 38-year-old signal-caller will sticking with the organization for “multiple years.”

“The spirit of [negotiations] was, we’re in this together and as long as Philip wants to play, wants to be here,” Reich told reporters in a conference call on Monday. “It’s the NFL — we know he has to prove it. We have to prove it as a team to keep him wanting to play. I can just tell you from the previous relationship [with the Chargers], I really believe it’s Philip’s intent to play multiple years. I personally believe he’s more than capable of multiple years.”

Rivers had a disappointing year in 2019 in which he threw 20 interceptions and led the Chargers to 5-11 record. Following the end of the season, Chargers decided not to renew his contract and instead drafted Oregon’s Justin Herbert to be their QB of the future.

The Colts, on the other hand, believe that the past season was an outlier and that Rivers can still compete on a high level for a team that is constructed to win now. They also perceive him as a good fit for their system, considering that Rivers and Reich previously worked together between 2013 and 2015 in LA.

It remains unclear whether Philip Rivers has the same plans as Colts. Rivers admitted that he already considered retirement after the past season and has already accepted a head coaching position at St. Michael Catholic High School when he leaves NFL.

Whether Rivers remains in NFL past 2020 will most likely depend on the team’s success this season. If he plays good and Colts make a deep playoff run, its likely that he will be back. If not, you can expect his retirement announcement.

It turns out that veteran quarterback Phillip Rivers was close to making retirement plans before Indianapolis Colts came calling. Speaking with reporters over the weekend, Rivers admitted he was ready to call it quits if no offers came his way this offseason.

Rivers spent the first 16 years of his career with the Los Angeles Chargers, but the two sides agreed to go their separate ways after the 2019 season wrapped up. This cleared the way for Rivers to become a free agent for the first time in his career, but the 39-year-old knew he might not get the opportunity he was looking for.

“I think really where we settled in is I still love to play, certainly not coming off my best year [in 2019], but I know I still can play at a high level,” said Rivers. “It was one of those deals where we said if there’s nothing else out there then that’ll be our answer. I don’t want to just try to hang on to play.”

Rivers didn’t have to wait too much, as Colts came through with a $25 million offer.

“I was still excited about playing and hoping to get another opportunity to continue my career and certainly thankful that it’s going to be with the Colts.” he added.

Philip Rivers had a storied career with the Chargers, despite failing to get a team to a Super Bowl. Besides earning eight Pro Bowl nods, Rivers set a number of franchise records along the way, including those for games played (227), wins (123), and passing touchdowns (397).

The Philip Rivers era at Los Angele Chargers if officially over. The team and Rivers released a joint statement on Monday in which they announced that the 38-year-old signal-caller’s time with the organization has come to an end.

Rivers will enter the free agency and will be able to sign with a team of his liking, as his contract with the Chargers expires in March.

“After stepping back a bit from last season, we reconnected with Philip and his representatives to look at how 2019 played out, assess our future goals, evaluate the current state of the roster and see if there was a path forward that made sense for both parties,” said general manager Tom Telesco. “As we talked through various scenarios, it became apparent that it would be best for Philip and the Chargers to turn the page on what has truly been a remarkable run.”

Talking about the timing of the statement, Telesco said this enables both parties “to put themselves in the best position” ahead of the next season.

Rivers, who was the fourth overall pick in 2004, landed with the Chargers after the trade with New York Giants shortly after the draft. Since then, he led the team to six postseason appearances while making eight Pro Bowl appearances. He passed for 59,271 yards and 397 touchdowns over the past 16 years while setting numerous franchise records.

Rivers’ 224 consecutive starts are also second-most by a quarterback in the NFL history.

“I never took for granted the opportunity to lead this team out onto the field for 235 games,” said Rivers. “We had a lot of great moments, beginning in San Diego and then finishing in L.A. I wish my teammates and coaches nothing but the best moving forward. “

Following Philip Rivers’ exit, Chargers will now probably turn to backup Tyrod Taylor unless they can land some of the other big-name free agent QBs like Tom Brady or Teddy Bridgewater. There is also a possibility of them drafting a QB in the upcoming draft.

Rivers, on the other hand, will probably look to land with a franchise that has a talented squad, but struggles with the quarterback position. The teams that come to mind are Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts.
