Many Philadelphia Flyers fans were not pleased with how their team approached the recent NHL trade deadline, and it turns out they weren’t the only ones. The franchise’s ownership apparently felt the same and decided to move on from the man who was responsible for that.

On Friday, the Flyers announced they had fired their general manager and president of hockey operations, Chuck Fletcher. They also confirmed that Daniel Brière, who was the Special Assistant to General Manager, will take over on an interim basis.

The biggest criticism of Fletcher has been his lack of activity during the NHL trade deadline. The Flyers wanted to move several veteran players, most of them on expiring contracts, but Fletcher failed to get any proposed deals over the line. Considering Philly is in rebuild mode, this was a missed opportunity to add more draft assets for players that were already on the exit door.

Fletcher took over as the Philadelphia Flyers’ general manager in 2018, and the team has made only one playoff appearance since then. They have been particularly bad this season, winning only 24 games and sitting second to last in Metropolitan Division.

“Flyers fans deserve a better team than what they’ve seen on the ice over the past few seasons and a clear plan to return this team to Stanley Cup contention,” said Flyers governor Dave Scott in a statement. “We know that this will be a multi-year process, and we are committed to doing it right, because we want to put this franchise on a path toward winning the Stanley Cup, period.”

After successfully undergoing treatment for Ewing’s sarcoma last month, the Philadelphia Flyers’ forward Oskar Lindblom is ready to get back to action.

Lindblom recently told Swedish media outlet Gefle Dagblad that he is looking to rejoin the team in Toronto this week and aims to help his team in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

“I’m going to Toronto on Friday and join the rest of the team,” said Lindblom. “We will see how it goes. I feel that my conditioning is getting better and better each day. We are in the playoffs and right now we are playing games to determine our seed.”

Having Lindblom in the squad would provide a significant boost for Flyers, as he was one of the team’s top performers before the unfortunate diagnosis. The 23-year-old forward had a team-high 11 goals alongside seven assists throughout the first 30 games he played in 2019/20.

The Flyers, who finished second in the Metropolitan Division, are currently engaged in the Eastern Conference round-robin with Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Washington Capitals to determine the seeding for the playoffs. They defeated Bruins 4-1 in the first game of the NHL restart on Sunday.

Oskar Lindblom made his NHL debut with Philly in 2017 and has since played 141 NHL games in which he contributed with 38 goals and 49 assists for a total of 87 points. Lindblom recently inked a three-year, $9 million contract that will keep him with the Flyers until 2023.
