Philadelphia Union cruised to a 7-0 win over D.C. United on Friday night to show once again that their form in 2022 isn’t a fluke. The win tied the MLS record for the biggest win margin in the history of the league.

Midfielder Alejandro Bedoya was first on the scoreboard in the 9th minute, followed by two goals from forward Julian Carranza in the 22nd and 25th minute. Carranza’s first goal was particular beauty as he got the ball into the net with an overhead kick.

D.C. United didn’t even have the time to process everything that happened, and they already had two more balls in their net by the end of the half. Bedoya added his second goal in the 36th minute, while Mikkel Uhre scored in added time.

The second half saw more of the same. Uhre scored again in the 59th minute, while Carranza completed a hat-trick 13 minutes later.

Besides the goal-scoring trio, left-back Kai Wagner, midfielder Daniel Gazdag, and goalie Andre Blake also made a significant contribution to the big win. Wagner finished the night with three assists, Gazdag had two, while Blake kept his goal intact with three saves.

The win allowed Union to keep their top spot in the Western Conference with a one-point advantage over New York Red Bulls on the second spot.

Philadelphia Unions’ starlet Brenden Aaronson is heading to Europe. The 19-year-old USMNT midfielder agreed to join the Austrian side FC Red Bull Salzburg and will make a move following the end of the 2020 MLS season.

The transfer was speculated for some time now, but the holdup was in the fee that Union asked for their most-prized player. Salzburg eventually agreed to pay $6 million right away and $3 million based on incentives. With this, Aaronson broke the record as the most-expensive United States-based homegrown player in MLS history.

Reportedly, Union will also be entitled to 10 percent of any future move that Aaronson makes.

At Salzburg, Aaronson will be welcomed by fellow American Jesse Marsch, who serves as the club’s manager since 2019.

“I am looking forward to starting the next chapter of my career,” said Aaronson after the deal was made official. “As a young player I focus on growing my ability, and I have seen how Salzburg has developed so many incredible talents. The way they play football really suits my own style.”

Brenden Aaronson came through Union’s youth academy, joining the organization at 11 years old. He signed a homegrown contract with Philly in 2018 but waited for an additional year to make his debut in MLS.

Since then, Aaronson played 51 games as a pro and contributed with seven goals and five assists in the process. He also earned a call-up to the United States men’s national team and has one appearance to his name so far.

Portland Timbers is the first team to advance to the MLS is Back Tournament Finals. Timbers secure their spot by beating Philadelphia Union 1-2 on Wednesday night.

Despite Philly being the slight favorite entering the game, the pressure seemed too much for the young Union squad. On the other hand, the experienced Portland team held their ground and looked like a better team despite sacrificing possession for the majority of the game.

Timbers opened the scoring early on thanks to forward Jeremy Ebobisse, who converted a beautiful cross by Diego Valeri in the 13th minute.

Portland then increased their league in 70th minute via veteran Sebastian Blanco, who scored after a header after a corner deflection.

Union had chances of their own and was close to equalize late in the first half via a penalty kick. Unfortunately for Philly, Sergio Santos sent the ball over the crossbar. Andrew Wooten did manage to score in 85th minute to give an impression of a thrilling finish, but that was about it.

Timbers now await the winner of the second semifinals matchup between Orlando City and Minnesota United. MLS is Back Finals are scheduled for August 11th.

Brooklyn Nets’ superstar Kevin Durant recently decided to venture into soccer. According to Sports Business Daily, Durant purchased a stake in MLS side Philadelphia Union, becoming the team’s minority owner.

While details of the deal still remain under wraps, Durant’s stake in Union’s ownership structure is between 1% and 5%.

Durant has tried to invest in a soccer team for some time now and has made two previous attempts to get a stake in his hometown club D.C. United. The 31-year-old failed in his efforts but remained interested in the MLS market and didn’t think much after the opportunity with Philly presented itself.

Philadelphia Union started playing Major League Soccer as an expansion team in 2010. The club hasn’t seen much success on the field so far, but it has a growing fan base and might prove to be a sound investment in years to come.

Surprisingly, Kevin Durant isn’t the first NBA star to pursue business opportunities in soccer. Houston Rockets’ star James Harden is part of an ownership group that took over Houston Dynamo and owns a small piece of the club. LeBron James branched into soccer investments a long time ago, having purchased a 2% stake in Premier League giants, Liverpool, in 2011.

Philadelphia Union is making sure it has the right leadership for the 2020 MLS season and beyond. The team announced on Thursday that they signed captain Alejandro Bedoya to a two-year contract extension.

This new deal will keep Bedoya with the franchise through at least 2021. The team also holds an option to prolong the veteran midfielder’s stay in Philadelphia for 2022.

Bedoya played 32 games last season and contributed four goals with four assists to help Union reach the postseason for the fourth time in the franchise’s history. In the playoffs, he guided the team to its first playoff win.

“[Alejandro] has exceeded expectations we set for him as a leader on the pitch, in the locker room, and throughout the community,” said Union sporting director Ernst Tanner in a statement. “It was very important for us to ensure the captain that led us to our first playoff win remains at our club to push us forward and set an example for our young core.”

Alejandro Bedoya joined Philadelphia Union in 2016 and has since become an integral part of the team’s starting 11. In total, he played 103 games in MLS with Union, scoring 10 goals and handing out 14 assists.

Prior to his arrival to MLS, Bedoya played for several clubs in Sweden and had a successful three-year stint with Ligue 1 side Nantes. He also has 66 appearances for  USMNT between 2011 and 2016.

Philadelphia Union is ready to make a big splash this MLS offseason, having engaged in negotiations with Mexico international midfielder Marco Fabian from German club Eintracht Frankfurt. After ESPN‘s Taylor Twellman reported the news on Tuesday, Union’s sporting director Ernst Tanner confirmed this a day later.

“It is true, the rumor about Marco Fabian that we are in touch with him and in negotiations, but we can’t say more at the moment,” – said Tanner on Wednesday. “We will come out when we have more news with that.”

While he was an important part of Frankfurt’s rotation in the previous years, Marco Fabian played just three appearances this season struggling with injuries. He decided to find another club where he could get regular minutes and was considering China and the United Arab Emirates before starting to lean towards the opportunity to come to MLS.

Philadelphia Union aggressively entered the offseason, hoping to make a step forward after reaching U.S. Cup finals and MLS Cup knockout round in 2018. Besides negotiating a deal for Fabian, Union is also working on a number of other deals and has recently managed to sign German fullback Kai Wagner from Wurzburger.
