The three most prominent golf tours—the PGA Tour, the LIV Golf, and the DP World Tour—made an announcement on Tuesday that they are merging in a move that sent shockwaves throughout the world of golf.

Announcing the merger, PGA Tour called it a “landmark agreement to unify men’s professional golf”.

The PGA Tour and the DP World Tour were previously engaged in a widely publicized legal battle with LIV Golf after the Saudi Arabia-backed tour plucked away some of the best golf players with lucrative contracts. The merger will now bring to an end all the legal proceedings and allow LIV Golf members to become part of the PGA Tour and DP World Tour again.

According to PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, the decision was made with the goal to improve golf as a sport and take it to another level.

“There’s been a lot of tension in our sport over the last couple of years,” Monahan said in a chat with CNBC. “What we’re talking about today is coming together to unify the game of golf and to do so under one umbrella.”

The details of the merger are still being worked out, but the tours said it will result in a “new, collectively owned, for-profit entity to ensure that all stakeholders benefit from a model that delivers maximum excitement and competition among the game’s best players.”

The newly-founded LIV Golf continues to pluck talent from PGA Tour. The latest to join the lucrative tour is four-time major winner Brooks Koepka.

Koepka switching from PGA Tour to LIV Golf is yet to be announced, but multiple reports say the official confirmation should come by the end of the week. In the meantime, the 32-year-old has canceled his appearance at the upcoming Travelers Championship.

Koepka is expected to make his first LIV Golf appearance in late June at Portland, Oregon’s Pumpkin Ridge. He should play alongside his younger brother Chase, who also left PGA Tour recently.

Besides the Koepka brothers, LIV Golf’s roster features a number of other big names, including Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, and Patrick Reed. The tour is in its inaugural season and has already wrapped its first event in London, which saw a win from Charl Schwartzel.

Brooks Koepka previously spent 47 weeks as the world’s No. 1 golfer. He has 15 wins as a professional, including two U.S. Open championships and two PGA Championship trophies. However, things haven’t been smooth for Koepka in 2022, as his best result is 55th place at U.S. Open. He is currently ranked as the no. 18 player in the world.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan made good on his word and suspended all players who decided to participate in the inaugural LIV Golf event. The decision was confirmed via a memo issued to members of the tour.

As it currently stands, 17 members of the PGA Tour opted to play at the LIV Golf Invitational Series that started at London’s Centurion Club on Thursday. They are now banned from taking participation in any of the events organized by the tour, including the Presidents Cup.

Monahan reiterated that the same sanctions would be applied to PGA Tour players who decide to play at LIV Golf in the future.

“These players have made their choice for their own financial-based reasons,” Monahan said in a memo. “But they can’t demand the same PGA TOUR membership benefits, considerations, opportunities, and platform as you. That expectation disrespects you, our fans, and our partners.”

LIV Golf, backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, has been in the works since 2019. Its first season is set to have eight tournaments, with seven of them having a purse of $25 million. The winner of each tournament will receive $4 million, which is most than the PGA Tour’s record prize of $3.6 million.

The financial benefits of playing at LIV Golf attracted some big names, including six-time major champion Phil Mickelson and two-time major champion Dustin Johnson. The 2020’s U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed, who won the Masters in 2018, are reportedly also set to join.

South Korean golfer Sungjae Im clinched a four-stroke victory at the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas on Sunday, ending the week on 24 under. This was enough to help the 23-year-old rising star win his second PGA title.

“I know I won my first win on my 50th start and to win my second PGA Tour win on my 100th start, that in itself is a pretty amazing stat,” Im said of his iconic triumph. “It was hard coming, but I think today how everything went, I think it was a gift from above.”

While the rising star started the final day on three behind, he managed to claw his way back with an impressive birdie from 30 feet out at the first as well as a 10-foot gain at the fourth. He later achieved back-to-back gains from the sixth and tapped in a birdie ninth hole, thereby leapfrogging Matthew Wolff to take the pole position.

This marked the second consecutive time that Wolff came runner up in the Shriners Children’s Open, losing in a play-off game last year to Martin Laird.

Thirty-one-year-old golfer Tony Finau has brought his 1,975-day trophyless drought to an end by winning the PGA Tour’s Northern Trust Open. The Salt Lake City native last won a tournament in 2016, namely the Puerto Rico Open at Coco Beach.

Finau managed to beat the likes of the world’s No. 1 player Jon Rahm as well as defeat Cameron Smith in a playoff to take home the trophy, delivering the best back nine performance of his career in the process. At the final hole, Finau managed to put home a par in order to clinch victory.

Following his victory, Finau opened up about his feeling on the matter, “It’s more massive I think for just my sense of accomplishment. It’s hard losing, and it’s hard losing in front of the world. I’ve done it already a couple of times this year. That made me more hungry.”

During his drought, which lasted five years and 142 starts, Finau managed eight runner up finishes, three of which were playoff losses. He also managed 39 top 10 finishes.

As a result of his victory in the Jersey City-based tournament, Finau has moved to the poll position in the FedEx Cup standings for the first time, with just two events left in the competition. Should he manage to remain in top spot, he will be able to attain a $15 million grand prize.

Brooks Koepka received another recognition for the phenomenal season he had and was named the PGA Tour Player of the Year for 2017-18. This comes after Koepka won two majors and finished in ninth place in the FedExCup, which was his career-best. The 28-year-old American also had four additional top-10 finishes.

Other finalists for the PGA Tour Player of the Year honor were Francesco Molinari, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Justin Rose, and Bryson DeChambeau.

On behalf of the PGA TOUR, our congratulations to Brooks Koepka on being voted PGA TOUR Player of the Year by his peers,” – said PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan in a statement. “Brooks has brought a new brand of athleticism to the PGA TOUR, and we saw the results this year with his historic season at the major championships and a top-10 finish in the FedExCup. These feats were accomplished despite missing significant time due to injury, a testament to his work ethic and perseverance throughout the season.

Brooks Koepka managed to win his second consecutive U.S. Open in June 2018, while winning PGA Championship in two months later. By doing so, he became the first golfer since 2000 and Tiger Woods to win both of these majors in the same year.
