Justin Thomas entered the last day of the 2022 PGA Championship seven shots behind leader Mito Pereira. At that point, you wouldn’t blame Thomas if he stopped hoping to claim his second major title. But the 29-year-old player never lost hope and it resulted in a memorable comeback win.

When golfers took the Southern Hills Country Club course on Sunday, it seemed like a battle between Pereira and Will Zalatoris, who was three shots behind, would determine the winner of the tournament. But both Pereira and Zalatoris started struggling towards the finishing line, allowing Thomas to move up the board.

Thomas’ ferocious comeback started with a birdie at the ninth and an impressive 64-foot putt on the 11th for another birdie. He then continued to chip away the lead from Pereira and Zalatoris to get a chance for 10 feet putt for birdie at the 18th. This led to a rare slip-up on the final day for Thomas, as he missed the putt and had to settle for par to finish five-under. Zalatoris also finished under five after par on the 18th, while Pereira double-bogeyed to slip to four-under and miss the playoff cut.

In the playoffs, it was Thomas who was calmer under pressure. He birdied the 13th and 17th holes and only needed par on the 18th to seal the win after Zalatoris missed a birdie on the same hole.

This was the second major trophy and second PGA Championship win for Justin Thomas. It is also his first win on PGA Tour in more than a year. His seven-under comeback is the biggest in the tournament’s history since John Mahaffey did the same in 1978.

Thirty-one-year-old golfer Tony Finau has brought his 1,975-day trophyless drought to an end by winning the PGA Tour’s Northern Trust Open. The Salt Lake City native last won a tournament in 2016, namely the Puerto Rico Open at Coco Beach.

Finau managed to beat the likes of the world’s No. 1 player Jon Rahm as well as defeat Cameron Smith in a playoff to take home the trophy, delivering the best back nine performance of his career in the process. At the final hole, Finau managed to put home a par in order to clinch victory.

Following his victory, Finau opened up about his feeling on the matter, “It’s more massive I think for just my sense of accomplishment. It’s hard losing, and it’s hard losing in front of the world. I’ve done it already a couple of times this year. That made me more hungry.”

During his drought, which lasted five years and 142 starts, Finau managed eight runner up finishes, three of which were playoff losses. He also managed 39 top 10 finishes.

As a result of his victory in the Jersey City-based tournament, Finau has moved to the poll position in the FedEx Cup standings for the first time, with just two events left in the competition. Should he manage to remain in top spot, he will be able to attain a $15 million grand prize.

PGA Championship will be the first golf major championship to take place in 2020. The professional Golfers’ Association of America confirmed on Monday that they received necessary permissions to proceed with the event at San Francisco’s Harding Park. The tournament will be held between August 6th and August 9th but without the presence of fans.

PGA Championship was initially scheduled for May but the coronavirus pandemic forced the organizers to postpone the tournament for a later date. Several scenarios were discussed in the meantime, including the change of venue to Charlotte’s Quail Hollow Club or Louisville’s Valhalla Golf Club if Harding Park isn’t an option.

California’s health official now gave the “green light” for the tournament to take place at the planned site without fans, which was ultimately accepted by PGA of America.

“While the local community cannot be with us physically on-site, we will certainly carry their spirit of resilience and unity with us as we stage our major championship, on their behalf, for all the world to see and enjoy.” said PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh.

Besides PGA of America, two other majors were rescheduled compared to their original dates. The U.S. Open will now take place between September 17th and September 20th, while the Masters is now scheduled to be played from November 12th to November 15th. The Open, on the other hand, has been canceled this year.
