With the New York Mets looking like they are heading towards a painful rebuild, All-Star slugger Pete Alonso is looking for a way out. According to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers, Alonso is evaluating his options and already has the Chicago Cubs as his preferred destination.

Alonso is entering the last year of his contract with the Mets and is set to become a free agent after the 2024 campaign. If the Mets end up deciding that they are not willing to give him a huge deal, they will likely look to trade the 28-year-old player in order to avoid losing him for nothing.

Several teams are reportedly interested in his services, but the Cubs are seen as the favorite. The franchise received information that Alonso wants to come to Chicago and is willing to be aggressive in attempts to acquire him.

Rogers, who spoke about Alonso’s situation during an appearance on ESPN’s Kap and J. Hood show, said that the player would also be willing to work out a contract extension with the Cubs that would work for both sides.

“They have a pretty good team, and a great market,” Rogers added. “I think that he wants to come here as much as they want him.”

Despite the Mets’ disappointing 2023 campaign, Alonso played well and earned his third All-Star nod. He finished the season with a .217 batting average, 46 homers and 118 RBIs.

The New York Mets’ 2019 season has been a bit of a disappointment, but the standout season from rookie first baseman Pete Alonso has been a definite bright spot for the team this season.

He continued his torrid pace in 2019 with a two home run game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, pushing his already-impressive season total to 47 and leading his team to an important 3-1 home win.

The rookie first baseman is the leading candidate for the 2019 NL Rookie of the Year award thanks to big performances like Monday nights. While the Mets aren’t in a position to make the playoffs (barring a huge late-season rally), the team can thank the Florida native for at least a few bright moments in a challenging season.

Alonso now has a .270 batting average to go with his 47 home runs and 109 RBI on the season. Few could’ve ever expected this strong of a performance from the under-hyped prospect coming into his rookie season.

The 24-year-old now owns a two-homer lead over Angels star Mike Trout for the MLB home run lead. The rookie has displayed prodigious power over the course of his rookie season, also racking up the 2019 Home Run Derby Trophy.

Alonso will have plenty of time to add to his total until the season’s completion at the end of this month.

Pete Alonso is hands down the favorite to win the NL Rookie of the Year award. His impressive rookie resume includes winning the most dramatic Home Run Derby ever and breaking the NL rookie home run record. After his 42nd home run, he now holds the Mets single-season record as well.

Alonso took Cubs starter Yu Darvish deep to right field in the fourth inning for his record home run. The previous Mets record of 41 was set by Todd Hundley in 1996 and matched by Carlos Beltran in 2006.

Earlier this month, he broke Cody Bellinger’s NL rookie home run record set in 2017. The MLB rookie record sits at 52, set by Aaron Judge that same year.

His homer put the Mets up 1-0, but the Cubs ended up coming back and winning the game. Despite the loss, the Mets have been on a tear recently and are trying to catch up in the wild card race. “Polar Bear”, as Alonso has been affectionately nicknamed in New York, has been a big part of that, and looks to continue building on his impressive rookie year.

Monday night’s Home Run Derby at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio was one for the ages.

Eight sluggers competed for the chance to win $1.6 million in total prize money, with $1 million going to the winner, $500,000 to the second-place finisher, and $100,000 going to the player who hit the longest home run on the night.

Who would’ve ever guessed that the prize money would go to two rookies whose annual salaries are less than the amounts of money that they won last night?

The big winner of the night was New York Mets rookie first baseman Pete Alonso, who won the contest and took home a million dollars after beating out Toronto Blue Jays phenom Vladimir Guerrero Jr. by a 23-22 tally in the final round.

Guerrero, who was visibly tired after a marathon second round in which his showdown against Dodgers outfielder Joc Pederson went to two “swing off” tiebreakers, gave it his all, but was overcome by the burly first baseman who has totaled 30 home runs in a breakout rookie campaign.

The Blue Jays third baseman didn’t go home empty-handed himself after hitting an impressive total of 91 home runs. He hit a 476-foot blast, the longest of the night, and set the record as the youngest participant in the history of the competition at 20 years old.

It was a memorable contest full of moonshots and drama that baseball fans won’t soon forget.
