In previous years, Green Bay Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers got accustomed of having to put on some unreal performances in the attempt to overcome the deficits of his defense and get a win for his team. It seems like he doesn’t have to do that anymore.

In the first three games of the 2019 NFL season, the story of the Packers isn’t Rodgers or offense; it’s their intimidating defense. The defense carried Green Bay to 3-0 record and made up for the growing pains that the offense had under the new coach Matt LaFleur. They lead the league in QB pressures and takeaways while being second in scoring.

Packers’ offense, on the other side, ranks at the bottom of the NFL in total offense, third-down conversion, and scoring. It’s something that Rodgers doesn’t want to see happening.

“It’s time for us to do our part on offense,” – said Rodgers ahead of Thursday’s game against Philadelphia Eagles. “Moving forward, we’re going to play a stretch of really good football teams. At some point, we can’t expect our defense to shut everybody down. They have been, but at some point, the offense is going to have to wake up and start making some plays.”

Rodgers has been especially quiet this season, throwing for just 647 yards and four touchdowns, while having QBR of 96.5. The rest of the offense is also slow to wake up, as their star wide receiver Davante Adams has 15 catches for 198 yards and no TDs to show for while tight end Jimmy Graham managed only three catches for 30 yards.

Although things look good for Green Bay at the moment, Rodgers knows that he has to do his part in order for his team to have a real chance at the Super Bowl this year.

“We’ve never wanted to just manage the football game around here,” – he added. “The standards are very high for us. We’ve got to play a lot better on offense. We’ve played some good defenses, no doubt about it, but the standard and expectations are very high here, and we haven’t met them on offense.”

In previous years, Green Bay Packers rarely took part in the free agency, opting to construct their roster via the draft and focus the attention to their own free agent. Well, it seems that this approach is now out of the door.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, Green Bay added two highly coveted players on the defense in outside Linebacker Za’Darius Smith and safety Adrian Amos. Smith, who previously played for Baltimore Ravens, will reportedly get a four-year, $66 million deal while Amos, who played with Chicago Bears in 2018, will ink a four-year, $37 million contract.

Rapoport also reports that Packers’ new general manager Brian Gutekunst won’t stop there. Gutekunst is working on a deal to get former Washington Redskins edge rusher Preston Smith on a four-year, $52 million deal.

Za’Darius Smith was a fourth-round pick by Ravens in 2014 and immediately impacted the team by playing 15 games his rookie year and having 30 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and two passes defended. Smith’s career stats include 119 tackles, 18.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles.

Adrian Amos was a fifth-round pick in 2015 by Green Bay’s bitter rivals Chicago Bears. During his time with the Bears, Amos established himself as one of the more reliable safeties in football, playing a total of 60 games so far. His career stats include 274 tackles, 2.0 sacks, three interceptions, and one defensive touchdown.

Preston Smith has also proved himself as an impactful player since entering the league in 2015 as a second round pick. His NFL stats include 167 tackles, 24.5 sacks, four interceptions and four forced fumbles.
