New Jersey Devils acquired defenseman P.K. Subban last summer, expecting the veteran to front their defensive line for years to come. Things didn’t exactly work out that way for now, as Subban struggled to make an impact in 2019/20, contributing just with 18 points (7 goals and 11 assists) in 68 games.

In a recent chat with Men’s Journal, Subban himself acknowledged that his performances haven’t been on the expected level this season. However, the 31-year-old still believes he is one of the best in NHL on his position.

“In my opinion, I’m still one of the top defensemen in the League,” said Subban. “When I’m in the biggest games, the biggest moments, I feel that I’m one of the players that teams would love to have on their team and that they can rely on, and that’s always been my game.”

P.K. Subban came to New Jersey when Nashville Predators decided to trade him in exchange for Steven Santini, prospect Jeremy Davies, and two second-round draft picks on the second day of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.  This put him in an unusual situation, as the veteran went from a Stanley Cup contender to a struggling team.

According to Subban, this drastic change of scenery needed a bit of adjustment, but he remains optimistic about his future.

“So it’s an adjustment, but I definitely believe that there’s better things to come for me in my career, whether it’s winning a Norris Trophy or Stanley Cup,” he added.

Besides Devils and Predators, Subban also played with Montreal Canadiens over the course of his NHL career. He has three All-Star appearances and was  James Norris Memorial Trophy winner in 2013. His career stats include 645 NHL appearances in which he scored 98 goals and dished 310 assists.

After being handed an early exit in the 2019 Stanley Cup playoffs, Nashville Predators have decided to shake up some things before the start of 2019/2020 NHL season. Predators confirmed over the weekend that they have traded away their All-Star defenseman P.K. Subban.

Predators are sending Subban to the New Jersey Devils while getting D Steven Santini and prospect Jeremy Davies in return. Devils will also send second-round picks in 2019 and 2020 to Nashville as part of the deal.

“We appreciate P.K.’s contribution to the Predators and the Nashville community over the past three seasons, which have seen our organization have unprecedented success,” – said Predators general manager David Poile in a statement. “He was an integral part of our run to the 2017 Stanley Cup Final, the 2018 Presidents’ Trophy and back-to-back Central Division titles. His work off the ice speaks for itself — he was an impactful member of our community, especially through the groundbreaking Blueline Buddies initiative.”

Following the confirmation of the trade, Subban shared a video on social media in which he thanked Predators’ team, teammates, fans, and community for “embracing” him for the past three years.

Despite playing only 63 games last season, Subban managed to put together a solid season in which he contributed 31 points. Still, the Predators decided to move on from the 30-year-old due to salary cap concerns. Devils, on the other hand, decided to use the opportunity to get a player on a discount as they look to return to the playoffs next season.
