The Los Angeles Clippers are giving their disgruntled players P.J. Tucker and Bones Hyland some time off. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, both Tucker and Hyland were sent home and will re-join the team after the All-Star break.

Tucker and Hyland haven’t been part of the Clippers’ rotation for a while, and both players expressed frustration about their roles on the team. This was particularly the case with Tucker, who was at one point given permission to seek a trade to a team that would give him more playing time.

Trade talks surrounding Tucker never caught traction, and he remained in LA after the NBA trade deadline passed. It is unlikely that he will receive a buyout, considering his $11.5 million player option next season could make him a trade asset for the Clippers.

Since joining the franchise as part of the James Harden trade from the Philadelphia 76ers on November 1, Tucker only played 12 games for the Clippers. His last appearance came on November 28, when he played eight minutes in a 113-104 loss to the Denver Nuggets. Since then, he hasn’t entered a single game.

Charania reports that Tucker had constructive conversations with Clippers’ head coach Ty Lue in recent days and that he could return to the rotation after the All-Star break. Lue values Tucker’s experience and believes he could help the team when playoffs arrive.

The path for Hyland to receive more playing time seems less certain. The 23-year-old played 19 games this season, averaging 6.2 points per game.

Veteran power forward P.J. Tucker might not be a member of the Los Angeles Clippers for too long. According to multiple reports, Tucker is unhappy with his role on the team and might push for a trade.

Tucker joined the Clippers as part of the trade with the Philadelphia 76ers that landed James Harden in LA. The 38-year-old player was expected to be a valuable contributor to the team off the bench but hasn’t played much recently.

Clippers’ head coach Ty Lue didn’t put Tucker in at all in the past five games, while he only played 14 games combined in the last two games he was on the floor. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Tucker’s struggles earlier in the season, which included career-lows in shooting and 3-point percentage, as well as the team’s commitment to younger players, have left the veteran stranded.

Charania reports that Tucker has behaved like a professional, even serving as a mentor for the players who replaced him in a lineup. However, he isn’t hiding his frustration with lack of playing time and has had discussions with the Clippers’ front office about parting ways.

P.J. Tucker will likely get the attention of more than a few teams. While he rarely fills up the stat sheet, Tucker is known as a valuable defender who brings toughness and reliable corner-three shooting. He will earn $11 million in the 2023-24 season and has a $11.5 million player option for the next season.

The Milwaukee Bucks added a significant piece to their roster as part of their attempts to finally get out of the Eastern Conference and play in the NBA Finals. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Bucks made a trade with the Houston Rockets that will land them experienced forward PJ Tucker.

The trade will see Milwaukee acquiring Tucker, forward Rodions Kurucs, and a 2022 first-round pick that the Rockets previously owned. Houston, on the other hand, will get guard DJ Augustin, power forward DJ Wilson, and the Bucks’ first-rounder in 2023.

As part of the deal, the Rockets also get the right to swap their 2021 second-rounder with Milwaukee’s first-round selection.

PJ Tucker and the Rockets agreed earlier this month that it would be in both side’s interest to part ways. Several playoff contenders showed interest in Tucker in recent weeks, but Bucks were reportedly the most aggressive in their pursuit.

Milwaukee most likely expects the 35-year-old veteran to give them a significant boost with his defensive prowess while also providing veteran leadership and valuable playoff experience.

Tucker, who also played for the Toronto Raptors and Phoenix Suns earlier in his career, joined the Rockets ahead of the 2017-18 season. Since then, he was one of the team’s key players thanks to his ability to play multiple positions, guard the opponent’s best players, and hit threes consistently.
