French striker Olivier Giroud is coming to MLS. According to The Athletic’s Tom Bogert, Giroud is nearing an agreement with LAFC.

Giroud is expected to sign a Designated Player contract with LAFC and will join his new club once his campaign with France’s national team at UEFA Euro 2024 wraps up. The deal is expected to keep Giroud in Los Angeles through the 2025 season.

It was recently reported that Giroud, who will become a free agent in the summer after his contract with Seria A powerhouse AC Milan expires, has been in contact with a number of MLS clubs, including LA Galaxy. However, LAFC always had the upper hand in the negotiations, considering they had the player’s discovery rights and were able to sign him without any hold-ups.

Giroud has scored 14 goals and added nine assists in 36 matches for Milan in 2023-24, his third season with the club. He previously also played for Montpellier, Arsenal, and Chelsea among other clubs.

LAFC has been on a great run in recent two seasons, making back-to-back MLS Cup Finals appearances and winning a title in 2022. The club made a number of moves this offseason to keep that run going including signing forward Denis Bouanga to a long-term extension and bringing in veteran goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. They are currently sixth in the Western Conference with seven points from the first five games of the 2024 season.

French striker Olivier Giroud won’t be leaving Stamford Bridge just yet. Despite being one step away from leaving Chelsea in January, Giroud now signed a contract extension, which will keep him with the club through the 2020/21 season. London club also handed out a new deal to backup goalkeeper Willy Caballero.

Giroud was linked with a move since mid-2019, being close to changing clubs on several occasions. However, after all of the proposed moves fell through, the 33-year-old marksman decided to give his all with Chelsea and it obviously paid off.

“Since I’ve been back at Chelsea, Olivier has been brilliant as a professional and as a man in general,” said Chelsea’s manager Frank Lampard in a statement. “He has great qualities to help the squad both on and off the pitch, not only with his talent but with the example he sets every day and the experience he brings to our young squad. I am very pleased that will continue next season.”

Olivier Giroud joined Chelsea in 2018 after spending the previous six years with their cross-town rival Arsenal. During his time with Chelsea, Giroud played 76 games and scored 21 goals. This season he made 13 appearances in all competitions and scored three goals.

Caballero will also remain with Chelsea until 2021, having arrived in London from Manchester City in 2017. He made nine appearances this season.

”I trust in Willy, he trains brilliantly and is a great professional,” Lampard added. “He stepped into the team earlier this year and showed his quality, and his experience is invaluable in the dressing room.”

Don’t be surprised if you see France and Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud playing in Major League Soccer in the next few years. During a recent interview with RMC Sport, Giroud admitted that he is tempted to make an MLS move as he finds the league “interesting.”

“MLS, for my family, my children who speak English, it is interesting. In a year? Two years? I don’t know when. But of course, I will be opened to a new challenge,” – said Giroud.

According to ESPN, Giroud wasn’t just keeping his options open. The 33-year-old reportedly occasionally watches MLS games and has been approached by teams to make a move to the United States in the past.

Giroud could come to MLS as soon as next June, when his current contract with Chelsea expires. However, the player intends to take time and consider all his options when the time comes.

“It is not only MLS which could interest me,” – he added.

Olivier Giroud joined Chelsea in 2017 from Arsenal, but wasn’t as productive in English Premier League as it was expected, scoring just five goals in 43 games. He did, however, put on a stellar performance in Europa League last season, scoring 11 goals and helping the team to win the competition.
