The city of Sacramento could get an MLB franchise in 2025, albeit on a temporary basis. According to multiple reports, the Oakland Athletics are considering making Sacramento their temporary home before moving to Las Vegas.

The Athletics are bound to relocate to Las Vegas, but they won’t start playing there before the 2028 MLB season. Considering their lease agreement for Oakland’s Coliseum expires after the 2024 campaign, they will need to find a place to play for three seasons.

Evan Drellich of The Athletic reports that Sacramento is currently the “front-runner” to provide the A’s with a temporary home. The franchise would move into Sutter Health Park, home of the San Francisco Giants’ Triple-A affiliate River Cats.

There are several other options on the table for the Athletics. They could extend their lease at Coliseum, allowing them to stay put for several more seasons. However, this option appears to be less likely, considering the strained relationship between the franchise and the city of Oakland. Reportedly, Oakland would be interested in extending the lease only under the condition that MLB promises the city an expansion franchise at some point in the future.

Another alternative for the A’s is a temporary move to Salt Lake City, but it is unclear how appealing this option might be for the franchise.

The high-flying Baltimore Orioles have acquired right-hand pitcher Shintaro Fujinami in a trade with the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday. The Orioles gave up minor league pitcher Easton Lucas to close the deal.

The trade was officially confirmed by the Orioles on the team’s social media accounts.

Fujinami is currently in his first MLB season. He joined the A’s on a one-year, $3.25 million contract after previously spending his entire career with the Hanshin Tigers of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball League.

The 29-year-old player started his MLB journey as a starter but ended up being moved to the bullpen after going 0-4 in his first four starts. He played a total of 34 games and has a 5-8 record with an 8.57 ERA and 51 strikeouts.

Lucas, on the other hand, is yet to make his debut in the majors. He spent the 2023 season with Double-A Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk and has a 2.92 ERA with 38 strikeouts.

By acquiring Fujinami, the Orioles are betting that a change of scenery can lead the player to replicate some of his impressive form from NPB. They are also adding much-needed depth to their bullpen, which performed well this season but is considered top-heavy.

The Oakland Athletics were expected to be bad in the 2023 MLB season after moving on from several of their key players in the past years. However, no one expected them to be almost historically bad as they turned out to be.

The A’s suffered a 3-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night, extending their losing streak to six games. They have now dropped 14 out of their last 16 games and have the worst record in MLB at 10-40. This is also the worst start of the season for an MLB team since the 1930s.

The last team that had this bad of a record throughout the first 50 games of the season was Boston Red Sox in 1932. Prior to them, the 1897 St. Louis Browns also went 10-40 to start the campaign.

There are only three teams that had uglier starts of the season than the A’s currently have. The Cleveland Spiders in 1899 and Washington Senators in 1904 started at 9-41, while Louisville Colonels were 7-43 to start the 1897 season.

The Oakland Athletics are not expected to start playing better anytime soon and might be in for a few more years of rebuilding before getting back on track. The franchise will hope that happens sooner than later, considering their planned move to Las Vegas.

Las Vegas, Nevada, could soon get an MLB team. The Oakland Athletics announced on Wednesday that they had purchased a piece of land near Las Vegas Strip with the intention of building a new baseball park there.

According to Mick Akers of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the A’s bought 49 acres of land and have the option to get an additional 8 acres at a later date. The plan is to construct a $1.5 billion-worth stadium that will have 30,000 seats and a partially retractable roof. The team hopes it will break ground by next year and have the ballpark completed in 2027.

The A’s have been trying to move from Oakland Coliseum for several years now and were in discussions to build a new stadium at the Oakland waterfront. But after talks with city officials stalled, the organization decided to pursue an opportunity to relocate to Nevada.

“For a while we were on parallel paths (with Oakland), but we have turned our attention to Las Vegas to get a deal here for the A’s and find a long-term home,” the team president Dave Kaval told the Review-Journal. “Oakland has been a great home for us for over 50 years, but we really need this 20-year saga completed, and we feel there’s a path here in Southern Nevada to do that.”

The Athletics have a green light from the league to get the move done, with Commissioner Rob Manfred saying on Wednesday that the MLB supports “the A’s turning their focus on Las Vegas.”

The Athletics moved to Oakland in 1968 from Kansas City and enjoyed a successful early run that saw them win four championships. However,  the franchise hasn’t had much success in recent decades, failing to reach the World Series since 1990.

Righthander Trevor May has agreed to a $7 million, one-year contract with the Oakland Athletics, sources confirmed on Monday. The player will receive a signing bonus of $1 million with a $6 million salary next season.

Other bonuses that May is eligible to receive include $500,000 in performance bonuses along with $125,000 each for the 35th, 40th, 45th, and 50th games that he completes. Should he be traded before his contract lapses, May will be eligible to receive a one-time $100,000 assignment bonus from the team that purchases him.

During his time with the New York Mets last season, May was 2-0 with one save and a 5.04 ERA in 26 relief appearances. His season was disrupted when he suffered an inflamed right tricep, forcing him to miss May 2 until August 3.

Prior to his move to the Mets, May made 26 starts and 283 relief appearances over eight seasons for the Minnesota Twins. He was 32-24 with a 4.35 ERA during this period.

In order to make room for May in their 40-man roster, the Athletics chose to designate outfielder Cody Thomas for assignment.

After a terrible 0-6 start to the season, the Oakland Athletics have been playing some darn good baseball lately. It seems like almost everything has been going their way—and such was certainly the case in their last game, when they won their 11th straight on a mere stroke of luck.

They were squared off against the Minnesota Twins, and the game had just gone into extra innings. The Twins took a 12-11 lead in the top of the tenth, and it looked like the A’s win-streak would finally be snapped.

In the bottom of the tenth, Oakland outfielder Ramon Laureano stood at the plate with the bases loaded, two outs, behind the count at 1-2, and his team behind one run.

Things looked even worse when he hit a fierce grounder down the third base line. Although he hit it hard, this should’ve been an easy routine play for Minnesota third baseman Luis Arraez. But the A’s good fortune was about to continue.

Arraez scooped up the ball and proceeded to throw it to first base. The only problem was, his throw was way off the mark. It overshot the first baseman, and Oakland was able to score two runs to win the game.

This crazy ending illustrates perfectly how things have been going for the Oakland Athletics. We look forward to seeing how long this win streak of theirs goes on for.

The San Diego Padres continued their busy offseason on Monday by making a trade with the Oakland Athletics to acquire shortstop Jurickson Profar.

San Diego, which has already signed Drew Pomeranz to a free-agent deal as well as acquiring Zach Davies and Trent Grisham from the Milwaukee Brewers, now have a player that profiles as the team’s starting second baseman heading into the 2020 season.

They have given up catcher Austin Allen, who struggled in his big league debut with San Diego but hit .330 with 20 home runs at AAA last year, in exchange for the 26-year-old Curacao native.

The hole left by dealing Luis Urias in the team’s trade with the Brewers last week needed to be filled somehow and the acquisition of Profar appears to do just that.

Oakland was expected to non-tender Profar after a disappointing 2019 season had they not found a trade partner for him. Profar hit only .218 in 139 games with Oakland last season, but he did slug 20 home runs and collect 67 RBI.

This will be Profar’s third Major League team in three seasons, as he spent the previous years of his career in the Texas Rangers organization.

Once considered a top prospect, Profar will have another chance to break out in San Diego, possibly his last as a starting player if he does not show improvements.

The Tampa Bay Rays took care of business at the Oakland Coliseum on Wednesday night, beating the A’s by a 5-1 final score to earn a date with the Houston Astros in the AL Division Series.

Tampa Bay went on the road and beat the A’s on the backs of strong pitching performances from starter Charlie Morton as well their relief core and a barrage of home runs.

It didn’t take long for the Rays to take a lead, as leadoff man Yandy Diaz hit a solo shot to lead off the game off of A’s starter Sean Manaea.

Rays starter Charlie Morton, who pitched five innings, allowing zero earned runs and striking out five, got two more runs of support in the next inning when Avisail Garcia hit Tampa’s second home run of the game, a two-run blast off of Manaea.

Diaz then tagged Manaea with another solo shot in the 3rd, his second of the night, to give Morton and the Rays a 4-0 lead.

Tommy Pham hit Tampa Bay’s fourth and final homer of the night in the fifth inning.

The A’s pushed across a run after an error and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning, but ultimately couldn’t put together any more offense for the rest of the night.

Tampa will now have the chance to take on the MLB’s strongest regular season team, the Houston Astros, in the AL Divsion Series.

One of the top power hitters in baseball has reached an extension to stay with his current team through the end of the 2021 season.

Khris Davis, the Oakland Athletics’ slugging outfielder, agreed to terms with a 2-year, $33.5 million contract extension with his team. His current deal expires after this season.

Davis has blossomed into one of baseball’s best sluggers since joining Oakland in the 2016 season.

The 31-year-old designated hitter has combined to hit 143 home runs since he was traded to Oakland by the Milwaukee Brewers. This mark leads all hitters in MLB since the beginning of 2016.

The 2018 season was Davis’s best, as he hit 48 home runs to lead the Major Leagues. His feat was all the more impressive considering that his home stadium is one of the most difficult places to hit home runs in all of baseball.

Davis is off to another scorching start in 2019, as he’s already hit 10 home runs in only 20 games.

This deal shows Oakland’s commitment to having Davis anchor their lineup for several years to come.

The A’s and Khris Davis have been a perfect fit, and his agreement with the team on a new deal means that the happy marriage will continue for the time being.

Oakland Athletics’ starter Sean Manaea will undergo a shoulder surgery on September 19 and could miss the next full season depending on the outcome, his team has reported.

“Manaea will have arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder on Sept. 19 at the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles,” Athletics tweeted.

The 26-year old pitcher was dropped from the team’s starting lineup late last month following a minor shoulder impingement. On Tuesday, manager Bob Melvin announced that Manaea had booked a left shoulder surgery but was uncertain what would happen to him afterward.

“The specifics we’ll talk about more after the surgery so we’ll know exactly what was repaired. Unfortunately, it’s one we’ll basically have to wait a year for,” Melvin said. “You really and truly feel for him. He was the one guy here for a long time left in the rotation.”

Prior to the injury, the pitcher had a record of 3.59 ERA, 108 strikeouts and 1.08 WHIP. Now with a shoulder surgery, Manaea could miss a full season. Apart from him, Athletics currently weathers injuries for Kendall Graveman, Andrew Triggs, Brett Anderson, Paul Blackburn, Daniel Gossett, and Jharel Cotton.

In spite of the numerous injuries, the A’s currently stand second in the wild-card standings and only three games behind leaders Houston Astros.
