Multiple reports have confirmed that the New York Knicks have decided not to renew the contract of general manager Scott Perry. This comes after Knicks returned to the NBA playoffs after a season absence with a 5th-place finish in the Eastern Conference.

Perry has been the general manager of the Knicks since the 2017-18 season. This year, Perry worked closely alongside Knicks President Leon Rose and executive vice president William Wesley in an effort to improve on the Knicks’ disappointing 11th-place finish in the Eastern Conference the previous season.

The search for a new general manager is the latest in a series of pressing questions that the franchise will look to address this postseason. The Knicks do not have a first-round draft pick this year, making their search for fresh talent more challenging, however, they do possess four first-rounders from prior deals that they could leverage to broker a deal. The team also has other young talent that could be enticing to other teams, such as Immanuel Quickley, Mitchell Robinson, RJ Barrett, and Quentin Grimes.

After missing out on superstar players in recent years, the New York Knicks are ready to attempt to land one again this offseason. According to SNY’s Ian Begley, one of their potential targets is Houston Rockets’ All-Star guard Russell Westbrook.

With head coach Mike D’Antoni gone, the Rockets look like they are set to make some other big changes this offseason. The chatter around the league is that this could include a roster overhaul, in which case Westbrook would be made available.

If this turns out to be the case, the Knicks will explore making a move for the 2017’s NBA MVP as they look to get back to contention. Begley adds that Westbrook himself would likely not be opposed to the move, considering that he had New York on his list of preferred destinations when Oklahoma City Thunders decided to trade him last year.

Despite the rumors, the chances of Houston moving Russell Westbrook remain slim. Although the 31-year-old guard had a slow start in 2019/20, he finished the shortened regular season on a high note and took over as the team’s most dominant force on the offense. Westbrook averaged 27.2 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 7.0 assists.

The only possible reason for the Rockets to move Westbrook would be his huge contract. The team is currently maxed-out cap-wise, and getting off his remaining three-year, $132 million deal would allow them bigger flexibility in retooling their squad in order to continue building around James Harden.

New York Knicks were trying to move on from center Joakim Noah for some time now, but they have failed to find a trade partner for the 33-year-old and his $19.3 million contract. Finally, the team stopped trying on Saturday and decided to waive Noah using the stretch provision.

By waiving Noah with a stretch provision, Knicks will stretch the $19.3 million salary cap hit for 2019-20 to $6.4 million. The downside of the move is that they will have a $6.4 million cap hit in the two seasons beyond that as well.

Reportedly, the New York Knicks have decided to move on from Joakim Noah’s contract earlier so they could pursue a max-contract player in the summer of 2019. With Noah out, Knicks will have $31 million in cap space next year but would have to make a few moves to get to $38.15 million annually, which is projected max salary for players with 10-plus years of service in the league.

The 2019 class of free agents is believed to be one of the most exciting ones in the last couple of years and will include Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, Kyrie Irving, and Jimmy Butler.

Joakim Noah joined the Knicks in 2016, signing a four-year, $72 million contract. Noah, however, never managed to justify big money and went on to play 53 games for New York in two years, before being removed from the team after a conflict with coach Jeff Hornacek in February.
