Quarterback Aaron Rodgers will make his debut for the New York Jets against the New York Giants on Saturday in what will be his first preseason game since 2018. While the 39-year-old player participated in every training camp practice, it was backup Zach Wilson who started the Jets’ first three pre-season games.

Jets coach Robert Saleh previously mentioned that the four-time MVP could potentially start in the game against the Giants for a pre-season tuneup. Despite his lack of preseason games historically, Rodgers mentioned his openness to participating. “I wouldn’t mind playing in the preseason,” he explained. “I wouldn’t mind if Robert said, ‘Hey, we are going to go. Let’s do it.'”

Several other regular starters who were largely absent during the summer are expected to appear against the Giants. These include wide receiver Garrett Wilson and running backs Breece Hall and newly signed Dalvin Cook.

Free agent running back Dalvin Cook is set to become a New York Jets player, sources familiar with the matter confirmed early Tuesday morning. The 28-year-old player is expected to sign a one-year contract worth $8.6 million.

Cook was released from the Minnesota Vikings on June 8 after spending four straight Pro Bowl seasons with the team. The Jets pounced on Cook’s availability soon after, with coach Robert Saleh recently admitting, “Obviously, you don’t want to say no to a great player.”

In addition to being a talented and experienced option, the running back provides the Jets with some much-needed depth as number one choice back Breece Hall continues to be eased back into action upon recovering from ACL surgery. While the Jets are optimistic about Hall’s availability for the Week 1 game against the Buffalo Bills, time is running out as he remains on the PUP list.

New York received the funds they need for Cook’s arrival when Aaron Rodgers agreed to take a $35 million pay cut. Cook is also a capable playmaker who could form a strong partnership with Rodger, boosting the Jets’ creative options.

The New York Jets have hired former Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Todd Downing as their passing-game coordinator, a source revealed to ESPN on Monday. In addition to helping the Jets reshape their offensive abilities, Downing also provides the team with trade options during the offseason due to his ties with highly sought-after quarterbacks Ryan Tannehill and Derek Carr.

NFL Network also reported the appointment, which is the latest move in head coach Robert Saleh’s efforts to rebuild the Jets’ frontline following a disappointing season. Saleh’s biggest move to date in terms of this overhaul was replacing offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur with Nathaniel Hackett. He also replaced offensive line coach John Benton with Keith Carter.

Downing was the Oakland Raiders’ quarterback coach in 2015 and 2016 as well as their coordinator in 2017, before making his move to the Titans.

Last November, Downing made headlines as he was arrested on a DUI charge, serving a 48-hour jail sentence as a result. While he was kept on at the Titians following this controversy, he was ultimately dismissed at the end of the season as the Titans came second in the AFC South.

The New York Jets rookie offensive tackle Max Mitchell was discovered to have blood clots in both his right calf and lung, his father John revealed on Thursday. Initially placed on the non-football injury list by his team, Mitchell will now be sidelined for the remainder of the season.

John Mitchell added that the player is suffering from a form of hereditary blood clotting called factor V Leiden. As a result of this condition, Mitchell is on blood-thinning medication.

“It should not affect his career long-term,” the player’s father confirmed. “Of course, we’re taking a big, great deep breath with all of this, but his future is promising.”

Jets coach Robert Saleh placed Mitchell on his team’s NFI on Wednesday, however, he declined to give a reason for this designation. Mitchell was removed from his position of right tackle during the second quarter of the Jets’ 27-22 loss to the Minnesota Vikings as he appeared to be “struggling” in the field.

Initially believed to be muscle spasms, Mitchell underwent tests on Monday that revealed that the player had clots. it is believed that the player may remain on blood-thinning medication for several months.

The New York Jets are mixing it up at the quarterback position once again. According to the team’s head coach Robert Saleh, veteran Joe Flacco will start under center for Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins. This will mark the third different starter for the Jets in 2021.

The Jets opened the season with rookie Zach Wilson handling the starting duties. The 2021’s second overall pick got hurt in Week 7, which allowed fourth-year player Mike White to take over. White impressed on several occasions, most notably in 34-31 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, but had an ugly outing last week that saw him throw four picks in a 17-45 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

During a chat with reporters on Wednesday, Saleh insisted that White isn’t being demoted due to poor performance against the Bills. Instead, he believes that Flacco’s experience will give the Jets a better chance against the blitz-heavy Dolphins defense.

“Joe’s got a history,” Saleh said via. “He’s in the record books all over the place. He’s a world champion, so he’s got a history of playing good ball. One drive didn’t solidify anything; it’s his history more than anything. He’s seen these type of defenses many times over.”

Flacco joined the Jets in late October, arriving in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles. He saw his first action in 2021 against the Bills, stepping up in the fourth quarter and completing all three passes he attempted while throwing for 47 yards and a touchdown.

Speaking about his chance to start a game again for the first time in almost a year, Flacco said that he wants to prove that he still belongs in this league.

“When you’re a backup, and you get traded, all kinds of things run through your head,” he added. “You want to play. Not only that, but you want to prove again to yourself that you can play. A lot of emotions come up.”

New York Jets rookie quarterback Zach Wilson is expected to miss time due to sprained PCL in his right knee. Wilson was hurt in a 54-13 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday.

The 2021 second overall pick suffered the injury after being tackled by the Pats’ Matt Judon early in the second quarter. He left the game after the play and did not return.

“I think my toe kind of just got stuck in the ground, and Judon just kind of fell on it with all of his weight, and that kind of twisted it. Felt a pop there,” said Wilson after the game.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Wilson had an MRI on his knee on Sunday night, and the test revealed the PCL sprain. The Jets are reportedly confident the BYU product will play again in 2021 and expect him back in two to four weeks.

Zach Wilson has had a rough first season in the NFL, struggling with turnovers and inconsistency. He is currently completing just 57.5 of his passes while throwing for 1,168 yards, four touchdowns, and nine interceptions.

Wilson’s injury had put the Jets in a tough spot as they entered the season without a veteran QB on their roster. Backup Mike White, the fifth-round selection in 2018, stepped in for Wilson against New England and finished the contest with 20 completed passes out of 32 attempts while throwing for a touchdown and being picked twice. This was the first game action for White since he entered the league.

When the New York Jets signed inside linebacker C.J. Mosley to a five-year, $85 million deal in 2019 they believed their struggles on the defensive end of the ball were finally coming to an end. But two years later, all that they got from Mosley was two games that he didn’t even complete.

Mosley certainly knows that he didn’t fulfill his end of the deal, struggling with a groin injury in 2019 and opting out in 2020. But he is determined to make amends in 2021 and is entering the season with “a little added chip” on his shoulder.

“When I get back on the field, I definitely want to make sure they respect the name again,” Mosley told reporters earlier this week.

Mosley came to the Jets with a glowing resume that included four Pro Bowl nods and four Second-Team All-Pro selections. But his time in New York immediately got off to a bad start, as he injured his groin in the first game of the 2019 season. He returned several weeks later, only to get injured again, and ended up having surgery. Concerns about COVID-19 then prompted him to skip the entire 2020 season.

But despite the lengthy break, which Mosley refers to as “a two-year hiatus”, he believes he can still be an impactful player when he steps on the field.

“Yeah, I don’t have any doubts in myself. I’m here, so we’ll let the play do the talking,” Mosley explained while adding that the injury is now behind him and that he’s feeling “great”.

Before arriving in New York, C.J. Mosley spent five years with the Baltimore Ravens. While in Baltimore, he developed into an all-around contributor and was considered being one of the best ILBs in the league.

Mosley has 588 career tackles to go with 8.5 sacks, 32 QB hits, 10 interceptions, 37 pass deflections, six forced fumbles, and two defensive touchdowns.

Sam Darnold doesn’t seem to be a franchise quarterback in the eyes of the New York Jets. In a chat with reporters on Wednesday, Jets general manager Joe Douglas admitted that the team is willing to listen to offers for their No. 3 pick in 2018.

Douglas said that he still believes that Darnold has a future in the league but would take a call if a team is interested in him.

“As it pertains to Sam, we think Sam is a dynamic player in this league with unbelievable talent,” said Douglas. “He really has a chance to hit his outstanding potential moving forward. [But] if calls are made, I will answer them.”

Douglas being uncommitted to Darnold results from multiple options that the Jets have to address the position this offseason.

They own the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft, which they can use to take another young signal-caller like BYU’s Zach Wilson or Ohio State’s Justin Fields. Another way to go is to package the pick with other assets to pursue a proven quarterback like disgruntled Houston Texans star Deshaun Watson.

There’s also a scenario where the Jets keep Sam Darnold and give him another year to prove himself, but this seems highly unlikely.

In his three years as a starter, Darnold failed to show that he can be a long-term solution for the Jets at the position. He compiled a 13-25 record while completing just 59.8 percent of his passes for 8,097 yards. The 23-year-old player also has 39 picks compared to 45 touchdowns.

In a move that surprised absolutely nobody, the New York Jets decided to fire their head coach Adam Gase.

Gase leaves the franchise after overseeing consecutive losing seasons and posting a 9-23 record as the Jets’ head coach.

The team confirmed the news on social media on Sunday, making the move official shortly after the Jets suffered a 28-14 loss to the New England Patriots in their final game of 2020.

Gase was considered to be on the hot seat last season as well, but the promising finish of 2019, which saw the team win six out of their final eight games, made the franchise believe they could be on the right track.

However, this turned out to be an anomaly, as the Jets opened 2020 with 13 straight losses, setting the record for the longest winless streak in franchise history. Gase also failed to live up to his reputation as an offensive genius, considering that the Jets were the worst-ranked offense in the league for the second year in a row.

Gase’s time with the Jets was also marked by his bad relationship with some of the team’s high-profile players, including safety Jamal Adams and running back Le’Veon Bell, both of whom left the franchise on bad terms. He also reportedly played a big part in the firing of general manager Mike Maccagn.

Reportedly, the Jets’ search for a new head coach will be headlined by CEO Christopher Johnson, general manager Joe Douglas, and team president Hymie Elhai. Douglas is expected to make the suggestion, but Johnson will have the final say.

New York Jets standout defensive tackle Quinnen Williams is forced to finish his breakthrough NFL season earlier than he wanted to. Williams was placed on the injured reserve due to a neck injury and possible concussion, with the team confirming the move on Wednesday.

Williams got hurt in the Jets’ upset win over the LA Rams on Sunday, being forced to leave the game in the third quarter.

The absence of Williams will be a big issue for the Jets in Week 16 against the Cleveland Browns. The 23-year-old player was one of the rare bright spots for the struggling Jets’ defense in 2020, leading the team with 7 sacks while adding 55 tackles, 14 QB hits, and two forced fumbles.

Jets drafted Quinnen Williams with the third overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft with hopes that he could solve their D-line issues. It didn’t look like a smart choice after Williams’ rookie season, as the Alabama product struggled to make an impact and be disruptive. He finished his pro season with just 2.5 sacks and 28 tackles.

This year, however, Williams looks more comfortable in his role, and it showed on the field. He made some big plays for the Jets while establishing himself as one of the best young linemen in rush defense.

“Last year, I felt like there would be a couple of games in a row where you didn’t really feel him,” said Jets’ head coach Adam Gase. “But this year, I felt like the high majority of the game you felt him. If you were on the other team, you felt him whether you were playing quarterback or in the running game.”
