ATP world number one Novak Djokovic crashed out of the United Cup following a 6-4 6-4 loss to local Australian talent Alex de Minaur on Wednesday. This marks the first time since 2018 that Djokovic has been defeated on Australian soil.

Heading to a 44th straight victory in Australia while preparing to pursue an 11th Australian Open title, Djokovic entered the match against De Minaur with a lingering wrist injury. The Australian was able to break Djokovic’s serve in the first set before repeating the feat in the second, going 4-3 up as a result. While the number one-ranked men’s singles player was able to defend three match points, the underdog was able to persevere and secure the win.

“It’s extremely special,” ATP world number 12 De Minaur exclaimed after his victory. “Novak’s an unbelievable competitor, and what he’s done for the sport is pretty special. It feels surreal, it feels amazing and I’m happy to do it here in Perth and in Australia.” This is the Australian’s first victory over a world number one in his career. This victory sees Team Australia secure a 2-0 victory over Serbia, with teammate Ajla Tomljanović defeating Natalija Stevanović in the women’s matchup.

Novak Djokovic is back at the US Open after missing last year’s tournament. The former ATP world number one marked his return to the final grand slam of the year with a 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 Alexandre Muller of France on Monday night.

“Well, I knew it was going to be a late night for me, late start of the match,” Djokovic explained after the win, acknowledging that he had to wait for the conclusion of Coco Gauff’s win over Laura Siegemund before he could take to the court. “Nevertheless, I mean, I was excited to go out on the court. I didn’t care if I started after midnight because I was looking forward to this moment for a few years, to be out on the biggest stadium in our sport, the loudest stadium in our sport, playing the night session.”

Currently the 2nd seed behind reigning Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz, Djokovic is set to return to the summit of the ATP world rankings following Monday’s win. While the 20-year-old Alcaraz is the reigning US Open champion, Djokovic has won the US Open on three separate occasions, most recently in 2018.

Carlos Alcaraz has advanced to the final of the Western & Southern Open after defeating Hubert Hurkacz 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 during his semifinal clash. He will face Novak Djokovic in Sunday’s final in what will be the rematch of this year’s Wimbledon final, in which Alcaraz emerged victorious.

Djokovic defeated Alexander Zverev, who won the tournament in 2021, 7-6 (5), 7-5. Alcaraz, on the other hand, becomes the youngest player to reach the finals of the Cincinnati ATP tournament since 19-year-old Pete Sampras in 1991. While each of the Spaniard’s four matches in Cincinnati went to three sets, he remains sure of his ability to go the distance during Sunday’s showdown.

“It doesn’t matter if I’m playing third sets or long matches, I’m recovering really well,” the 20-year-old commented ahead of the final. “I feel like I’m going to play the first match of the tournament. I feel great.”

The top favorites at the 2023 Wimbledon, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, didn’t have too much problem in dealing with their opponents on Monday.

Djokovic got a 7-6(6), 7-6(6), 5-7, 6-4 win over Hubert Hurkacz, while Alcaraz won-6 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in his match against Matteo Berrettini. The defending Wimbledon champion and the world’s No. 1 tennis player are through to the quarterfinals and are currently on track to meet in the finals of the tournament.

As always, Djokovic showed that he’s best when the pressure is at its highest. Although not dominating Hurkacz as many believed he will, the Serbian relied on his experience to get the first two close sets. After slipping in the third, he went out and did just enough in the fourth to advance to the next stage.

Djokovic now has 32 consecutive matches at Wimbledon and is hoping to get a record-extending 24 Grand Slams.

Alcaraz dropped the first set, leading many to believe that the Spaniard will have to wait for a bit longer to reach his first quarterfinals at Wimbledon. However, Alcaraz bounced back to claim three straight sets and keep his dream of winning his first Wimbledon title alive.

Roland Garros number one seed Carlos Alcaraz is set to face two-time former champion Novak Djokovic in what is a highly-anticipated semifinal clash on Friday.

Djokovic faced a stern quarterfinal test in the form of 11th seed Karen Khachanov, whom he came from behind to defeat 4-6, 7-6 (0), 6-2, 6-4. The former ATP world number one admitted that he felt “quite sluggish, quite slow” for nearly two sets, even calling the match his worst period throughout the entire tournament. Djokovic had not dropped a set during his first four matches of the tournament.

Alcaraz faced off with fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, whom he dispatched of in a surprisingly one-sided 6-2, 6-1, 7-6 (5) win. “Since the draw came out, everyone was expecting that match—the semifinal against Novak. Myself, as well. I really want to play that match,” Alcaraz commented. The 20-year-old Spaniard will look to win his second Grand Slam title, having won the 2022 US Open.

Nick Kyrgios made a praise-worthy effort, but not even the talented 27-year-old player managed to unseat Novak Djokovic from his Wimbledon throne. Djokovic returned from one set deficit in the finals match of the 2022 tournament to beat Kyrgios in four sets and claim his seventh Wimbledon title and 21st career Grand Slam.

Djokovic had a habit of starting matches slowly during this year’s Wimbledon run, and it was more of the same against first-time Grand Slam finalist Kyrgios. The Australian took the first set by staying strong on his serve and taking advantage of the one break chance Djokovic gave him. However, it turned out that this wasn’t a foreshadowing of a big upset.

Instead, Djokovic, as he always does, tighten up his game and rose to the occasion. At the biggest moment of the match, he would routinely show bigger mental strength than Kyrgios. This included saving three break points while serving for the second set and breaking Kyrgios in the third set at 4-4.

The fourth set was the biggest nail-biter, heading to a tie-break, but at that point, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Djokovic would take it all. He raced to a 6-1 lead and then patiently weathered Kyrgios’ comeback attempt to take it all.

By beating Kyrgios, Djokovic extended his unbeaten run at Wimbledon to 28 matches. He has won the past four tournaments, and his seven Wimbledon titles trail only Roger Federer, who has eight.

“I’ve said it many times, this tournament is extra special for me because it has been the first tournament I ever watched as a kid that got me to start playing tennis,” said Djokovic. “The more you win, it’s logical the more confident, the more comfortable you feel next time you step out on the court. So the run keeps going and I feel very connected with this court and this tournament, without a doubt.”

The reigning French Open champion Novak Djokovic has ended his run at the 2022 Roland Garros. Djokovic lost to Rafael Nadal in a thrilling quarter-finals match that lasted more than four hours.

Nadal had a fierce opening of the match, massively outplaying Djokovic in the first set and winning 6-2. The Serbian bounced back in the second, finding his rhythm and winning the set 6-4.

The third set also saw a one-sided affair, with Nadal returning to the top with a 6-2 display. The fourth, however, was a much closer contest. It was determined in the tiebreak, where Djokovic found himself on the losing end despite managing to save three match points.

Speaking after the match, Nadal downplayed his win and said that it’s only a step towards his final goal, which is adding another Roland Garros trophy to his resume.

“It has been a very emotional night for me. I’m still playing for nights like today,” Nadal said. “But it’s just a quarter-final match, no? So I didn’t win anything. So I just [need to] give myself a chance to be back on the court in two days, play another semifinals here in Roland Garros. [It] means a lot to me.”

Nadal will now continue to chase his 14th French Open title, which would help him extend his record Grand Slam haul to 22. He faces Alexander Zverev in the next round.

After receiving a medical exemption for gaining entry to the Australian Open grand slam regardless of his COVID-19 vaccination status, Novak Djokovic will be required to provide acceptable proof that validates such medical grounds, the Australian home affairs minister Karen Andrews explained in a statement. This comes after the ATP world number one ATP announced his intention to participate in the tournament on social media.

Initially, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison explained that the decision to permit entry to Djokovic lay with the government of Victoria, the state where the Australian Open will be held. Andrews later elaborated, explaining that when Djokovic initially arrives at the airport, it will be the national government that determines whether he will be granted entry to the country.

“If an arriving individual is not vaccinated, they must provide acceptable proof that they cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons to be able to access the same travel arrangement as fully vaccinated travelers,” Andrews confirmed.

With supporters and critics commenting on Djokovic’s situation, Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley came out in defense of the reigning Australian Open champion, explaining that Djokovic underwent the full legitimate process for a vaccine exemption.
