Novak Djokovic won’t be part of this year’s draw at Indian Wells. Djokovic, who was previously expected to make a run for his sixth title at the BNP Paribas Open in 2021, decided to withdraw from the tournament.

The news was officially confirmed by Indian Wells on Wednesday.

“We are disappointed that Novak will not be able to join us at the BNP Paribas Open this fall,” tournament director Tommy Haas said in a statement.

Djokovic later made the announcement of his own on Twitter, calling Indian Wells his “favorite place to go” and adding that he hopes he’ll return to the tournament in 2022.

The 2021 Indian Wells is scheduled between October 4th and October 17th after being moved from its usual March starting date. Austrian Dominic Thiem is the reigning champion, having won the tournament in 2019. The 2020 edition was canceled due to a coronavirus pandemic.

Novak Djokovic is yet to play in the official tennis match since losing to Daniil Medvedev in the 2021 US Open Finals. The loss prevented Djokovic from achieving Calendar-year Grand Slam, considering he previously won the three other major tournaments in 2021: the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. He also remains in a three-way tie with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for most career Grand Slams with 20.

Daniil Medvedev defeated Novak Djokovic in the 2021 US Open finals to capture his first career Grand Slam. Medvedev got the win in a surprisingly dominant fashion, needing only three sets (6-4, 6-4, 6-4) to outlast the world’s No. 1 male tennis player.

Djokovic entered the match with a historic achievement on the line. If he were to win, the 34-year-old Serbian would become the first man since 1969 and Rod Laver to complete calendar Grand Slam, having previously won the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. He would also capture record 21st career Grand Slam, breaking a tie with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

But while Djokovic thrived under pressure many times in his career before, it seems that he broke down under the weight of expectations on Sunday. Uncharacteristic for him, he missed clean shots, made unforced errors, and struggled with Medvedev’s serve even though Russian double-faulted more times than once.

Medvedev’s determination and overall great performance also played a big part in Djokovic’s downfall. The 25-year-old star chased down seemingly lost balls, dominated the baseline, used groundstrokes to perfection, and broke through serving troubles multiple times.

Medvedev also showed mental toughness that allowed him to stick to his game even when it seemed Djokovic was on the verge of a comeback. After racing to a 4-0 lead and then 5-1 lead in the third set, Medvedev saw Djokovic crawling back to 5-4 while denying him a championship point. But he wasn’t about to be denied for the second time, comfortably taking the next game and collapsing to the ground of Arthur Ashe Stadium overwhelmed with excitement.

The world’s number one ranked tennis player Novak Djokovic once again showed his excellence in tough moments. Despite falling down into a 0-2 hole against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the 2021 French Open finals, Djokovic rallied back to defeat the Greek and to claim his second Roland Garros title.

The 6-7 (6), 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 win made Djokovic the first male tennis player in the Open Era to win all four Grand Slams at least twice. He also now has 19 career Grand Slams, putting him just one behind Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, who each have 20.

“I’m very proud, very happy. I don’t want to stop there,” said Djokovic at the press conference. “Hopefully I can keep on [winning] here in Roland Garros, at least one or two more times.”

By winning the French Open and previously the Australian Open, Djokovic now has a chance to win all four Grand Slams in a single year. If he manages to top Wimbledon and the US Open, he will become only the third male player to win the calendar-year Grand Slam.

Novak Djokovic entered the match looking tired and sluggish, while youthful Stefanos Tsitsipas kept his game on point and won the first two sets. Djokovic took a locker room break before the third set, and it was a completely different game after that. His shots started to fall in, he was more composed, and his serve became impeccable.

Tsitsipas, who was playing in his first Grand Slam finals, didn’t know how to adjust to this sudden change of pace. While he scrambled to regain his dominance on the court, Djokovic had already erased the deficit, and it was too late to stop him in the fifth.

“I’d like to thank the Greek fans, and my team, who are constantly behind me, for my dreams. This is a long journey,” said Tsitsipas.

Novak Djokovic’s bid to win his third straight Australian Open is in serious jeopardy despite defeating Taylor Fritz on Friday to advance to the fourth round of the tournament.

Speaking with reporters after the match, Djokovic revealed that he has a muscle tear that might force him to retire from the event.

“I know it’s a tear, definitely, of the muscle. So I don’t know if I’ll manage to recover from that in less than two days,” said Djokovic. “I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know if I’m going to step out onto the court or not.”

Djokovic got a comfortable 7-6, 6-4 lead over Fritz to start the match, and it seemed like he was heading to another easy win. But the contest took an unexpected turn when the reigning Australian Open champ awkwardly slipped while attempting to change directions.

Djokovic had to take a medical timeout and was obviously not at 100 percent once he returned. Fritz used his opportunity and crawled his way back by winning the next two sets with 3-6, 4-6.

Still, when it mattered the most, Djokovic rallied and managed to hold off the 23-year-old American in the fifth.

“I am just very proud of this achievement tonight,” Djokovic added. “Let’s see what happens tomorrow.”

Novak Djokovic is set to play against the No. 14-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic in the fourth round on Sunday. Raonic has faced Djokovic 11 times before and never managed to defeat him.

World’s No.1 tennis player Novak Djokovic is advocating for some major changes in tennis. Speaking with reporters at French Open over the weekend, Djokovic argued that line judges in tennis should be made obsolete in favor of technology.

According to Djokovic, having technology instead of judges would improve the sport.

“The technology is so advanced right now, there is absolutely no reason why you should keep line umpires on the court. That’s my opinion,” said Djokovic, who advanced to fourth-round of 2020 the tournament with an easy 6-0, 6-3, 6-2 win over Daniel Elahi Galán on Saturday. “Of course, I understand technology is expensive, so it’s an economic issue and a question mark. But I feel like we are all moving towards that, and sooner or later there is no reason to keep line umpires.”

The majority of the tournaments rely on technology, known as Hawk-Eye, to make close calls but only if they are challenged by a player. In all other cases, it is the line judge that makes the call. Recently, several events experimented with using Hawk-Eye almost exclusively, but this isn’t expected to become a norm.

On the other side, tournaments that take place on clay, which includes the French Open, don’t use technology at all.

“I really don’t see a reason why every single tournament in this world, in this technologically advanced era, would not have what we had during the Cincinnati/New York tournaments,” Djokovic added.

It isn’t surprising that, out of all people, Novak Djokovic is the one asking to get rid of line judges. During the 2020 US Open, Djokovic slammed the ball in frustration towards the back end of the court and hit one line judge in the throat. This caused him to be defaulted from the tournament and stopped him from winning an easy Grand Slam title with the majority of his rivals missing the event.

Novak Djokovic mainly cruised through Australian Open 2020, he but found himself in trouble when it mattered the most. He was down 2-1 in the final of the tournament against Dominic Thiem, and it looked like the Serbian wouldn’t capitalize on his great run. Still, as many times before, Djokovic gathered his composure and delivered another impressive comeback to capture his eight career and second consecutive Australian Open title.

After winning the first set with ease, Djokovic struggled in the second and third set. His serve wasn’t there and he was visibly tired. Thiem used the opportunity to win both sets and get just one set away from winning his first career Grand Slam.

“I was on the brink of losing the match. Dominic … disrupted my rhythm in my game at one point. He was a better player,” said Djokovic. “Probably one point — and one shot — separated us tonight.”

After the third set, Djokovic took a break and had a consultation with his doctor and trainer. Then he returned to court, and everything changed. The 32-year-old looked revitalized and managed to mount a comeback, which saw him win the fourth set with 6-3 and then have an early break in the fifth to win it 6-4 and close out the match.

“It was anybody’s game, really. I knew that very early in the fifth set, it was crucial for me to make a break,” Djokovic said. “I had that mental edge again, and that was enough to win it.”

Novak Djokovic’s eight Australian Opens are an absolute record in men’s category, with the second most being six won by Roger Federer in Open Era and Roy Emerson in the Amateur Era. Djokovic also climbed to 17 career Grand Slams, with only Federer (20) and Rafael Nadal (19) having more.

Novak Djokovic, currently No. 1 tennis player in the world, continued his cruise at the 2019 French Open with an easy 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win over Jan-Lennard Struff on Monday. This win meant that Djokovic advanced to his 10th consecutive quarterfinals at Roland Garros, something no other tennis player has ever done.

“Everything is coming together beautifully. I’m motivated to fight for the trophy, yes. I mean, that’s why I’m here,” – said Djokovic after the match. “But it’s still a long way to go.”

Djokovic played dominantly at this year’s tournament and is yet to lose a set while giving up four gems on just two occasions. His real test, however, will come on Wednesday when he will face 5th ranked Alexander Zverev for a place in the semi-finals.

“I don’t mind cruising along, to be honest,” – he added. “I have plenty of experience, I think, dealing with situations where you’re facing breakpoints or where it’s tense. I have played plenty of, I think, tight matches in my career, that I can rely on that experience.”

Djokovic got to his first French Open finals in 2012 when he lost to Rafael Nadal in four sets. He was a runner up two more times, losing to Nadal again in 2014 and to Stan Wawrinka in 2015, before finally winning the whole thing in 2016 against Andy Murray.

Other Roland Garros QF matchups include Roger Federer vs. Stan Wawrinka, Rafael Nadal vs. Kei Nishikori, and Dominic Thiem vs. Karen Khachanov.
