Novak Djokovic won’t be part of this year’s draw at Indian Wells. Djokovic, who was previously expected to make a run for his sixth title at the BNP Paribas Open in 2021, decided to withdraw from the tournament.

The news was officially confirmed by Indian Wells on Wednesday.

“We are disappointed that Novak will not be able to join us at the BNP Paribas Open this fall,” tournament director Tommy Haas said in a statement.

Djokovic later made the announcement of his own on Twitter, calling Indian Wells his “favorite place to go” and adding that he hopes he’ll return to the tournament in 2022.

The 2021 Indian Wells is scheduled between October 4th and October 17th after being moved from its usual March starting date. Austrian Dominic Thiem is the reigning champion, having won the tournament in 2019. The 2020 edition was canceled due to a coronavirus pandemic.

Novak Djokovic is yet to play in the official tennis match since losing to Daniil Medvedev in the 2021 US Open Finals. The loss prevented Djokovic from achieving Calendar-year Grand Slam, considering he previously won the three other major tournaments in 2021: the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. He also remains in a three-way tie with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for most career Grand Slams with 20.

The world’s number one ranked tennis player Novak Djokovic once again showed his excellence in tough moments. Despite falling down into a 0-2 hole against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the 2021 French Open finals, Djokovic rallied back to defeat the Greek and to claim his second Roland Garros title.

The 6-7 (6), 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 win made Djokovic the first male tennis player in the Open Era to win all four Grand Slams at least twice. He also now has 19 career Grand Slams, putting him just one behind Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, who each have 20.

“I’m very proud, very happy. I don’t want to stop there,” said Djokovic at the press conference. “Hopefully I can keep on [winning] here in Roland Garros, at least one or two more times.”

By winning the French Open and previously the Australian Open, Djokovic now has a chance to win all four Grand Slams in a single year. If he manages to top Wimbledon and the US Open, he will become only the third male player to win the calendar-year Grand Slam.

Novak Djokovic entered the match looking tired and sluggish, while youthful Stefanos Tsitsipas kept his game on point and won the first two sets. Djokovic took a locker room break before the third set, and it was a completely different game after that. His shots started to fall in, he was more composed, and his serve became impeccable.

Tsitsipas, who was playing in his first Grand Slam finals, didn’t know how to adjust to this sudden change of pace. While he scrambled to regain his dominance on the court, Djokovic had already erased the deficit, and it was too late to stop him in the fifth.

“I’d like to thank the Greek fans, and my team, who are constantly behind me, for my dreams. This is a long journey,” said Tsitsipas.

Novak Djokovic’s bid to win his third straight Australian Open is in serious jeopardy despite defeating Taylor Fritz on Friday to advance to the fourth round of the tournament.

Speaking with reporters after the match, Djokovic revealed that he has a muscle tear that might force him to retire from the event.

“I know it’s a tear, definitely, of the muscle. So I don’t know if I’ll manage to recover from that in less than two days,” said Djokovic. “I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know if I’m going to step out onto the court or not.”

Djokovic got a comfortable 7-6, 6-4 lead over Fritz to start the match, and it seemed like he was heading to another easy win. But the contest took an unexpected turn when the reigning Australian Open champ awkwardly slipped while attempting to change directions.

Djokovic had to take a medical timeout and was obviously not at 100 percent once he returned. Fritz used his opportunity and crawled his way back by winning the next two sets with 3-6, 4-6.

Still, when it mattered the most, Djokovic rallied and managed to hold off the 23-year-old American in the fifth.

“I am just very proud of this achievement tonight,” Djokovic added. “Let’s see what happens tomorrow.”

Novak Djokovic is set to play against the No. 14-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic in the fourth round on Sunday. Raonic has faced Djokovic 11 times before and never managed to defeat him.
