Roger Federer finally got the best of Novak Djokovic. The two tennis greats met in the group stage of ATP Finals tournament on Thursday, with Federer coming out with a 6-4, 6-3 win.

This was the first time since 2015 that Federer managed to beat Djokovic. The Swiss legend lost the previous five matchups against the Serbian, including a heartbreaking defeat in Wimbledon finals this year.

”I played incredible, and I knew I had to, because that’s what Novak does,” – said Federer after the match. ”I was able to produce, it was definitely magical.”

Roger Federer advanced to the semi-finals of the tournament with this win, while Djokovic ended up being eliminated after 1-2 record in the group stage. Federer will get Rafael Nadal or Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semis depending on the results of remaining matches.

With this early exit, Novak Djokovic missed out on the opportunity to take over Rafael Nadal for the No. 1 spot on ATP rankings. Djokovic also had a chance to equal Pete Sampras’ record, who was the top-ranked tennis player in the world six times.

“There was not much that I did right this match, to be honest. Realistically he was better player in all aspects and absolutely deserved to win,” Djokovic said. “He served great, moved well, returned my serve very well. From his end, I think he did everything right.”

The No.1 ranked tennis player in the world, Novak Djokovic, won’t have a chance to defend his US Open title after all. Djokovic retired from the fourth round match against Stan Wawrinka and was effectively eliminated out of the tournament.

Djokovic lost the first two sets with results 6-4 and 7-5 and was trailing 2-1 in the third. At that moment he walked towards the umpire and told him he couldn’t continue the match due to a pain in his left shoulder.

Djokovic’s exit from the court ended up being followed by loud boos from the crowd, who felt they were robbed from watching a hugely interesting matchup.

“I’m sorry for the crowd. Obviously, they came to see a full match and just wasn’t to be,” – said Djokovic said at the post-game conference. “I mean, a lot of people didn’t know what’s happening, so you cannot blame them.”

The shoulder issues Novak Djokovic experienced aren’t new, as he was battling with the same injury during the second-round match. Although it seemed as though things got better in recent days, the injury got the best out of the 32-year-old and robbed him of the chance to defend the title he won in 2018.

Djokovic’s injury also means that we won’t get to see a potential re-match between him and Roger Federer. If both tennis players would have won their respective matches, they were set to meet in the semi-finals.

Now Wawrinka will try to get in Federer’s way, but he will have to beat Daniil Medvedev to get there. Federer, on the other side, faces Grigor Dimitrov in the next round.

Novak Djokovic, currently No. 1 tennis player in the world, continued his cruise at the 2019 French Open with an easy 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win over Jan-Lennard Struff on Monday. This win meant that Djokovic advanced to his 10th consecutive quarterfinals at Roland Garros, something no other tennis player has ever done.

“Everything is coming together beautifully. I’m motivated to fight for the trophy, yes. I mean, that’s why I’m here,” – said Djokovic after the match. “But it’s still a long way to go.”

Djokovic played dominantly at this year’s tournament and is yet to lose a set while giving up four gems on just two occasions. His real test, however, will come on Wednesday when he will face 5th ranked Alexander Zverev for a place in the semi-finals.

“I don’t mind cruising along, to be honest,” – he added. “I have plenty of experience, I think, dealing with situations where you’re facing breakpoints or where it’s tense. I have played plenty of, I think, tight matches in my career, that I can rely on that experience.”

Djokovic got to his first French Open finals in 2012 when he lost to Rafael Nadal in four sets. He was a runner up two more times, losing to Nadal again in 2014 and to Stan Wawrinka in 2015, before finally winning the whole thing in 2016 against Andy Murray.

Other Roland Garros QF matchups include Roger Federer vs. Stan Wawrinka, Rafael Nadal vs. Kei Nishikori, and Dominic Thiem vs. Karen Khachanov.
