The Los Angeles Angels finally decided to make a big investment in the pitching department. According to the Angels’ announcement on Tuesday, the team agreed to a one-year contract with right-hand pitcher Noah Syndergaard.

According to multiple reports, Syndergaard will receive $21 million in 2022. He previously rejected an $18.4 million qualifying offer from the New York Mets.

The move represents a step forward for the Angels after they struggled with getting reliable pitching from their rotation in 2021 past two-way star Shohei Ohtani. But it is also a big gamble, considering that Syndergaard only has two innings to his name since 2019.

Ahead of the 2020 MLB season, Syndergaard was diagnosed with torn ulnar collateral ligament and had to undergo Tommy John surgery. He didn’t return until September this year, when he made two starts for the Mets and pitched an inning apiece in each game. The 29-year-old had 9.00 ERA combined while giving up three hits and striking out two.

It was widely expected that Syndergaard would take the qualifying offer from the Mets and rebuild his value before entering the free agency next year. Still, it turned out that other MLB teams were not scared by his prolonged absence. The Angels reportedly had to beat out the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Yankees in order to secure his signature.

Noah Syndergaard spent his entire MLB career with the Mets. He has a 47–31 record in the majors with a 3.32 career ERA and 777 strikeouts. His best campaign came in 2016, when he compiled a 14-9 record in 30 starts and earned an All-Star nod.

Noah Syndergaard’s return to the MLB has been put on hold, according to New York Mets manager Luis Rojas. In a chat with reporters on Thursday, Rojas confirmed that Syndergaard was shut down due to inflammation in his right elbow and will be out for at least the next six weeks.

While the Mets remain optimistic, Syndergaard could be out for an even longer stretch and is in danger of missing the rest of the year if his elbow doesn’t respond well to therapy.

“This happening is tough… We pray that he can pitch for us this year,” said Rojas.

Syndergaard was diagnosed with a torn UCL in the same elbow in early 2020 and had to undergo a Tommy John surgery. He missed the entire season and was just making his return to pitching in May, with plans to become active again officially in June.

The 28-year-old slinger was featured in two games for the Mets’ Class A affiliate St. Lucie but only managed to go through five innings. He threw 44 pitches in four innings in his first game while exiting the second game after 16 pitched due to soreness in his elbow.

Luckily for Syndergaard, his UCL didn’t suffer any structural damage, so he won’t have to go through another procedure.

Syndergaard is on a one-year, $9.7 million deal this season and is set to become a free agent. He spent his entire MLB career with the Mets and currently has a 47–30 record with a 3.31 ERA and 775 strikeouts.

New York Mets right-hand pitcher Noah Syndergaard agreed to a one-year deal and managed to avoid going through an arbitration process. According to multiple reports, Syndergaard will earn $9.7 million in 2021.

The team announced the news on Tuesday on social media. The deal represents a good move for the Mets, as they are holding on to an important part of their rotation for at least one more year.

Since making his MLB debut for the franchise in 2015, Syndergaard posted a 47-30 record with a 3.31 ERA and 775 strikeouts. He was also an All-Star in 2016.

The 28-year-old veteran, on the other hand, gets the chance for a bounce-back season before entering free agency next year. Syndergaard missed the entire 2020 campaign after undergoing Tommy John surgery in March but is expected to play at some point in the new season.

According to Mets manager Luis Rojas, Syndergaard is recovering well and is “a little bit ahead of schedule” in the rehab process.

“You know how Noah works and goes about it,” Rojas told reporters. “He’s a hard worker, so he’s a guy that was going to face this surgery and rehab the best you could face it. So he’s doing it as we expected.”

Despite locking Syndergaard, the Mets are expected to add more pitching help through free agency. They are reportedly interested in Cy Young Award winner Trevor Bauer and are expected to make a strong push for him in the following weeks.

The New York Mets’ rotation was dealt a blow on Tuesday after learning that key pitcher Noah Syndergaard will miss the 2020 season due to a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

In order to fix the tear, Syndergaard will undergo Tommy John surgery on Thursday, March 26th.

The big righty, who had appeared in three Spring Training games with no visible issues during the warm-up period was cut short due to the coronavirus outbreak, apparently suffered the injury just before camp was put on hold.

Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen stated, “Noah is an incredibly hard worker and a tremendous talent. While this is unfortunate, we have no doubt that Noah will be able to return to full strength and continue to be an integral part of our championship pursuits in the future.”

The Texas native hit a career-high with 32 games started in an up-and-down 2019 season. While looking dominant at times, Syndergaard gave up a number of home runs and finished with a 10-8 record and a 4.28 ERA.

The five-year veteran is the owner of a 47-30 career record with a solid 3.31 ERA since making his debut in 2015.

Syndergaard is expected to make his return to the mound next season.

New York Mets haven’t entered the season the way they hoped and are currently boosting one of the worst records in National League with 46-54. This reportedly got the team thinking about strategy change which includes moving All-Star pitcher Noah Syndergaard.

According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, Mets are “seriously listening” to offers for Syndergaard and might be motivated to make a deal if the right opportunity arises. This is a realistic scenario, as the 26-year-old is under contract through 2021, meaning teams would be willing to put up an attractive package for his services.

The team that reportedly has the most interest in Syndergaard are San Diego Padres, who are looking to get a quality starting pitcher in order to make the next step towards World Series contention.

Padres’ are not secretive about their intentions, as general manager A.J. Preller confirmed team’s focus on finding a good pitcher in a recent chat with Yahoo Sports.

“You always look to see if you can add impact starting pitching, and even if we look up in a year or two and have a ton of home-grown guys that are major league starters, you’re always going to look for another major league starter that could pitch at the front of the rotation,” – said Preller.

Noah Syndergaard isn’t having his best season in 2019, sitting at a 7-5 record with 4.33 ERA and 126 strikeouts. Still, there is no doubt that he remains an exciting player and that he could get back to his All-Star form if he ends up in the right system.

Syndergaard MLB career stats include 44–26 record, 3.20 ERA and 691 strikeouts.
