Ligue 1 side Monaco didn’t need to much time to find a new manager after firing Spaniard Robert Moreno on Saturday. Just a day later, the club confirmed that former Bayern Munich head coach Niko Kovac took over as his replacement, signing a three-year deal.

Moreno spent just six months on Monaco’s bench, overseeing 13 games and posting a 5-3-5 record. The club finished the 2019/20 at No.9 in Ligue 1.

Kovac was fired by Bayern back in November after a series of bad results and problems in the locker room.

“We are very happy to welcome Niko to the club,” said Monaco vice president Oleg Petrov. “This season marks the start of a new chapter for Monaco, with an asserted sporting orientation in line with the club’s objectives.”

Petrov also added that Kovac will have a significant role in shaping the club’s future and will get input in making all major decisions.

Niko Kovac spent his early managerial career with Croatia’s national team, coaching both the youth and senior squad. Between 2016 and 2018, Kovac served as a head coach of Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt, leading the club to DFB-Pokal trophy in 2017/18.

In 2018, Kovac took over German powerhouse Bayern Munich and won the Bundesliga in his first season with the club. However, the club became inconsistent in his second year at the helm, and he left in November 2019 by a mutual agreement.

Bayern Munich won’t be on the market for a new manager after all. The Bundesliga side announced on Friday that interim manager Hansi Flick would take over the club on a permanent basis. Flick signed a contract that will keep him with Bayern through the 2022/23 season.

Flick was named Bayern’s interim manager in November after the German side decided to fire Niko Kovac. In December, following a series of good results, the club extended Flick’s tenure until the end of the season, and it proved to be a great decision.

During his time in charge, the 54-year-old won 18 out of 21 games and propelled Bayern back to the top of Bundesliga. He is also credited for stabilizing the locker room and instilling a healthy work atmosphere, which obviously didn’t go unnoticed by the front office.

“The club is very happy with Hansi Flick’s work,” said club’s chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in a statement. “The team has developed under his leadership, and we’re playing attractive football, which is reflected in the results.”

Since Kovac’s dismissal, Bayern Munich was linked with several high-profile managerial names. Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino and ex-Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri were among the favorites for the job, but the club didn’t want to rush with the decision, which turned out to be a wise strategy.

Bayern Munich found itself in uncharted ground after a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday. After the embarrassing loss, the team was left with no other choice than to part ways with head coach Niko Kovac.

The team announced on Sunday evening that they parted ways with the Croatian coach, who took over at the German club in July of 2018. Kovac was named Jupp Heynckes’ successor in April of the same year after coaching Eintracht Frankfurt.

During his time with Bayern, Kovac won the Bundesliga title as well as the DFB Pokal in the 2018-19 season. Despite bowing out to Liverpool in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League, it was generally considered to be a successful season for the club.

The beginning of this season, however, was a different story for Kovac and Bayern Munich. After the team’s 5-1 loss to Eintracht, Bayern finds itself in fourth place in the Bundesliga with only 5 victories in 10 matches.

They currently find themselves four points behind surprising leaders Borussia Monchengladbach.

Assistant coach Hans Flick is expected to coach Bayern Munich in this week’s Champions League clash against Olympiakos while the team looks for its new manager.
